The Story of the Vikings and how they shaped Sweden
By Alronic, chronicler

Among the various tribes that inhabited the land the natives called Sweden, a leader took control of a tribe of peoples called Vikings, with long hair, big beards and even bigger axes. Now this leader was not the biggest man around nor the best warrior around. How did he arise to the throne of the Vikings in the land Sweden? Two words, luck and smarts. Knowing he wasnt a fast or as strong as his other tribepeoples he used smarts to unwit people and trick them into doing his bidding. From this he got the title of lucky.

But this dosnt explain how exactly he rose to the top. Far back in our history the land of Sweden was not united under the Vikings, they were the most powerful tribe in the land and they knew and all the other tribes paid them tribute, but remain seperate with their own petty Kings and Chiefs. Leif came to the Chiefship after seven long years of infighting between the eligible members of the tribe. He outlasted them all and the fruits of victory was his. On his head now rested the Crown of Thor.

He was still a young man at this point and as such was full of energy and worked with the tribe to make it more productive in producing food.

But Leif was also driven by something else, a united Sweden, with the Vikings as rulers of course but a place where all the men in Sweden could call homef forever.

There were still many obstacles, you only had to cross a river, go through a forrest and some hills and you were in a different tribes land. To Leif this would not do, but unlike most prevoius Chiefs instead of launching an attack he stopped and thought about a new plan to get the closet neighbouring tribe to join the Vikings.

The tribe in question was called the Sabines, and their Chieftess had given birth to a young daughter many moons ago, she was only a few years older than Leif but still young. But more importantly she was the heir to the tribe. The Chiefs son had been killed in a hunting accident almost year ago. (authors note* some suspecut Leif had a part in the "adidicent") Leif knew this was now or never.

Olaf Beergut, Leifs most trusted advisor went to the Sabines with a proposal of marriage between the daughter of the other chief and his own Chief. The other Chief accepted and Leif married his bride, Sventla.

Many years passed, and Leif ruled well and inherited the neighbouring tribe and it asslimated into the Vikings in short order. Leif had taken the first step into Swedish unity and this mission drove him to his dying day.

Introduction to the Scythians-by Anonymous Visitor to the Scythian lands, 3007 B.C.

The Scythian soldier scrapes the scalp clean of flesh and softening it by rubbing between the hands, uses it thenceforth as a napkin. The Scyth is proud of these scalps and hangs them from his bridle rein; the greater the number of such napkins that a man can show, the more highly is he esteemed among them. Many make themselves cloaks by sewing a quantity of these scalps together.....Such as the Scythian customs with respect to scalps."

-Parapatua of Tovsta, The Ways of a Scythian Soldier

Who are the Scythians and where did they come from? Legend has it that they sprang from the three sons of certain Targitaus, a person of supernatural birth who dwelled in the Black Sea domain. Together the three brothers ruled the land until four golden implements - a plow, a yoke, a battle-ax and a drinking cup - fell from the sky and suddenly began to blaze. Colaxais, the youngest, proved to be the only one of the brothers who could pick up the burning objects, and thus became sole ruler of the Scythian people.

The Scythians are a people from the Black Sea Area. They originally lived in small numbers at the banks of the Araks River. Slowly they expanded to where they are today, living in the lowland between the Ocean and the Meot Lake, and from the Cacasus Mountians up to the Tanais River.

One thing that makes the Scythians unique from other tribes in the area, such as the Sarmatians, Thracians, and Urartu, is their bloody tribal customs and society. Warriors not only cut off the heads of slain enemies but also make leather-bound drinking cups from their enemies' skulls. They line these grisly trophies with gold and proudly displayed them to impress their guests. The Scythians are a traditionally polygamous and male-dominated society. A wealthy Scythian can take several wives, and upon his death a son or a brother will assume them as his own. Scythian women have little power beyond the confines of their households, unlike their neighboring tribe, the Sarmatians, whose women not only ride but fight with the men equally. Instead, Scythian women stay at home or in wagons and tend to their young.

Since fish and game are abundant the tribesmen are never short of food. Their staple diet consists of kumis, a form of fermented mare's milk, a good deal of cheese, and vegetables such as onions, garlic and beans. They cook their meat as a stew. What few visitors that make it out of Scythia alive say that the women do not use water for cleaning, but use paste of pounded cypress, cedar and frankincense that, according to Herodotus, they applied to the face and body. "A sweet odor is thereby imparted to them, and when they take off the plaster on the day following, their skin is clean and glossy." says one visitor to the Scythian village of Solokha.

