StKNES5: A New Lease on NES

To: Nations allied against Nihon
From: Malaysia

Malaysia suggests that we centralize our command to better deal with the Nihonese. We suggest that temporarily, we put all of our offensive forces under the Command of Malaysian generals until the war is over. You will still control the mainland defense forces, and the invasion of Korea.

So, what say you?

OOC: I need a quick response please, I can only post orders for the next 6 hours, then I have to leave.

Kamilian- I was looking at the list of cities and I noticed something. Three of my cities are marked as ports, even though they aren't. Those cities are Jerusalem, Damascus, and Medina. Mecca reallly shoudn't be a port, but since you made Jiddah part of Mecca, it should remain as a port city.
********
Jabesh-Gilead, capital of Palestine. It had been many centuries since the Palestinians had left the idolotrous beliefs of the other Arabs and adopted the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But despite this, they still maintained a distinct culture that had by now becom a hybrid of Arab and Israelite cultures. They loved the dessert and maintained a custom of sending all boys upon the age of 13 to travel with one of the Jewish Bedouin tribes of the area for several years. But, they also farmed the fields and loved trade more than war, just like the Israelites. And it was in Jabesh-Gilead that this hybrid culture reached its apex. The synagogues had minarets and domes and the governers palace, a less large and luxurious version of Solomon's, had both the large grounds for Bedouin camps, so characteristic of Arabs, and the constant reminders of G-d, so characteristic of Israelites. They had their own form of Judaism, very similar to that of the rest of Israel, but with the effects of a dessert existance plainly visible to the naked and unexperienced eye. From the focalization on the hospitality of G-d, to even using the old name of Allah for G-d, theirs was a unique Judaism that still fit in quite nicely with the mainstrem traditions.

From Austria
To Israel:
That's a good solution. We accept. But if Rome does not accept to this compromise, we will have to find another way to collect our rightful compensation.

From Austria
To Rome:
What say you about Israel's compromise deal?

From Fuzhou, Shanghai, and Vietnam
To Malaysia:
Agreed.

OOC: I know, Israelite, but on the map, they're bordering on the coast, so they are ports on the map. If I was doing everything with the cities by the real-life scale, then half of Nihon's cities wouldn't be ports.
But the map hardly offers a lot of space in certain areas.
Orders are due at midnight. Whoever has not sent yet, there are still 4 hours to do so - more than enough time. If you don't get a chance to do it cuz you weren't able to log on, sorry, maybe not your fault, but that's not my problem.

Kamilian- I see what you mean. BTW I was reading through some of the older diplos and I noticed that you were refering to the Papuans as Polynesian. If I am correct, and I am pretty sure that I am, the Papuans have no connection to the Polynesians ethnically, culturally, or linguisticaly. They are ethnically related to the Andamanian and Bismark Achipelago natives, as well as more disantly (but much closer than to the Polynesians) the Aborigines. The only Papuans with any ties to the Polynesians are some tribes on the northern and far-western coasts. Among most tribes cultural diffusion took place where the tribes are ethnically Papuan, but speak a Polynesian language. You can also find a number of tribes who are ethnically Polynesian but speak a Papuan language. Just though I would clear that up.

eh well here they're Polynesian

David Yisroel ben Mohammed, a Palestinian, was walking the streets of Jabesh-Gilead. He noticed that the city was growing and changing since the trade with Rome had begun to flow into the provincial towns. The markets now had the famous Italian wines that were so craved, despite the fact that Israels Golan Heights produced wine that the rest of the world was jealous for. But possibly the biggest change was the new bathouse that was being constructed. Like in all towns that harbored Roman merchants, most of whom where now Jewish, the Roman luxuries soon followed. David walked up to the construction site and asked hsi manager what he was suposed to due today. They had been building for several months now, but the bathouse appeared to be nearing completion. His job for today was not to transport the Roman marble from the markets to the site like usual, but instead to bring in the wood that would be used to heat the baths very soon. David was pleased beyond belief. Soon even he would be lazing the day away soaking his soar muscles in the hot baths before getting a massage from one of the Roman women who had been 'encouraged' to come to Jabesh-Gilead to fill these positions. Yes, Jabesh-Gilead would soon have the luxurious amenities that the Palestinians had been promised when they abbandoned the old ways to came to Israel.

