Empire of Scotland
An Account of the Unification of Britannia from the Diary of Kenneth Dalraida
Dalraidia. A Kingdom in the southwest of Scotland, in the inver-clyde and Ayr regions, based around the city of Ayr.
Pictland. A clanhold in the East of Scotland. The Clans of Pict land regularily raid their neighbours from their homelands around the fife and lothian regions, based out of Entremont their armies raid the Dalraidians, Grampians, and Northumbrians periodically.
Grampian. A Clanhold based in the north of Scotland, around the Highland and Grampian regions. Less warlike than their Pict brethern, their capital at Elgin they regularily trade with the Kingdom of Dalraidia, and have friendly relations with them.
Northumbria. A Kingdom based around the city of Newcastle in northern England, within the regions of Dumfries, and Northumberland. They extremely dislike their northern cousins, and they like their southern brothers even less.
York. A Kingdom based in Yorkshire, south of Northumbria. Algined with the Angles in the south and often warring with their Northern nieghbour,Northumbria, and their western nieghbour, Wessex. Their capital is York.
Wessex. A Kingdom in the west of England, lying between the Welsh Kingdoms of Brecon and Caernarfon, and York in the east. They are peaceful and try to maintain peaceful relations with everyone, but find it difficult with their warlike Yorkish nieghbours.
Caernarfon. A Kingdom in covering the northern part of Wales. Its capital at Caernarfon, on the Irish Sea coast, they rule everything from that sea to the border with Wessex, in Shropshire.
Brecon. With their capital at Cardiff, this Welsh Kingdom is the more powerful of the two Welsh nations, they rule over the entire southern half of Wales, and hold an alliance with their southern neighbours the Angles.
Angleland. A confederation of Lordships. The Angle Nations is highly warlike and feudal. More often than not they war within themselves. They do tend to keep good relations with their northern neighbours in spite of their warlike tendancies. Their capital is at Windsor, and their territory covers then entire south of Britannia.
King Duncan Dalraida, ruler of Dalraidia, a Kingdom which was named for his family, those who founded it, was a peace loving and honourable man. He ruled well, and for a long time. Though throughout his rule the Picts raided and attacked his people and shortly after his eldest sons 17th birthday he decided enough was enough. There would be no more treaties for the Picts to violate. No promises to be broken. He decided to end Pictish raids and declared war on the Picts.
He and his son, Prince Royal Kenneth Dalraida, led the Dalraidian army into Pictland. And within a few short months they had reached the gates of Entremont, capital of Pictland, largely due to the frequent infighting of the Picts.
When they entered Entremont a mob of unruly citizens attacked the troops, and King Duncan was killed. In a rage and tore by grief, Prince Kenneth ordered the city burned to the ground and its citizens executed.
Swiftly following the death of his father and the Razing of Entremont, did Kenneth Dalraida crown himself King of both the Dalraidians and the Picts. Seeing the example of their capital, the Picts fell into line.
Fearing that war would come to their lands, the Clan Council of Grampian met with the King of Dalraidia and Pictland, to discuss a binding peace treaty and secure his promise never to attack them.
King Kenneth assured the Clan leadership that Dalraidia only attacked the Picts in self defense, and would not be attempting to conquer Grampian. He swore an oath before the gods that this was true.
So impressed was the Clan council with King Kenneth Dalraidia, they decided that they would each swear loyalty to his crown, and bring Grampian into his Empire.
It was then that Kenneth Dalraidas Empire began to be referred to as Scotland, for it was a union of the 3 nations of Scotland under his crown.
Northumbria watching the unification of Scotland under this Dalraida child, perceived a threat that was not there and began to attack Scot territories.
They called upon their southern brothers in York and Angleland to do the same.
They believed they would defeat the barbarian Scots quickly and easily. They were wrong.
Scot armies swept southwards, and swarmed over the Capital of Newcastle, like wave of locusts. Swallowing everything in their path.
Soon the King of Northumbria lay dead at the feet of King Kenneth Dalraida. And then he took they throne of Northumbria.
York and Angleland watching in horror at how easily the Northumbrians fell to the barbarian northerners, declare war upon the Scot Empire.
Again King Dalraida rallies his troops and marches southwards against York.
Many battles are fought across Yorkish territory, and day by day the Scots gain lands, seeping south like water through a seive, permeating every aspect of life in the areas they conquer.
York and Angleland plea to Wessex to assist them, to attempt to defeat these pleas, King Kenneth Dalraida marched an army to Wessex, capital of the Kingdom of Wessex, where he met with the King of that nation. King Dalraida demanded Wessex surrender or he would destroy them. King Wessex agreed to hand rulership of Wessex over to the Empire as long as his people were not harmed and he would be allowed to continue to be Lord over that region of the Empire. Kenneth Dalraida allowed this and was able to concentrate his troops south against the Yorks, who fell shortly after the surrender of Wessex, and the Angles who faded away at any sign of the Scot army.
Soon the Scots had occupied all of Angleland, and much of their army was unaccounted for. It was discovered that the army of the Angles had retreated into their allies, the Brecon, territory. Together the Brecon and Angles would be able to defeat the Scot army easily in the mountains of Wales.
Knowing this the King of Scotland visited the Kingdom of Caernarfon, and reached an agreement with their leader. A treaty which brought the Caernarfon into the Empire as members, and gave the Scot army troops experience enough in mountain warfare to allow the Scots to defeat the Brecon and Angle resisters.
Caernarfon agreed to enter the Empire because of their hatred of the Brecon, in an attempt to gain the favour of who they view as the inevitable ruler of all Britannia, over the Brecon, who the leader of Britannia would scorn because of their resistance.
Using the expertise of the Caernarfon, the Scot army swept into Brecon lands, and after many years of mountain fighting the armies of the Angles and the Brecon surrendered to the Empire.
After being trapped in high ground away from regular supplies, and their familes and loved ones being within Scot territory had taken its toll on their morale and they were indeed eager to end the war. Even at the price of surrender.
And so Britannia was unified. But King Kenneth Dalraidas work was not done.
The Irish Nations of Belfast, Dublin and Cork had for many years during the Wars of Unification, been raiding the Imperial coast, and attacking Scot shipping.
The King had had enough. He like his father before him move to end the raids by an agressive neighbour once and for all.
