STR-01: The Scorched Lands

Alright then - a basic write up as it was another quiet turnset.

We are (just) losing cash @ 50% research and as always we are desperate for happiness. Not much can be done about either for now. The priorities I see are to keep our economy moving the right direction. That means that I am not going to be founding another city in these turns. As it turns out, a barb city has sprung up on the favoured city site (or just beside it), so founding there is out for now in any case.

Also to penny pinch futher, I'm wasn't keen to add to the military either. I let queued builds finish, but concentrated on continuing with Theatres and happiness buildings. Also as most of the other civ's have gunpowder, they won't be a long way off rifles. I wasn't interested in stocking up on tech inferior troops and paying maintenance on them considering (for now at least) we can't invade anywhere and we can't be invaded either.

I noticed that we have barb macemen about now. Its getting dangerous out in the fog.

As it turned out I razed two barb cities on my watch, Aryan and Bantu. Lost a couple of troops, but with my feelings above, I didn't much mind. For the record Bantu gave pocket change - Aryan was worth over 100 gold.

:hmm:

This made me think a bit. Our best source of quick cash might be barb city razing in the short term. Perhaps we should allow a few a spring up and grow a size or two and then raze.

We don't have any good trades available and we are a way behind the tech leaders. The only upside being Russia is trailing us! Optics came in and I went Printing Press. We need all the commerce boost we can get. I started reconfiguring Old Sahari's cottages to farms. Its not a science centre, much better to max out its pop and hammer production. Do not whip here if at all possible, it will grow back too slowly.

Whipped at P-Fury and Beshbalik in my turns. Beshbalik I've MM to not grow as it is at happy limit.

Wasn't a lot I could do with the workers, mostly some roading.

I thought Ralph would be up. Anyway - I cannot play before Sunday... :sad: We've got an important game tomorrow :D

Yeah, good luck tomorrow, it should be an interesting match as both teams play good attacking football (no-one here in the Netherlands can believe Germany is playing better than the Dutch national team). Since I also have a German heritage, I can still support a team in the World Cup.

Ohne Holland fahren wir nach Berlin!:D

:lol:Thank you. I'll watch the game after work in a nice pub in Berlin near Ku'damm with a hopefully big screen. And I hope for an offensive soccer match. I'm quite surprised with our team. I expected Jürgen Klinsmann to surprise us but I never expected such good results. In the German "Bundesliga", such soccer is hardly known so far.

Indeed, if Germany wins the World Cup with attacking football the Bundesliga could become more offensive as well, if Klinsmann proves that kind of football can win prizes. I was actually hoping a country that never won the Cup yet would win this time, but with Ukraine (not much chance) and Portugal (I just can't forgive Figo for his Schwalbe), that hope's pretty much gone;)

Anyway, the roster for this SG is kinda screwed up with skips and swaps all over the place, so I'll try to come up with a new one in a few minutes (with blastoid absent since June 21st, don't be surprised if I'm first again!:p )

Well, I decided not to change the roster, we'll just start from the top again.

Roster:
1) Strauss --> UP! again:crazyeye:
2) Ralph_Jackson --> on deck
3) Pvblivs
4) blastoidstalker --> where art thou?
5) Kanga_DU

Since I won't play until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest anyway, Ralph will probably have enough time to recover from his trip, and Pvblivs enough time to recover from his hangover:mischief:. We'll see what's happened to blastoid, if he misses his next turnset we'll just take him out of the roster and play with 4 until (if) he returns, after which he will regain his place among the Khans.

Well, I have time now and I will play now if you don't mind. Back in an hour here :) Did you say, I was up? Yes I am :D I would say some kind of a swap with whomsoever

Sure, do play (you probably already are, but okay). I'll follow up this evening

I whip the Bank at New Sarai and start a Forbidden Palace here. This will help our economy significantly. Why haven't we done this before? At Ning Siah the Collosseum is whipped as the city grows unhappy and I want an effective whip (3 pop).

In 1673 Judaism spreads to our land. We might consider to switch to it, as it offers more happiness. May i tell you something? We need happiness :rolleyes:

We found Straussburg in 1676 and immidiately our costs explode even higher. Forbidden Palace should and will help here. We start a library as this city will have lots of commerce and we need the culture for food access.

Someone has adopted Emancipation and we suffer from it. :( Wee need it as well. Garrisons are restructured to enforce happiness with the sword. This is the reason we need military: Every single troop gives us happiness.

In 1688 with a lot of luck we raze Hurrian for like a 100 of gold.

In 1694 we discover Printing Press and our income goes up! :goodjob: Furthermore Ghandi offers spices against our sugar and I agree. I put another gem on top and we get additional wines. We need his hapiness a lot more than he can use ours. I decide to go for replaceble parts.

In 1697 I sell our world map for 310 to Caesar. Well that's a lot of money and we've got a tech gap to close what we need money for.

Replaceable Parts can be researched in the next player's turn. The Forbidden Palace comes in in about 15 turns.

I think we may return into the super power leage. But we have to consider two things: We've gotta be great traders and we need a lot of military. After Forbidden Palace more cities, preferably in the flood plains to the north, are most important. More more more of everything.

Now you're up Strauss!

Nice job Pvblivs, however:

3) We will not have a State Religion.

Too bad;)

I wondered if we got such a rule and because of this didn't switch ... puuuh. Too lazy to look into the rules. Bad guy me. So we should go for Free Religion ASAP. I just see that this is also a variant rule. You thought of everything, didn't you? :)

Then we can spread some religions. 3 additional happiness per city will serve us well and do us good. The rest can be helped through military presence :hammer:

Yes yes, I'm a genius, I know:king:

(actually the civics are based on Genghis Khan's rule, and he allowed his subjects to practice their own religions as long as they obeyed him;) )

So spreading religion is ok, as long as we have no state religion?

That is correct.

Now for the report:

Not a very eventful, although interesting turnset.

In 1706 Gandhi landed on our continent and settled Indus in 1709. In the same year our Caravel reaches Indian and Persian borders. Since there was kind of a 'mix' between Persian and Indian cities along the explored coast, I'm guessing their homelands are more to the north or east (where another caravel is heading).

In 1730 Replaceable Parts came in and some workers are already building the first lumbermills (it won't be a big project, there are surprisingly few forests in Mongolia). I set research towards Education, no beakers invested yet. Our economy is recovering a bit, hopefully Forbidden Palace will bring us back into the race. Rome, Persia and India all have Riflemen and Emancipation already so we're probably still very far behind. The good thing is we have the highest production potential of all remaining civs (lots of mines in the homeland, and lots of land to settle still).

Something went wrong with the screenshots, I'll take them again and edit the post in a few minutes.

EDIT:

And Pvblivs, congrats on Germany's progress to the semi-finals!:goodjob:

Roster:
1) Strauss --> just played
2) Ralph_Jackson --> UP! if you have returned....
3) Pvblivs --> NOT on deck!
4) blastoidstalker --> where art thou?/on deck
5) Kanga_DU

Thanks. The game was really ummm ... exiting!

India on our continent ... that's bad news. They will for sure now have a race for land with us. And that's no good. Forbidden Palace will reduce our costs significantly so please, prepare settlers. We need them. At least 4 or 5 for good city sites we would not want to miss. Will we? :)

I should indeed have started preparing some Settlers during my turnset, however for some reason I completely forgot. I blame the heat again!