However, for all of what seems to be barbaric and unnatural customs, the Scythians are a very passionate people - bearded men with dark, deep set eyes with long, wind-snarled hair. They do not wear the tunics of normal tribes, but instead wear trousers, an invention that makes in easier to ride a horse, something the Scythians do alot of. Also, they produce art of stunning force and vitality. They have many animal ornaments and motifs, and it appears that their favorite animals are the stag, ibex, horse, boar, bear, wolf, eagle, felines, fish, and eagles, as many visitors report seeing these carvings in Scythian marketplaces.

Scythians hve no temples, or altars or religious images, and evidently no priests. It is known that the the Scythians practice Shamanism in their religion: they use shamans to deal with the world of spirits and gave advice to the kings and chiefs. Being superstitious people, they believe in witchcraft, magic and the power of amulets. The most highly honored of the Scythian shamans come from certain specific families. They are effeminate males called 'enarees' - meant 'men-women' or 'halfmen'. They speak with high-pitched voices and wear women's clothes.

This is all I have found out about the Scythians, for they are a very mysterious people, like no other. I promise to future generations that Scythian culture will have an impact on much of the world around it.

Land of the Nile

colordrawingmerenptah.gif

The Pharaoh Menes sat in his majestic throne room in the Merenptah palace. He was the first pharaoh of his line, and he sat alone in it. Normally there would be dozens of servants, scribes, entertainers, slave girls, and nobles all around him in a frenzy of activity. But the pharaoh had ordered that the court be empty and his subjects leave him in peace for one day. He was tired... exhausted even, from the many days of celebrating.

For a week now, the streets of Memphis were constantly full of parades and the sound of marching feet, both from the joyous populace and the well drilled army. The imprints of the sandals and bare feet could still be seen outside, overlaping each other all across the dirt streets, occasionally partially covered by the sand which had blown in past the city walls. Menes was forced to be present throughout the festivals in his name, and at first was happy to participate. As the week went on however, he wished more and more to just run his country and do away with the stupid enthusiasm of the commoners.

It was several years now, but it didn't seem so long ago that the land of Egypt was torn apart. Warlords from the cities and nomes gathered their forces and clashed for control of the land of the nile. Menes was son of the lord of Memphis, and through his father's riches he was able to quickly amass a strong enough army. After years of campaigning he had managed to unite the immediate area, proclaiming himself the rightful sucessor to the old kingdom. His Memphis centered state stood above the rest, but weak and divided as they were it would take time to conquer and subdue them.

Now after years of near constant warfare, Menes had finally killed off his adversaries. The last and most powerful ruled the richest Nile grain fields in all of Egypt, and he used it to his advantage. His large and rich populace constantly fielded armies well equipped, well trained, and numerous, and they almost always were able to match Menes in battle. It was only a fortnight or so ago that Menes finally won. Riding into battle himself on a grand chariot, accompanied by two fore-spearmen and a driver, he fired many an arrow into the enemy.

The battle raged on for hours in the hot Egyptian sun. Menes's men were ordered to shave their heads, and thus were quite a bit cooler than his opponents who had thick hair going down to their shoulders. Menes's army tired slower too, and by noon it was clear who could fight longer. The adversary tried to retreat, but Menes's chariot ranks flanked him, causing enough panic that his remaining troops could split them into two. From there it was only a matter of time before the frantic enemy was slaughtered like mere cattle. Menes wished he had been the one who had struck down his direct opponent, but the honor went to a son of some scribe or another. After the immediate celebration by the victorious troops, Menes congratulated the scribe's son, before having a private conversation with the army's chef.

After a short march, the enemy's village had come under Menes's rule. Menes was hoping for something grand, but the village was far inferior to Memphis. Perhaps the one great advantage it had was the superior farm fields, well orginized and run, as well as rich in large quantities of grain. The people accepted their rule with a touch of remorse, but did not dare rebel against the man they knew would be the new pharaoh. Menes and his army had a great dinner in the courtyard of the slain warlord's villa. The next morning the scribe's son was found dead from food-poisoning.

And after the already mentioned return to Memphis and ensuing celebrations, Menes found himself alone in the courtroom. It was late afternoon outside, and he could hear the crowd clammoring in the great marketplace. However, the architect had wisely placed the palace far enough away from the commoner's marketplace that Menes heard nothing over his own thoughs. Good. He stood up and walked over to the little table and stool he had ordered placed in the middle of the chamber. Sitting himself on the stool, he looked over the papyrus map on the tabletop. Several clay figures, ranging from hippopotamuses to crocodiles and falcons were on the piece of papyrus, all around Memphis. To the North lay a coast that Menes had heard of as a child but never seen with his own eyes. That would change soon. With his thumb and index finger, Menes moved both the crocodile, hippopotamus, and falcon Northward, towards this coast. But he stopped halfway. By some strange twist of fate, he decided to move his hand a bit to the right... eastward... just because. And with that he shouted for a servant to beckon his generals into the room.