A King of Kings: A Caribbean History (revised edition)

Serdan, the King of Kings, to whom life was to precious, now expanded his empire south, along the Lesser Antilles, traveling through Greneda and St. Vincent, spreading his grace to all those poor disillusioned people still lurking in savagery. To them Serdan would bring peace, and now the construction of great buildings to rival even those temples of the their Aztec neighbors. Drona his council and chief engineer had drawn up plans of harbors on the island of Barbados, hoping to make it the center of trade between the islands. Schools, shrines, large temples, and ports were all being built or sponsored by the king Serdan, and many a people were happy underneath his rule. Still there was unrest, words had been spread that Serdan was to weak, giving away ships to the Aztecs on the Great Lands, people suspected that he was simply a puppet but these were few and far between. In general the citizens of the Caribbean were taking a liking to their leader, seemingly for the first time in many years. He himself had joined the expansion along the Lesser Antilles and had spent time with many of the people, educating them on the ways of the Arwaks and then the hated Caribs. Much of the islands contained dense jungles but that would soon change, Serdan and Drona, the great engineer, had plans for using the lumber to create buildings and maybe even use the limestone deposits in islands like Barbados, instead of trying to bring stone blocks all the way from the Great Lands.

Sea villages all across Eire were busy preparing for the returning of the sailors, preparing great feasts and parties in honor of their sucess.
Fiona H'lok, a young lass of 8 years, was busy gathering the harvest for the great celebration in Naas, plucking potatos, carrots, and cabbage from the bounty giving soil. She looked up to wipe the sweat from her brow but was stopped. Just over the rolling hills she spotted the billowing sails of the fleet, the flag of the King waving at the top mast. They were back, the sailors had returned, her father was home.
Fiona dropped the vegetables she had plucked from the earth and sprinted back toward's the village to tell everyone of the fleets return. She leaped over logs and ran across the brook where she fished, the animals fled before her as she sped through the trees.
"They're here! They're here! My daddy's back!" She squealed in the town square. Those around her looked perplexed as to what she meant, wondering who 'they' were.
"The fleet you boofs! The sailors are back!" She tried again. This time a feeling of joy and relief spread through the crowd at the news. Quikly everyone began bustling about, hurrying to ready the food for the feast and set up the celebration, as well as to help the ships dock.
Little Fiona ran to the docks as soon as she finished helping with the foods, looking around the crowded pier for he father. She clambered between lovers, under strangers, and around friends before running with open arms to her father.
"Daddy!!!!" she cried, "Daddy-Daddy-Daddy!" She lept into his arms, giving him a better welcoming than he could have asked for.
This is what Eire was truly about. It had nothing to do with war or even with protecting the weak. The nation was created from clans and based around the family, and even after seperation family remained the basis throughout every village.

The waves roled past as Joshua looked out form the deck of the great trade ship. Joshua's father was the new representative for Socotra and the Maldives and they were heading for Aqaba and Jerusalem right now.joshua had never seen a city bigger than tiny little Aqaba and was more excited than words can tell. He knew that Aqaba would be huge, but what he was really looking forward to was Jerusalem. His father had even promised that they could see the new Temple when it was finished. Joshua was so full of excitment that he didin't realize that his father was calling him until one of the sailors nocked the boy on his head to wake up.
"Joshua, come down here, I want to show you something."
"Coming father!" Joshua yelled back. He ran down below deck to see what it was that his father was so urgent about showing him. When he arrived in his father's cabin he saw his father hunched over a large peace of parchment and a smaller peace of papyrus. As he walked toward the large desk, his father noticed his prescence and spoke to him without looking up from the parchemnt.
"This just arrived by messenger dove, or I should say doves, from an associate of mine in Tel-Aviv. I thought you might like to see it." Joseph looked down at the parchment as his father moved over. It appeared to be a map of all of the known world. From the rich isle of Zanzibar, all the way up to the mysterious isles of the Irish. West to the dessert of Fez and east to the Maldives that his father now represented in Knesset. The great ports of Tel-Aviv, Dubruvnik, Tangiers, Cagillari, Lisbon, Byzantium, Rome, and Dublin all apeared. The trade routes that ran through the Mediterranean and Bay of Biscay drawn in gold and silver. The many nations in blue, green, red, orange, brown, or violet depending on their allegances and stances towards Israel. The continents of Lybia, Europa, and Asia shown with the coast lines in an elegant indigo that was obtained from the Phoenician dye makers who had long lived under the House of David and the holy Law. It was as much a work of art as a display of information. The only disconcerting thing about the map was that at several points the world seemed to stop existing. The Gulf of Guinea, the Maldives, Zanzibar, the Greater Isle of Eire, the Tigris River, these where the limits of Israelite navigation. Though they new of more lands than any other known nation, this was not enough. Israel wanted more. Yes, Solomon drove Israel to know all that it could.
Joseph, of all people, espressed this. He was fond of ships and the sea. He had accurately maped out the coast of Qadub when he was but 10 years old. He loved to learn of new places and discover new things. His father new this. That was why he had called the boy down. His father, Yakov, wanted the best for his son. And his son could achieve more in cartography and the navy than he could anywhere else. Despite the wishes o Joseph's mother, Yakov encourages his son to pursue cartography and sailing rather than Torah law and the Levitical works. His son would most certainly not become a politician like his father and mother, but he would achieve more greatness than the two put together if he just pursued his own talents.

