Governor Van der Ploeg rubs his forehead. He is middle aged, balding, and round, but he still has the arms of a blacksmith.

"You're just going to let them get away with this?"
"General, their militias are huge and they're aggressive as hell. If I didn't give them the response that they wanted, we'd be in hip deep."
Jameson fumes.
"Are you saying that you have no faith in my abilities?"
"No, I'm saying that I will not fight two enemies at once. Besides, if they want to run off the first time something doesn't go their way, then we don't want them. Let them have their own country."
"But, they papers, you'll be remembered as a coward!"
"One day, they'll thank me for the lives of the boys I saved, instead of vilifying me for the ones I refused to kill."

Perhaps we should call it even, then? If a state or people wishes to return to the Union, then they should be allowed to do so.
