Siam
"The city is so large that if you start from when the sun first arises in the heavens, you would not find yourself at the Eastern gate until it is swallowed back up by the earth... the streets are so wide two carts pulled by oxen could go their different ways without leaving a mark on the other, and are so clean that one could eat his morning meal off of them. Entire streets are lined with shops selling objects fashioned from the new metal that had been discovred. Names such as "iron-wielder" and "swordkeeper" are becoming more and more common. On saturdays, the people flock to the temples to pray in the name of Min. In the middle of this all, the half-finished military academy reaches upward towards the heavens, hinting at the marvel it will bestow upon all who see it once it is fully completed"
- Kyu Soon, Korean traveling writer describing Bangkok
Indeed, Bangkok and Siam had changed much in the one hundred years that would be known as the "Birth of the new Siam". Indeed, so significant were these times that the Siamese calendar would start the day that King Mongkut took power, sometime around 2100 B.C. In the year 2 o.s.e. (Old Siamese Era), the Min dynasty died away with it's last heir passing away due to a strange disease he contracted while hunting in the lush jungles. Within two years, control of the empire went to a young mercheant by the name of Mongkut, who became the first of the Mongkut line. Mongkut I was the owner of one of the cities largest businesses, and was renowned for his fairness and good nature. Not only would people from all across Siam come to him for merchandise, but also for advice and counsil. It was no surprise to anyone involved in Siam's politics, when Mongkut became the ruler of Siam. His first action was to abolish the system held by Siam up until that time:
"Oh ye who are with me, Mongkut, ruler of Siam and all of it's people. We have suffered from the confinement of our ancient tribal squabbles for years now, and I be the one to put an end to it. Oh ye who believe in me and the future of the common people, know that all power belongs to me, Mongkut, king of the Siamese"
And with those famous words started the first despotism the world had ever seen. The organization of the empire increased dramatically, and all enjoyed this new system. Siam prospeured and nobody dared question Mongkut's policies. Such power Mongkut held over the people that he was able to destroy the old religion of Minionism!
"Religions are to represent culture, science, artistry, and peace and balance among the mortal realm. Yet these foolish old monks promote warfare and bloodshed, even participating in it! This shall not be tolerated! Minionism is to be abolished along with it's Minionmonks"
In it's place stood the new religion, which came to be known as revival Minionism.
Basic Principles of Revival Minionism
- There is only one god, Min, the judge, who has no shape or earthly form
- Those who die will either go to the underworld, or to heaven, as chosen by this god
- All persons are born into life equal in the eyes of god
- Persons role in life is to contribute to the world best he can
- Person must commit acts of good, never acts of evil
- Unnecessary violence is prohibited, as are drugs and gambling
- One must establish peace with himself before he can find peace in heaven
- It is unethical to persist about Minionism onto one of another belief
- Siam is the chosen nation of Min, and he is the protector of it's people
These were the laws as written down by a new caste of monks, created by Mongkut. They were spread throughout the empire, and throughout Bangkok, and given to the people to interpet and to follow. The temples were cleared of all ancient idols and such, and replace by these doctorines, which the Minion monks taught to the people, along with reading and writing and other such basic principles. The literacy of Siam slowly increased, as did the number of temples and overall education. Most significant was the increase among the mercheant class, which was quickly becoming a trademark of Siam.
This was to be excpected of course. The merchants had plenty of business ever since the discovery of iron. In fact, King Mongkut specifically ordered that every man in the army replace his copper weapons with iron ones. Now every man held a long iron spear and shield along with his normal military clothing. But most impressive of all were the new "Siamese Knights", powerful horseback warriors who yielded iron weapons, and swiftly rode into battle to use them. They were, as inspectors described,
"The epitome of the Siamese military state and organization. Disciplined and organized to legendary levels, with the best equipment the world had ever seen. As god is my witness, we posses the best soldiers the world has ever seen!"
And this was hard to argue with. With the appearance of neighboring countries, a powerful military was needed more than ever. The Siamese military academy was continued into the n.s.e. (New Siamese Era), and craftsman spent their whole life working on it's completion. Most troublesome was the state of Rangoon, a country which had more men in it's ranks than Siam itself. Something had to be done about this, and Mongkut finally decided to preoccupy them with a non-agression pact. With that flank out of the way, the Siamese would turn to the smallest of the new nations... Mekong.
Although tiny, the Mekong had 320 men with bronze age weaponry. With the Siamese iron technology, these numbers counted for drastically less than they normally would've. They were weak, with a weak tribal goverment, and a loose form of pagan worshiping present throughout these tribes. In short, the Mekong posessed no significant culture whatsoever and were but a loosely united tribal confederation standing between Siam, and the glory promised to it by Minionism.
