So sometimes things just work out great. I have a capital producing everything, a GP taking off and 1-2 production cities as well as 1-2 commerce cities. At other times, I just can't get ahead in the tech race and I just seem to have slow progress.

Can anyone look at this save game and give me a few hints? I think it's a great location to start and plenty of space to expand. But still I seem to make some basic mistakes.

From a quick glance at your empire I can say that you need to learn the first rule of Civ 4, that is 'Food is King'. Its 1440 AD and you are still not using pigs, corn, fish and clam! This is lot of food, enough to feed 4 cities. The area with pigs, forests and riverside is awsome, that spot should have been claimed long ago. On the other hand, Yroslavl was settled in the wrong place. Forge and Heroic Epic are out of place too, you want such buildings in a strong city, particularly HE.

Couldn't open save. Lacking privilege rights? Not had that come up before on here.

Thanks!

Play BTS

One of the first issues newer players deal with is not understanding the importance of the early game. There's a lot to learn here. Get BTS and install BUG/BULL in custom assets. Run a shadow game here for advice from the very beginning and you will start to see results quickly.

Oh why would you not be playing Beyond the Sword. The Complete edition has been out for 10 years. Not sure how many people play the original games. This also explains my issue as I am still running the cd version. I never bought the game off steam. Doesn't appear to be currently on sale. Not sure which country you are based in.