The men were meeting to discuss somthing very important. The people were considering changing their way of life for the betterment of the tribe. No one thought that anyone would take this seriously, even if it was proven to allow more children and objects to be created. Everything was going as planned, the elders refused to change. The tribe would remain the same it had been. If it aint broke dont fix it. But one thing hadnt been counted on.

A man named Peter was that which no one expected. He came from a long line of tribal elders, and was as such respected greatly for one so young. When the decision was almost reached to continue moving he said no. He would not allow it. The people of the tribe would settle in the land known as the Ukraine. (maybe I should change my name to the Rus?). The supporters of Peter agreed to this, they stormed the meeting place demanding that the elders agree to do somthing for the good of the tribe for once. This was the beggening of Peter's reign.

Peter took the basic principles of city building and farming recieved from some distant tribe and began spreading them too the people of the tribe. They claimed the land they were on as their own and through trial and error developed better and better ways to farm and live off the land. Soon it was plain that this was the better way. Many more children were being born, and the farms were producing good crops. The river near the city became known as the Dnepper and the city eventually became Kiev. It would soon grow to become a great center of trade in the region. Many tribes would interact at this grand place and see its wonder. Peter hoped that this was the beggening of causing people to work together for the greater good, not just living in family groups as had happend before the meeting of tribes and formation of Kiev.

....Time will tell if his hopes will be fulfilled.

The Celts were one of great reverence. One day shamans all across the land of Britania came to the same conclusion, the great one was born. He would live for all known history and gather all the Celts together in a powerful union.

With the general support of all the known world, Spacetrvler (his given name, for he was destined to do so) set to work on making his realm more accessible. He built up the path network, allowing for a large trail between all the major tribes. With the addition of these paths and trails, clans met clans and began to trade various commodities with eachother. Upon having these new goods, clans became much more prosperous and began to grow in population.

Update I – 3000b.c.e.

Events:

The first civilized people in the world first arise in Africa. With the banning together of various tribes along the Congo River, the world’s first nation is born. The Bantu rally together behind a common monarch, intent on dominating the immediate area. In the midst of the rain forest, the army marches, equipped with bronze-tipped spears and sturdy shields, they set out to subjugate the immediate area. Instantly they are met with a harsh challenge – the Ubangian northerners, who have risen at the same time as the Bantu.

There once was a small tribe that roamed the forests of central Germany, destined to become a unified people. It wasn’t until the leader of one of the families, a man named only as Kamilian, rose to power in his tribe. Creating an army double that of any other competitor, Kamilian was able to unite the surrounding tribes to create a common city – the city of Berlin. Here he ruled the nation of a hundred years, until his death. His son, Kamilian II, has taken the reigns of the new Kingdom, and only good things can come from the German people.

The people of the Songhai, highly organized and civilized, rule from their city in Timbuktu, which their God’s have declared a paradise. However, it was far from paradise. Constant droughts keep the people suffering of malnutrition and starvation. However, it was like this until one man, Kanubi, decided to construct a canal that would bring water from the River Niger to the surrounding crops, and serve as a storing place for water when the droughts hit. The first canal was built (+1 infrastructure and +1 education) sometime at the beginning of the first age of Songhai. The city of Timbuktu and surrounding farmlands soon bolstered with population and prosperity, bringing the Songhai to the dominant nation of their region.

Just south of the prosperous city of Timbuktu is the nation of another people who have come to power. The Ashanti, establishing a tribal government to rule the numerous tribes that were united, rule an already vast and diverse nation. Nearly four hundred tribes make up the council, which is charged with the duty of making and sustaining an army. Imminent threats arise from the surrounding tribes – the Gur sheep herders to the north and the scavenging Kru to the west.

Above, the city of Rome
From a city known as Rome, the Latinians, or Romans, begin their bid for empire. Faced with the equally powerful Etruscans in the north, the Romans have readied an army of nearly five hundred strong. With the King as their general, the army is led to the north to conquer the savage Etruscans. However, the Etruscans are ready for them, and spring many traps that were pre-made. Suffering numerous casualties, the Romans retreat to fight again another day. Meanwhile, hearing of the army defeat in the north, fervent speeches by the Prince to the populace has led to the construction of the city walls (+1 defense) that now surrounds the whole city.

