Update VIII - 600b.c.e.

Events:

Every nation that has an education of 2 discovers the antiquity age.

Byzantium, especially the city of Byzantine, continues to grow and meets the standards of the western world. High pillars made of marble and streets lined with pebbles become the common image of the trading capital of the Mediterranean (+1 infrastructure, +1 trade). Engineers are also hard at work at designing the new Dromon, though little progress is made with the terrible education that is standard in Byzantium. Pirates are also getting wealthier, though many have been sunk by the increased Byzantine navy, and the Byzantine captains are sure to have sent the pirates dock peacefully at Sparta.

Bedouin raiders begin to harass the borders of the peaceful trading nation of Macoroba. Using speedy camels and disguising themselves as citizens, the Bedouin make off with fortunes and have killed many Macoroban soldiers (decrease economy).

The Roddynians begin military expansion by forcing their way upon the Vikings in the north. Untrained, unmilitarized, primitive and divided, half of the Vikings join with the Roddyinians, while the other half is quickly mopped up by the Roddynian bowmen, who prove their ability to fight. The addition to the vast populations who begin to pay taxes and whose surplus farm protection is sold to Moscow has increase the economy of the nation. However, many of the Vikings now want the same infrastructure as the people of Moscow have, and have gone half way as to construct the city of Helsinki. The Roddyinians also have a hard time patrolling their nation, the sheer size of it means that portions go without military presence for nearly a generation, creating sectionalism. A speedier military is needed to keep the nation in check.

A religion known as Kievism, that teaches ultimate respect to the city of Kiev, and focuses primarily on converting more people to Kievism, begins to spread throughout Eastern Europe. Prussia, even though the King actively opposes it, ranks second as the nation with the most Kievists, after Muscovy. Notable minorities also exist in Illryia and Thrace.

A new order arises in Germany known as Barborossism. Though officially a religion claimed by the German royal family, it acts as nothing more then a code of law within Germany. Many swear allegiance to it, but since it offers no religious affect, they still worship their own polytheist gods.

A mysterious religion known as Rhinism also begins in the nation of Brabant. Based on trade and prosperity, the rise of the religion is mostly due to the rise of commercialism in Brabant as the markets for trade are modernized and trade routes to Nordland grow wider.

The Egyptians rebuild the city of Tyre in the lands of Phoenicia, where most of the Phoenicians that are left gather. This town, rebuilt right over the former metropolis, begins to grow but is infested with poverty due to the sluggish Phoenician economy after the war. Egypt also constructs forts of magnificent size in the west to counter Libyan attacks. The forts are made of stone, shipped from Phoenicia, and are godly structures that tower over the flat desert around them. They successfully drive off hordes of Libyan invaders, proving their successfulness. Egyptian forces are mustered in the south, where they are led to conquer Nubia. Fairing relatively well, the Egyptians capture huge tracts of land, but are soon defeated at a town known as Meroe, in the lands of Kush.

Trade continues to bustle throughout the northwestern part of Scythia, bringing in more prosperity as the city of Sevestapool is established and Black Sea trade increases rapidly. Meanwhile, the Scythians soldiers again prove their willingness to expand their nation in taking large swaths of grasslands in the east. However, the large nation is becoming a burden to keep control of, and the Scythian troops are beginning to be spread thin.

A plan to attack and destroy the Etruscan state within Rome fails miserably. Encountering 30, sometimes higher, foot walls, the Roman ladders are quickly thrown down. Then, once that wall is taken, there remains another. And then another. These triple, and sometimes quadruple, 20 foot high walls, twelve feet wide, are present throughout all of Etrusca. Even the smallest village has this protection. Therefore, Romans are slaughtered when they get near. The Etruscans then use this attack to conjure up huge support among the populace, creating an army of archers and new protective catapults. The Helvetians in the north continue to terrorize the northern lands, more and more northern Romans are considering taking up their own nation and defending from these hordes.

The nations of Afghanistan, Indus, and Kashmir have been founded in the east. While the nation of Tibet rules to the far east, having no record of the rule ever ending.

The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and the Spanish all make peace. The Phoenicians are now settled with the islands of Sardinia.

The Byzantine trading nation, a very rich and prosperous nation. So dim-witted was the common and wealthy peoples, that a Macedonian merchant once exclaimed,"By the King, there people cannot add!" Those were just some of the reasons why the best engineers of the nation could not suceed in designing the Dromon. The King, a brilliant person despite his surroundings, had declared that every village will have at least a small school, and the major cities, Byzantium and Erzurumo, to have a school, and a podium. Where professors and teachers will discuss subjects with the listeners below.

