The Barbaryians had conquered the desert raiders and restored their ailing economy. Now that the raider threat was gone, they could focus more on building the Coast up to the standards that would make it an intellectual powerhouse.

History of Fennia, part III

The times of NESTORI THE DEFENDER (around 3130-3080 B.C.) and the end of the first Brahe dynasty.

The next important turn in the history of Finno-Ugrian people came in around 3100 B.C. The stone-aged Fennian tribes had a big influence all around the eastern part of the Baltic Sea, and many tribes were joining in to be a part of the religious culture which was beginning to shine. The polytheism in which the Fennians believed in was getting new forms; it has to be remembered that the country was run by priests (except of course for the Chairman of the Council of Priests, who had always been a member of the Brahe family) and the priests could basically shape the polytheistic religion the way they wanted.

For some time, there had been rumours of Scandinavian people putting up some resistance in the north against Fennian expansion. The leader of Fennia in around 3100 B.C. was Chairman Nestori Brahe the Defender, who, according to a legend, became the Chariman after Ukko Ylijumala, the highest god in the Fennian religion, had landed on the face of the Earth and pointed him out to be the next leader of the nation instead of his older brother (who was then executed).

And (according to the same local legend) it was Nestori the Defender who finaly made contact with the Vikings in the north - and immediately ended up in a war with them, being the crappy diplomat that he was.

Nestori was, however, an excellent military tactician. He decided to join the battle against the Vikings personally and ended up defending the empire quite succesfully. Some Viking attacks were unstoppable, though, but one has to remember that the Vikings had a lot more developed weapons. Their weapons were made out of copper while Fennians fought with stone axes.

It was during those times when the stone age ended in Fennia. Nowdays most historians believe that the Fennians stole the copper technology from the vikings. Some even suggest that it was Nestori himself who led the battle in which several copper weapons were stolen and later brought to St. Brahesburg where local blacksmiths learned how to produce similiar, more efficient attack weapons.

Fighting against the Vikings is what Nestori Brahe "the Defender" is best known of, but legend says that he was also the man who decided to start a great monument, "the Grave of Gods", to celebrate gods and to have a mausoleum the Chosen ones, so they can be close to gods (all Fennian chairman would of course be among these "chosen ones").

Nestori never got to see his dreams of destroying the vikings and building that great mausoleum come true. When Nestori died in around 3080 B.C., the vikings were still a threat in the north and the wonder of which he dreamed had just been started and would not be finished for a long time. It is not known how Nestori died, but several local legends suggest that his best friend killed him during a fishing trip outside of Tallinn.

Nestori was the last member of the first Brahe dynasty, as he did not have relatives who could have taken the crown of the Chairman. But his best friend, Iikka Brahe, took the name "Brahe" despite the fact that he had not been related to the Brahe family and got himself selected as the new Chariman. This started the second Brahe dynasty, which would last for thousands of years.

--- World Events ---

Roman troops lead the advance into Sicily where they meet with staunch resistance to Roman rule. The Sicilians, though lacking copper, are definitely putting up a fight. Meanwhile in the northern part of Rome, being totally undefended the Celts of Central Europe attack the borders and capture some land before being stopped by a militia under General Augustus.

Japanese scholars finally are able to craft copper metal, long overdue. Also, expeditions to Hokkaido meet with a friendly indigenous tribe known as the Kitami. They wish for peace, and realize both the Japanese and Kitami can share Hokkaido.

The Iroquois expand peacefully throughout the Great Lakes region, acquiring now five nations within its confederacy. However, there is one tribe that resists. The Mohawk have declared war on the Iroquois and are putting up a nuisance on the eastern border.

Burgundian occupation of Rhineland continues, and so does the casualties. Nearly half of the occupation force was killed in various attacks by militia forces, and outside German forces. Meanwhile, a landing in Corsica ensures Burgundian supremacy in it’s southern seas.

Fennian raids into Vikingland result in the capture of many Viking settlements and the expansion of Fennia. However, acres upon acres of farmland – vital farmland – were destroyed in these raids, leaving some villages to be starved.

Mississippi runs into two major powers on her sides, the Seminoles of Florida and the Acoma of Texas. Both these tribes wish to remain peaceful with the Mississippians, but cannot ensure the actions of their warriors should the Mississippians expand into rightful Seminole/Acoma territory.

The tribes north of Ashanti have, instead of uniting with Ashanti, taken the idea into their own hands and have united themselves to form Nigeria. They have immediately began to check the expansion of the Ashanti, and have dispatched scouts to mark every Ashanti move.

Tribal Council, Tripoli, September 23, 2997 BC.

Chief Ali Pasha IV, stood up to adress the chiefs of the various cities and villages throughout the Barbary Coast:

"Gentlemen, we are gathered here today to discuss the future of our nation. It has been rumored that some of the greatest smiths in the land have the ability to fuse metals in to a powerful metal that can pierce armor and slash through men like an earthquake rips open the earth. Th-"

"Well obviously we should try and research this new substance," interrupted Hamisha Kalifa, then rambunctious governor of the city of Carthage.

"DO NOT INTERRUPT ME OR I WILL HAVE YOU OUT OF THIS ROOM GOVERNOR!" roared the High Chief, "you shall not speak until I am finished speaking."

The men sat silently, none of them making a peep. "Well then," the high cheif continued, returning to his calm self, "the problem is that we have a lot of new civilizations expanding towards us, and if we don't expand our army they could outnumber us, and things could be worse if we fail to research this new metal."

The head of the Barbary Tribal Army said, "We should go forward with this, as even if we don't research the metal, there is no way we can be attacked for now."

The other chieftains murmured a consensus.

"The it is settled, we will improve the schooling of our nation so more young men can be set to the task of smithing."

Again, the leaders murmured a consensus, and so an era of greatness for the Barbary Coast was to begin...