Carthaginian princes have ruled the village of Carthage for as long as the God’s remember. They are a stout, yet quiet, people, willing to trade then to fight. However, a new king known only as Nexus has inspired many of the noble men to create an army for fame and glory. Soon five hundred men had banded together to create the first Carthaginian army of spearmen. The army is then sent West, only to encounter numerous tribes of Numidian people. They put a stop to the Carthaginian expansion with armed force.

With the assimilation of the Sabines tribe, the Swedes rise to rule the surrounding land. Claiming complete dominance over the area has upset some neighboring tribes, who, finding a familiar enemy, have signed alliances. Isolated by a series of small rivers and dense forests, the Swedes are able to take their time to prepare for the fate of their empire before the outlying tribes attack. Meanwhile, traveling priests have made their impression upon both of the unified tribes, educated the young on how to live a life through morals. Farmland is also constantly replacing hunting parties, as the educated begin to teach the roots of agriculture (increased economy).

Scythian sheepherders decide to unite to form the nation of Scythia. Originally a mysterious and divided people, the Scythians are well adept to city life as well as steppe life, though the majority still prefers the steppe to the city block. And so the nation of horse riders is born, with a large majority rallying to their nation as the Sarmatians rise in the north, and even word of another city, called Kiev, rising to power (+500 Horsemen).

No one had a harder time uniting then the Egyptians of the Nile. Fiercely loyal to their warlord, Egyptian warriors do not give up during a battle. Rather, they fight to the end; until one army is all out of warriors. However, a wealthy father dies and leaves his son, Menes, enough of an inheritance to raise a grand army, worthy of the new Pharaoh. Commanding it himself, the chariots of the army (army divided, 250 infantry, 250 chariots) blaze into the foot soldiers of the surrounding tribes, and Egypt is established from the grand city of Memphis.

The Spanish people, who first migrated from the mountains beyond, finally settle in the fertile valley of the Tagus River. After many millennia of peaceful farming, Aragonese raiders attack the Spanish from the north and bring desperate times to the peaceful people. Rallying behind a common King, the Spanish are able to form an army and drive the Aragonese out of the valley. United and powerful, the people decide to construct a single spot where common people can live, where the farmers can come to sell their surplus, and where the King would live. This became known as Madrid. And to keep it safe from the marauding Aragonese, the Spanish built western Europe’s first walls (+1 Defense).

Muscovite nomads finally end their endless walking when a man named Peter turned a dream into reality. The Muscovites settled on a large plateau along a vibrant river, and upon that plateau they built Kiev – the first city in the world built from stone (+1 infrastructure). From here, Peter directed the defense of the Muscovites from the barbarian uprising in the south.

Arabians have always lived in the city of Mecca, the oldest city in Asia. No one really knows when it was built, directly from the ground with mud brick, or when it the builders began to use stone as well. All the Arabs know is that it’s there, and always will be. It was when the King of Mecca broke the long silence of the city and offered extensive trade with the King of Medina to the north when the alliance of the two became apparent. When the city of Medina was attacked and nearly overrun by Hyksos chariots, it was Mecca who came to save her. When the fighting was done, and the Hyksos retreated, the two Kings married their daughter and son together, forming the union of Macoroba (Increase economy).

The Celts of Southern Britain, as they were known, began as fierce warriors. Conquering almost twenty tribes, Celtia was finally pleased with the size of herself. It was then when the Celts of Britain became pacified. Roads began to be built instead of spears, and soon every village under the influence of the High Celt was connected via a small dirt path (+1 infrastructure). However, the High Celt did not deem these roads worthy of Celts, and soon spent much of the nation’s treasury on widening the roads and lining the outside with small rocks. This has helped create the best road system in the world, and has led to one of the most united nation in the world.

In the northern cold lands, known to the Muscovites as the badlands, dwells a far more intricate nation. The nation of Roddyna arises around the village of Moscow to overpower its neighbors. Through a mostly peaceful century, the new Roddy of Moscow was able to unite a surrounding region into the nation of Roddyna. Moscow, now full of trade and people, serves as the place from where Roddy derives his last army before he dies (+500 Spearmen) to protect the nation of civil atrocities.

OOC

If I did not write about your nation it is because you did not post orders. For those who didn’t post orders, I banked your income.

Btw, if you can notice, those who wrote stories generally got better outcomes in the update. They usually got a bonus of some kind. Now, this isn’t mandatory and will definitely not happen every time, but the more I get to know your nation, subconsciously the more I am going to have something increased for you to go along with the story of your nation. Just keep that in mind.

Next update is tomorrow.

Edit: Those who have no barbs, do not think yourself so lucky. Chances are there will be some in the next update.

NPC nations will be added within 2 or three updates.