Trade, Byzantinum's mainstay source of income for so long, was still in place. Trade, the king thought, brought the wealthy to the top, and the poor to the bottom. To better aid the peasants, farmers, and normally the lower classes. The king decided to declare a new law:
"By the order of the King of Byzantium, all of the wealthy classes, must PAY their employees, not offer them goods of the same price. And to the same extent, the merchants and nobles will have to pay taxes to the Crown to better defend the nation and trade, Long Live the King!"

Many thought that taxing them was a terrible idea, but as long as the trade routes remain as safe, and possibly even expand it's trade routes, they had no problem...

Byzantine Orders
-increase education
-expand navy
-continue research into the Dromon
-build road to Euzurumo
-start trade with Macedonia, Sparta, Thrace and Hittities if they agree
-have the navy cooperate with the Macedonian navy to hunt down the pirates and defend the trade convoys

Wonders:

Sonni Ali looked out over the city of Timbuktu from the balcony of his palace. It was a grand city, the greatest in the known world. From his perspective the city could be seen, shimmering and glittering in all its glory in the warm evening Saharan sun. But from a closer distance, signs of decline could be seen throughout the great capital. The once-bustling markets were now empty or nearly so, as economic woe struck the Songhai populace. The forges of industry that had been built to fight the war had blackened the glittering white limestone of the city's buildings. The effort that had been expended arming and training troops for the war had come at the cost of decreased patronage of the city's cultural and learning establishments.

Yes, it was the war that had led to the Kingdom's decline. Sonni Ali realized this in his final hours; realized the folly of his pride in demanding Mali's surrender, realized the ill-tempered brashness of his declaration of war. As the sun slowly set over his city, Sonni Ali realized all this. If Songhai was ever to restore her full glory, it would not be through the bloodshed of warfare, but through education, and culture, and trade; these were the foundations upon which the Songhai nation had been built, and to these fundamentals the Kingdom would return.

"So much left to do," though the King. "So much for one, inconsequencial man..."

And without finishing that though, the King of Songhai died, his eyes closing for the last time as the Saharan sun slipped below the roofline of the great University. Peace, at last, had come to Sonni Ali.

Some one hour later, Prince Askia Mohammed entered his father's sleeping chambers on the upper floor of the palace, where he found his father's body, lying cold in a chair on the balcony, eyes closed, at peace. At the sight of his father and sovereign dead, Askia dropped to his knees and wept. Wept for his father, for his family, for his nation. The King was dead. Long live the King.

Askia Mohammed was the eldest of Sonni Ali's three sons, and the only of them to survive the Malian War. Like his brothers, Askia had fought with the elite Malian Mercenaries, each corps commanders, leading one hundred men into battle. Askia's brothers had each fought valiantly with their corps in Mali; each had died valiantly with their soldiers, too. When the war ended, Askia returned home to take on a new role as the Prince of Songhai, his father's second-in-command and heir-apparent. Now he took on yet another title: King of Songhai.

Askia Mohammed was a warrior prince. Having received the training of the Malian Mercenaries and even led them in battle, he was the best soldier Songhai could produce: strong, smart, loyal, and aggressive. He could fight any man in single close combat and come out the victor. No man in all the Kingdom could match him in the throwing of a spear or the shooting of a bow. However, despite his military upbrining and his martial valor, he was first and foremost a man of peace and learning.

Askia had graduated from the University first in his class, with degrees in literature, poetry, and philosophy, minoring in engineering and architecture. These varying fields of learning allowed the new King to do everything from writing a treatise on philosophy to designing a new monument or building. These skills would serve him well during his reign. So too would his knowledge of the other nations of the world, namely Mali and Ashanti, and of the Spirits worshipped by his countrymen. Askia would attempt to improve relations with the neighboring states, to foster trade between them. He would also work to improve the Songhai nation's favor with the Spirits, and at the same time increase the nationalism and culture of Songhai, by building a new Temple, grander than any built before, to replace the old, declining Temple in Tikbuktu.