Update 15 - 800 BCE

”The unholy beasts will become holy beasts
Upon conquering the holy land
And will spread the holy words
Across the empires they conquer.
-Prophecy of the Great One Zoroaster of Persia

The Persian Shah and the Zoroastrian priests have sworn allegiance to the so-called “Pashtun Empire”. The Shah has lost his title as ruler of Persia, but his family has been provided for and live relatively well in the capital of Persia. Different Afridi warlords have taken over administrative positions and partitioned Persia amongst themselves. Parts of the Persian military have also sworn allegiance to the new masters. The rest have disbanded and returned to their old lives, not bothering to fight for a country that surrendered. The enigmatic leader of the Afridis, the Dallarni Khan, has been named as the Defender of the Zoroastrian Faith.
Meanwhile, the Afridi military juggernaut continues moving westward. Iraq has been completely overrun, due to its poor defenses and military strength (or lack thereof). The largely-Zoroastrian Babylonians have not resisted the newcomers, as they are armies of the new Defender.
The Iraqi Emir refused to surrender, nor did he accept conversion to Zoroastrianism, and was given to a mob of Zoroastrian fanatics, who lynched him. In fact, it’s a dark time indeed for any and all Iraqis (ethnic Arabs born in Babylonia) in the occupied country. Though the Pashtun soldiers did not encourage the actions of the Babylonians, the latter immediately sought revenge on all Iraqis for years of occupation and slavery (although in reality the Arab occupation was quite mild once the Emirate was established and in fact many Iraqis embraced Zoroastrianism). Attacks occurred across the country, the most brutal being the massacre of the entire Iraqi population of the southern town of Basra.
Israel takes a proactive stance on the Afridi Pashtun threat. Their fleet has been dispatched to the Pashtun coasts. However, since there was no direct connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, the fleet was forced to head westward and south along the African coasts. So far they made it to just south of the Songhai Empire’s northern border. The Pashtuns got wind of this mission and now know that Israel is no friend of theirs – at this point, Israel and the Pashtun Empire may as well be at war.

The Georgian dynasty has died out. According to the countries guidelines for succession, the next of kin – which turns out to be the Azerbaijani Emperor – is the rightful new heir. Thus, Georgia and Azerbaijan unite into the Greater Armenian Empire, the capital moved to the great city of Yerevan.
The one snag in the fusion of the two Armenian kingdoms is the huge difference in religion – Georgia is primarily Jewish, while Azerbaijan is overwhelmingly Zoroastrian. Complicating matters is the fact that the Azerbaijani monarch is a fanatical Zoroastrian and does not hide his anti-Jewish stances.
Already, some Georgian Jews have fled north to Crimea, which has accepted its fellow Armenians.

The Israelite-brokered compromise between feuding Austria and Rome has worked, it looks like. Anti-Roman demonstrations and riots along Austria’s southern border have diminished a little bit: after all, they only got half of what they wanted – Rome still owed 2 economy points.
Anti-Jewish riots and attacks have likewise diminished considerably, as it had been the Israelites who brokered the compromise deal. The Habsburgs have donated as much money as they could spare, since Austria’s economy had deteriorated, to building a new synagogue in Vienna.
The first payment of reparations had also had a psychological and economical effect on the Austrians. In support of the Habsburg dynasty, many Austrians had begun working their lands and jobs with determination to restore the infrastructure, and Vienna is in uproar of support for the thus-successful Habsburg monarchy.

The Romans have finally remembered about their rebellious Northern Dalmatian province, which is now calling itself the Zagreb Republic.
The full might of Roman offensive soldiers attacked the Slavs. It was surprising, then, to see that many engagements were won by the Slavs – yes, the Zagreb Republic has defended itself! Having gained not only many volunteers eager to fight for their liberty but also used all available finances on military increases, the Zagreb Republic has for the most part repelled the Roman assault. But while the Zagreb Republican army’s perseverance was the psychologically-deciding victory factor this time, the true practical reason for their victories is the appearance of Slovak troops in their territory, who coordinated the defenses and the few counter-attacks that were available.
SLOVAKIA: -200 Archers, -300 Spearmen
ROME: -700 Swordsmen, -300 Horsemen
ZAGREB: -300 Spearmen, -400 Swordsmen

Much to Portugal’s chagrin and outrage, the Israelites continue occupying Sardinia and the Balearics! On top of that, Israel has not paid the reparations payment which would at least signal that Israel is committed to honoring the treaty that it virtually wrote up.
As such, Sardinian unrest intensifies and the Balearic Portuguese have risen as well.
ISRAEL: -50 Spearmen

