Lost my way, got it for tonight

Christianity in York and the missionary to London

Tweaking the citizens at London and Nottingham got the work finished about the same time but also got the cottages at London worked and a boost to the commerce.

London is an odd sort of capitol as its only hammers come from trees. So I have a modest proposal. Let's turn London into a commercial and or science town. It will easily support two specialists of whatever kind we like as well. So when Literature comes in spit out a worker then start on the Great Library and get to jacking that lumber on the eastern grasslands for the bookshelves and paper.

The only hitch in that plan is this announcement:

50_000.jpg

Unless I am mistaken in the distribution of Great Artists this tells me somebody out there has learned Music already so they have already hit Literature. So we need to get that marble hooked in post haste.

York should switch to a lighthouse and then the Great Lighthouse if we want the Big Lightbulb. Chop down the hill trees to the east but I think leave the rest of the forests. Or York could stay on the Colussus.

Nottingham is clearly the Military Production town while York and London work on their Wonders. And it should follow up its settler with a worker to support the marble quarry and London's Great Library.

Somewhere in all of this we need to find production cycles for a galley and a couple of missionaries :mischief:

We can afford to whip in the settler in 65AD but I don't think it's worth it. And I boobed the worker turns down there because I forgot the Copper bonus to the Colussus so I had to go back to the mine for its road.

We will have Literature in London about the same time it finishes the library.

No pictures this time as there really wasn't anything worth a picture...

Good builder set of turns. Basically stayed on Bede's plan.

Turn 3 (95AD) - Settler in York, start missionary to give York a chance to grow a little.

Turn 4 (110AD) - Library in London, start worker.

Turn 5 (125AD) - Literature comes in, start Compass (back on the Optics path). Built Hastings in the agreed Marble city spot.

Turn 7 (155AD) - Had to drop research to 80%.

Turn 10 (200AD) - The forest we just chopped in York grew back. :D

Keep chopping and working to get the marble hooked up. With one more chop, the Colossus should finish in about 3 or 4 turns so I would finish it out. Then work on the lighthouse/GL. Start Great Library in London as soon as the worker finishes and chop like mad!

Save is attached.

Something to keep in mind at this stage of the game is that not putting any improvement on a field leaves a pretty good chance of a forest growing back pretty quickly. Any improvement however includes a road as I understand it.

Nice work so far. let's hope the gods are with us.

Looking good guys. I'll be returning Friday, so is it ok if I grab the save that's up at that time?

T0: In perhaps my most important decision of the turns, I decide to delete the sign obstructing the streets of Hastings ("Right here then")

Essential resource! And marvel upon the unobstructed streets!

T2: Start the G.Library in London. Whip the Colossus in at Nottingham for 3 pop (and saving 5 turns) - two foods mean this will regrow like a weed.
T3: Swap Hastings to a workboat - for crabs, once growing whip the granary in. I don't think we can spare workers down here for a while for anything other than the marble. Start lighthouse @ Nottingham.

Then work on the lighthouse/GL
I notice the GL is not available to build. The event log says built in 280BC. Oh well.
T7: Beat the barb off our east border. A forest conviently grew to move the warrior into right beside the barb. :p Taoism - FIDL

T8: Notice I've forgotten to whip the library in at York. Insert a forge for whipping into queue to deal with the unhappies.
T10: Whip forge @ York. Marble quarried, road 2 turns off.

And a save:

I meant to include that we have a spare confucian missionary that York built (asleep @ London), however that religion is fully spread. IIRC I set Nottingham to build a christian monastary so we can work some happy magic.

Looks like time for another turn before Strauss gets back. :mischief:

Got it.

Don't know how I missed the Lightbulb announcement! Ouch.

Could be a Philosophical civ which built The Parthenon, or even just The Parthenon on its own. TP is usually built fairly late by the AI, so I would think it's a Philo leader who completed it.

Btw, I just caught that note about the sign up from page two while searching for a completion date on TP. Shame I caught it so late, as I think Strauss is coming back soon. :wallbash:

First ninety years were uneventful, though I should have been thinking rather than quarrying marble.

Yosk finished its Monastery and started a galley. The loose missionary was moved over to visit and await his transport to new and distant lands.

As soon as Compass came in switched the research to Mathematics for the 50% boost to the forestry operations. Then I put London on short rations.

Unforutnately it was a little too late. First came this little notice telling me that at least one other nation out there had marble (440AD)

That was just before learning how to measure the wood for the shelves (440AD)

And then in 445AD

but we land two consolation prizes in 470AD

Coin to pay for the rush to Optics (Machinery first)

and the Confucian shrine.

Trying to squeeze the hammers out of London for the Great Library was my big mistake. And my second error was not switching the research path to Maths for the hammer bonus.

But all in all we are not in bad shape. We did not stifle our expansion to cover all the useful areas in favor of the Wonders and we have a nice commerce base with the Colussus. And the Oracle and the Henge mean that we will get the next Great Prophets we need in good time for another shrine and the lighbulbing of some useful tech (Paper might be really handy given the map and our objectives here) The Colussus alone is worth far more than the two scientists from the library. It just means we delay learning Astronomy for a bit, until we can figure out where we want to carry the flag. And if we get out there exploring we may find we can do lot of that with galleys and caravels.

That would explain why I couldn't find any referrence to The Parthenon being built anywhere earlier in the thread.

So, Music was discovered...

Nice quiet and quick set then, mostly worker moves and a few builds:

Not focusing on troop production I see...

T1: Whipped Temple in @ London
T6: New Lands!

T10: Nottingham grows into unhappiness, missed that happening. 1 turn on Library left, so I insert a temple for whipping next turn.

More detail on our north:

Good job men. I'm back now, so I'll play in a few hours.

@ Nares: If you still want to join the team, that's very much ok;) .

Turn 1 (665 AD): Whip Temple in Nottingham.

Turn 2 (680 AD): Machinery comes in, start on Optics (12 turns).

695-800 AD:
:coffee:

I found a barbarian city on the east coast of the island, guarded by 3 Archers with at least 1 more patrolling on the island.
Optics is due in 3 turns (we shaved off a turn when London grew).
I've started on a Settler in York to settle in the north-east of our island. I think we should fill up our own island first before going to another. We will also need to build up some military before going overseas.

(I've decided to switch from Imageshack to Photobucket to get pictures shown in full size)

EDIT: didn't work out as I hoped, and images are now too screwed up to properly resize. Guess the first step was a doozy.

I'm not really sure if sailing around the northern island was a good idea, since I think I could have sailed to another island to the north. I only found this out at the end of the turnset, guess I'm still a bit rusty;). If someone confirms that I'm right, I think we should sail back. There might be another civ out there, and we need to trade us some techs! In any case, once Optics comes in, we need to send out Caravels. Nottingham is probably the best city to do this.