As the sun rose over the silhouette of the University the next morning, Askia Mohammed arose from beside his father's body and looked out over his capital. In the rays of the morning sun, the great white city shined like the stars of heaven. Immediately snapped from his melancholy by the beauty of the greatest city on earth, King Askia Mohammed lifted his father's crown from the dresser. The young new King slowly and purposefully placed the crown on his own head, finalizing the transition of power. The morning sun shined in all its glory, fanning a million beams of dazzling light over Askia as the golden crown was settled upon his noble brow. A new day had dawned for the Songahi Kingdom. Long live the King.

Orders:
-1 economy on Infrastructure. Concentrate on irrigation of potentially fertile land, constructing mines in hills and other places where it might yield large mineral resources, and building harbors and waystations along the Niger River to accomodate water travel up and down the river.
-1 economy on Education. Build schools in every medium- to large-sized village, and provide elementary education to all Songhai children free of charge. In the major cities, construct smaller universities, called "Campuses", in which local and regional students may study all the same topics as are taught at the University in Timbuktu, albeit not as well.
-Expand in all possible directions using the 500 spearmen. The Malian Mercenaries remain in Timbuktu to defend the city.
-Change ruler to King Askia Mohammed.
-Begin wonder, "King Askia's Temple." This temple will be the largest and most beautiful ever built. Architects from all over Songhai will be brought to Timbuktu to design the magnificent structure, although Askia Mohammed will be the leader of the design team. The temple will consist of a long rectangular Outer Chamber, constructed entirely of perfectly quarried and polished white marble. The Outer Chamber will be furnished with rich tapestries; white marble, gold, and silver statues of the Spirits; altars for making personal sacrifices to the Spirits; prayer rugs on which the faithful kneel to pray; and all the other trapping of a great temple. Within the Outer Chamber will be a smaller rectangular chamber, its shape running parallel to the Outer Chamber; this will be the Inner Chamber, the Holy of Holies. Only the High Priesthood of Timbuktu is permitted to worship here. In the center of the Inner Chamber is located a great solid-gold altar, inlayed with silver, gems, and ivory, upon which the High Priests make their offerings to the Spiritis. In front of this altar are prayer rugs upon which the High Priests pray, and bowls of consecrated holy water from the Niger with which they cleanse themselves, and hence Songhai, from sin. Atop a second altar, behind the offering altar, is the Eternal Flame of the Spirits. This miraculous fire is constantly kept by the Priesthood; so long as it burns, the Spirits will bless the Songhai people. Outside the Outer Chamber, white marble columns surround the structure, acting both asthaetically and to hold up the massive roof. The roof is not entirely solid, but has many skylights which let sunlight into the Outer Chamber. At the entrance to the Temple is a great marble statue of the Spirit of Order, higher than the tallest man in Songhai and enthroned in a seat of gold. The inscription on the Spirit's throne reads: "May all enter this Holy Temple to worship the true Spirits; and may all who worship by the Covenant be absolved and blessed." (in summary, picture a temple looking like the Parthenon and acting like Solomon's Temple ;) )

The Helvetians in the north continue to terrorize the northern lands, more and more northern Romans are considering taking up their own nation and defending from these hordes.

they shouldnt be, considering i made an offensive agiasnt them in my orders...

To Mali:
I know we have been bitter enemies in the past, but I, the new King Askia Mohammed, wish to improve the relations between our peoples. I wish to open trade with your nation, which will benefit us both by producing great wealth for our merchant classes and bringing in new luxury goods to improves our people's ways of life. Would agree to this trade of goods and ideas?

ooc: My religion is not swedish, only sweden influenced

ic

The Religion of Nordland:

The Relgion of Nordland, Triism, is not the religion that the swedish had. Instead it is influenced from several religions, most noteably the swedish.

There are 3 Godesses and several other spirits that form the religion in Nordland. The 3 goddesses are:
Freja - of the sun, the harvest and of fertility
Selene - of wisdom, intellect and music
Eleos - of warfare, death and the night(moon)

There are also several hundreds of spirits living in the land but these are not worshipped, instead they are left alone or maybe set up small alters to keep them in a good mood.

The 3 goddesses are worshipped in temples across the land. There are currently 3 gigantic temples being built(1 for each) in the capitol.
A couple of times during the year each goddes is worshipped in rituals that include 1 or all 3 of the goddesses(never for 2 at a time, forbidden by the 3 so that no jealous is created). These rituals are led by priests. The largest rituals are led by the Highpriestess.
Priests are organized into grades(3 is the lowest grade) where men can only join the lowest grade.
Grade 1 is the Highpriestess and grade 2 is a grade only occupied by the most talented priestesses.