The anti-Nihonese coalition has made a daring move to liberate Korea. However, that is not easy. Though the Koreans want independence, none have assisted the anti-Nihonese armies. The Nihonese troops were ready, as well, and in multiple battles, the Shanghai soldiers were forced to pull back. As such, only some areas east of the border between Shanghai and Nihonese Korea have been liberated.
Naval engagements around the Korean coasts were also hugely in Nihonese favor. Many Shanghai ships were lost in the battles to seize control of the Korean coasts and harbors and thus prevent Nihonese supply lines from making it to the occupation forces.
However, a good note for the anti-Nihonese was the successful taking of Sakhalin. Never having been very populated in the first place, the island was thus relatively sparsely populated, and even then mostly by native Sakhaliners unassimilated into the Nihonese culture. Because of this successful capture, anti-Nihonese managed to land in northern Hokkaido and have also managed to establish a beachhead in northeastern Korea.
To try and cope with Nihon’s apparent naval superiority, Shanghai and Fuzhou have finalized agreements and have united together as well, renaming their union as the Chinese-Choson Empire.
NIHON: -300 Spearmen; -50 Galleys, - 20 Triremes
MALAYSIA: -100 Archers, -100 Swordsmen
SHANGHAI: -400 Swordsmen, -100 Archers

After hearing of plans to invade their lands, the Maya tribes have coalesced and pre-emptively struck the Aztec Empire. They expected much local resistance, in addition to that obviously put up by the troops, but were amazed to find many southern Aztecs welcoming them into their villages and towns. Everywhere that the Maya managed to penetrate, the old polytheistic belief structures have been restored, Quetzalist-only temples being re-converted into traditionalist.
AZTEC EMPIRE: -400 Spearmen, -20 Horse-Archers

Taking the opportunity of the Maya invasion, a tribe of peoples called the Miwoks has risen against the Aztec Empire. They are among those that accepted Quetzalism, but the Miwoks no longer want to be part of the Aztec Empire.

The Illini have rebuffed the New Illini offers of aid and military training. All New Illini emissaries that crossed their border were immediately sent back by Old Illini troops.

Muscovy has lost its short fight. The Muscovite Tsar was taken to the Karjalian capital and executed for crimes against the Karjalian sovereignty. Sinimustvalge Karjal has annexed the territories not occupied by the Bulgars to themselves, apparently according to a secret deal between the two.
The Bulgars, meanwhile, have invaded Crimea. Just as with the Magyar invasions centuries earlier, this time the Crimeans were also not strong enough, and have lost their freedom as well. The Bulgar invasion occurred after the first wave of Georgian Jews emigrated into the country.
Another victim of Bulgar aggression is Balticum. No match for the aggressive styles of the Bulgars, the Baltic armies fell, and with them Klaipeda, the Baltic capital.

NPC Diplomacy
From Portugal
To Israel:
Where’s our reparations? And why have you not withdrawn from the islands?

From Slovakia
To Rome:
Withdraw your troops from the Slavic lands and more bloodshed will be avoided.

From Dallarni Khan Emperor, Defender of the Zoroastrian Faith
To King Solomon

Your assault upon the Pashtun Persian Empire shall be repaid in kind, your cities will be laid to waste for your attempts to destroy the Zoroastrian Faith and convert all of the World to the Judaic worship. Even as you are a fool, I the noble Khan Emperor following the splendid faith of Zoroastrianism will continue to allow any Jews under my Empire to live in peace. However, we offer you one last chance for peace, we demand the entire income of the Israelite Nation for 100 years to be turned over to me the Khan Emperor and we will not pursue this and perhaps even live in peace.

OOC
Israelite, I know that in the diplomacy, you had agreed to withdraw and pay reparations, but if you don’t put that in orders, then that means that it was not meant to be done and thus the treaty has been ignored.

Stats will be done by tomorrow morning.

You may have noticed on the map that all cities/towns, except the nation’s capital, are equal size boxes now. This is because a) it takes up a lot less room on the map, and b) I don’t feel like updating the names of the cities every time – hell, I don’t even know which half of them are which at this point. So the only cities that will be on the front page now are the important ones - centers of trade, education, etc. Since you wouldn't know which cities you have anymore when starting trade routes, I guess I will replace the "center of trade" with the "center of commerce", and each such center would give you an extra spending point every 2nd or every 3rd or so turn or something like that. Either that or the "center" crap will also be eliminated, which I don't really wanna do cuz it might still have some kind of potential for something regarding bonuses in stats (I just can't figure out what at the moment).

Orders are due Friday 10 PM US Central Time. That is about 5 days – plenty of time, so I don’t want to hear no excuses about why you can’t sign on the internet, because I’m busy during the week, too, now, but I still try to check the thread and do whatever NPC diplo is necessary.
