Rome
Rome was makeing great headway, greatest power in the Itallic peninsula, Romes might was great, most cites joined Rome willinglly, wanting to take part in the might of an empire soon to be, though the Etruscans, who currentlly spereated the two portions of Roman terriotry were as indipendent as ever were, for the most part peaceful enough, though since thier own full unifacation is was rather obvious that some elements- mostlly the monarchies in Etrusca, wanted to march on Rome, they simply did not have the popular support- for with the exception of hostilites at the very beginiing of history books, Rome and Etrusca had, literally, been peacful brothers, tradeing an co-operating with eachother, not bickring like school children.
though on the capitolin hill, the great temple of Iupiter continued to be built, the radience and glory of the edifice growing more and mro eby the day, with each block of marble laid, the great temple seemed to shine with a new glory, and even its greatlly unconcstructed stage- literall only the floors ahd been laid, the staute carving- of the many lesser, man sized statues that would dot the complex, and of the great staue of Iupiter himslef that was to be the crowining glory ofthe entire structue brought many sighseers to Rome, to marvel at the wonder and genious of its construction...
but, while wishing to preserve peac with Etrusca, the Romans in other areas had been maeking great strides in the feild of war- the establish ment of the
Legion system of military orginsation had come about, and to that end the army had been organised into Centuries of 100 men each, not including the 5 Officer sof each century (the Officer being the Centurion,Optio,Tessarius, Cornicen-orn blower, and the Signifer- standar bearer), the most prestious of the Centuries was the
Primagenia, or firstborn. itr was thoerized, that the optimal streght for each legion was about 1000-5000 or 6000men, but Rome, having 1,500 men, had but strenght for less then one fully optimal legion, so it was decided that cohorts, groups of severla centuries would be fomed to act an admistative unit, and for m the base of each legion, and eventually, multiple maniples would be the sub-divison of th elegion, as a unit higher then a century, but not nearlly as large as the legion itself.
with the new division of the army came a new type of trooper as well- the so called "Triarii", formed of the veterans fo the militia, these were to be the creme of the crop as far as the legions (or perhaps legion singulaer would be more appropriate!) were concerned, for the time being at least- armed with a large spear, about 12 feet long, a sord, and dagger as side arms, a large, cruved Itallis sheid, and good armor, the Triarii was a force to be reckond with on the battlefeild
Triarii- the new form of ass kicking
and with the new army reforms in tow, Rome had made great expansion in the north, icorperateing the largelly nomadic tribes of Northern Itallia into Roman terriotory, mover, to ensure that these people would soon become model Romans, they, as were the people of the cities, were given the rights as citizens, and many flocked to the new Roman city in the region, Aquleia, a city noted for its harbor, a good thing as well, for Rome had recentlly developed a flotilla of ships, each one filled with marines, who doubled often as rowers, to keep them strong and healthy, though when battle was eminent, paid workers insteand, most armed as well, would take over, so that the marines could save thier stregth for the upcoming battle.
exapansion too had occured in the south, but a most unwelcomed sight greeted the Roman settlers- a new nation, foreign from the Maceodniand and carthaiginas the Romans had grown so accustomed of,th eso called Phoencians had arrived with thier sights set on setteling Sicillia as well- to no end this infuriated the Romans, resetning that a far flung nation wished to settle land that was clearlly ther for if anyone, th enations in the area ot claim, such as Rome and Etrusca, or even Carthage, though they seemed more imposed to expand in the distand lands of Africa then in the lands of Itallia, though that matter little- what did matter was full Roman resnetment of the settlement of Sicilly, and even Sardinia to some extent, and it was thus that the Romans eagerlly conteacted thier close brethren of Etrusca, hopeing to forge an alliance in case Rome and Phoeciania came to lows over the lands of Sicillia....