New UU - Roddyna Ryders
Unit Type: Mounted/ Horsemen
Unit Jobs: Wartime- Scouts, Peacetime- Military Communication Network
Description:
With the rapid expansion of the Roddyna borders continuing, it had become clear that the old system for the military recieving orders, accoplishing them and comming back for more orders was not efficient enough. There was great need for a more efficient way to get orders to the Military forces far from the capitol. The best horsemen from the Nation were gathered to form the Roddyna Ryders. Their primary job would be to relay the orders for the military out in the nation. They would be the quick communication link between the government and the military forces. The Ryders were spread out over the whole nation in a spyderwed like dispersal.
The idea was that they would spread orders, information and requests for military presence in a way similar to how rumors spread in a community. Any rider that got information that needed to be passed on, would ride to the locations of the Ryders around him and tell them, they would in turn ride their fresh horses to those around them and so on. This way the information or order was always riding on a fresh horse toward its destination.
If an order was needed to be kept secret then it would follow a specific line of Ryders, instead of spreading out on the web. But most orders were spread as far as possible so that if the Military unit they were intended for happened not to be at the place where the Rulers expected them to be, they would still get the order. All Military units were ordered to keep the neerest Ryders informed of their location at all times.
This allowed the military to quickly learn what was needed of it without having to go back to the capitol to find out. It also allowed the Government (including Town or Province Governors) to summon the military if it was needed for anything, the Roddyna Ryders would relay the request for military presence in all directions, and both the Capitol and the closest military unit would quickly learn of the need. Once a Military Unit was responding to a request or order, they would send that info back along the network, so that both those that issued the order and other military units knew that the request/order was being executed.

House of Roddy - Roddy IX
The addition of the Viking Barbarian lands to Roddyna had been a great accomplishment for Roddy's father, it had provided a port on the Baltic sea, and as the Vikings wanted all the comforts of the average Roddynian, the existing businesses in Roddyna got a great boost in customer base. This had made a great impact on Roddyna's Economy and now Roddy IX felt that he needed to repay the new citizens of Roddyna for their great contribution.
A large work force was sent to the new lands to improve the infrastructure of the new Towns and the City of Helsinki to something more inline with the rest of Roddyna. A road was laid from Moscow to Helsinki, and a sea port was also constructed on that road.
The Vikings reported that there was two highly civilized nations on their other border and Roddy wanted to start communications with those nations as quickly as possible to see if any trade agreements could be reached.
His newly trained Ryders would take a while to balance out how many were needed where, but already they were making communication with the army easier.
For many generations, the descendants of Roddy the First had ruled and improved the nation of Roddyna. The Council of Elders and Governors still officialy held more power then Roddy (who was technicaly just another member of the Council), but for generations now it was a very rare occasion when the Council would disagree with any of Roddy IX's ancestors, and he had yet to experience any significant resistance from them himself. He had seen other countries where the "Monarchs" were considered descendents of Gods and where they held all the power they wanted, and it had intrigued him. Roddy had his most loyal and trustworthy subordinates to test out the idea of Roddy being crowned a Czar in their various circles to see if such an idea would be acceptable to the population at large.
The result was less then pleasant. While most of the farmer peasantry seemed to be fine with the idea, the more educated classes like the merchants, priests and elders and most of the city dwelers were clearly against it. They had gotten used to being able to atleast in some way influence the flow of the government, and did not want someone to think he was devinely destined to rule over them. Even though they were fine with the fact that the clear rullers of the nation for generations, the Roddys, had been eachothers' elder sons.
Over the generations, the educational system of Roddyna had become less and less centralized on Moscow. The large schools in some of the other cities had come to rival that of Moscow, and some of the more Specialized Towns (like mining or smithery towns) had surpassed the Moscow Schools in their specific subjects or trades. Roddy IX wanted to bring the spotlight of education back onto his home city and capitol of his great nation. He started construction of a great University, which when completed would house the greatest scholars Roddyna had and take education to another level. Unlike most of the other schools of the nation, this University would not have a place for the small children just starting their education. This University would attract those that had shown a tallent in their chosen subject, trade or skill, and give them a place to advance the science of their chosen proffesion. Large labaratories for the experiments needed for the natural sciences and halls designed for good acoustics that would allow many people to listen to the ideas and explanations of one individual would make the exchange and advancement of ideas easier. This project would take years, if not decades to construct, but would be the envy of the known world when complete.
