Struggling with Amenities in Civilization VI

I can't think of the name of the city state at the top of my head, but there is one that will give you 'Toys'. Which is a unique luxury only available from that city state.
Yes, some luck is needed in whether you get the CS in your game and if you are close to it.

Toys is a great merchant thing.

Zanzibar gives 2 luxuries though.

Not a CS, a Great Merchant

By 'mid game' (depending on how bad your culture is), Zoos start giving overlapping +1 amenities to all cities in 6 hex range (or 9 if you are the Suz of Toronto).

As I recall, Toronto's range extending bonus only applies to Industrial Zones.

Toronto suzerain bonus:

Regional effects from your Industrial Zone and Entertainment Complex districts reach 3 tiles farther.

Having negative Amenities isn't THAT bad, though. You can get by quite a while unless you drop too low. So don't worry too much. :)

I've read somewhere that having negative amenities will spawn barbarians near your cities, like rebels. No wonder I'm still struggling with them even at midgame. My capital has -1 amenities.

I was experimenting with a single city in one of my games, and I got really low on amenities. I was at -6 or -7, and I spawned 2 barbarian horseman on two separate occasions.

I thought this too... could have sworn that was the case
Got caught by that too! And I was all worried of keeping at least 4 luxuries to myself to keep 16 cities happy! That explains why the other leaders are so eager to make deals on them...
I guess the game does a crappy job at explainig how this works.. I mean, there's no indication of what resources goes where!

Toys are given by Great Merchant John Spilsbury, not by some city state.

The only City State that gives you amenities is Zanzibar (Suzerain bonus: cinnamon and cloves unique luxury resources, +6 amenities each).

Agreed it is very badly communicated. Especially as there are a number of old and new threads/posts that say that multiple couples gives an additional 4 amenities. There is no reason why stuff like this needs to be so confusing. Overall the game communicates information quiet well but this really needs to be made more clear in-game.

No the game does not communicate information well, it communicates some information well, most of it (including how the game actually works) is only uncovered by modders looking at XML tables.

Candidly, I think this item is pretty clear in game, but so many people internalized the (incorrect, as it turns out) community conclusion that multiple luxuries could provide extra amenities that it took on a life of its own, getting repeated in post-launch threads, requiring frequent corrections. I hope the confusion on this specific issue dies down pretty quickly, but we may have to keep playing "whack-a-mole" for a while.

.... lack of housing, maybe? Still have barbs close to my borders. Or maybe it's just a bug that needs to be fixed.
I think barbs will spawn everywhere outside of vision, and it seems they spawn more often as time goes on (although there is less area for them to spawn in as time goes on)

Why on earth can't I decide which city benefits from those luxuries? Firaxis, civilization is a game where people enjoy to manage their empire. Maybe I am too old school

Because part of the penalty for an unhappy city is that it takes luxury amenities from your happy cities.

You get to manage which cities get the Other amenities...ones from entertainment districts, policies and governments.

I know, I know. But I would prefer to assign those luxuries myself. if people want that automated, fine. But there has to be an option for people who prefer to MM that. We already don't build even roads....well, besides that crazy military engineer that can build two road pieces lol

Which is exactly what I said. 10/10 for nitpicking.
