Update 1 - 1816
Not What You Expect
Richard Trevithick and George Stephenson of the Netherlands begin research into the new technology of Railroads. The two men working together, with sufficient government funding, have achieved miraculous advances over the last year, however research has slowed towards the end of the year, and critics have voiced concerns that the governments money may be better spent elsewhere. This criticism however is overshadowed by governments efforts to consolidate food supplies and small distributions to the poor and needy, which has noticeable increased the popularity of the government.
The Swedish government has begun to use tax money to sponsor a national library system. The program met resentment from a large conservative Aristocracy, who refuse to pay taxes if they are going to be spent on helping the poor. The increase in the army is welcomed by them on the other hand and eventually the liberal and conservative groups manage to reach a compromise.
The Papal States, an entity that has not played any serious political role in Europe for the last half a century has made a move that left even the most brilliant European diplomats in shock and disbelief. The Papal armies have landed in North Africa and opened a general assault on Beylik. Due to shortage of ships, even after conscriptions of civilian ships, the armies took a long time to travel and did not advance far, but in the first battles the superiority of the Papal armies was obvious. In Istanbul however the head Muslim clerics have called this a New Crusade and called upon Muslims form all over North Africa to help their brethren.
The Great Russian Bear lies quietly in the far East. Cautious government begins slow reforms, which will take a long time to come into effect. Military is reordered, and a large military detachment is marched into Poland as a warning to the semi-autonomous region of Russia and a reminder that while in name Poland is semi-autonomous the decisions are made in St. Petersburg and not in Warsaw.
As the war begins in North Africa, the Naples government stays out. Instead of concentrating on a war and supporting the Pope in North Africa the government has chosen a path of peace, diplomacy and commerce, however the profits of that path take a lot longer to come in that a direct invasion, and there are always Hawks in the government willing to help a friend if it means attacking an enemy.
In the Russian Empire, Poland becomes more and more of a problem every day. The Grand Duke of Poland begun open reforms to create an Independent Polish Army. Russian officers in the Polish Army are being dismissed and Polish once put in their place. Due to this loss and an influx of untrained officers the quality of the army decreases dramatically and it is estimated to be even weaker than before, but these signs of liberalism cannot be tolerated much longer in St. Petersburg.
France is anything but quite in the year following Napoleons defeat. The French army, dismantled just a year ago, has been brought back to life. Conscription, by the Napoleonic standards, has been implemented again. Soldiers are being drilled every day and the nation appears to be in preparation for war. In the North especially this coincided with a massive government attempt to rebuild industry, but since women are staying home and men are going into the army the industrialization project moves along at a slower pace than desired.
Austria is just as France, anything but quite. The government has begun to aggressively implement the long-talk about reforms of converting the population to German. The only language spoken in school and in government is now German, minimum wage for German-speakers is higher than for others, and the army accepts only people who speak German now, decreasing the number of new recruits. As a result the freedom-loving and traditional Magyar population of Hungary is in revolt and the Slavic population of the Balkans is up in arms. It has not come to fighting yet, but most local administrations in these areas refused to implement reforms and armed the locals in preparation to the usual Austrian response to revolt use of force.
And the Austrian Neighbor Piedmont is calm. Slow and steady army and educational reforms slowly take place, but France on one side and Austria on the other appear to be very menacing neighbors.
Ottoman Empire, under careful guidance of the new Sultan, is moving slowly into the new industrial age. Careful planning and government initiatives give good, safe results, and new factories begin to appear in the nation, but some critics say that a more drastic approach is necessary if the Empire is to catch up to its Western Neighbors.
A note, the armies and navies shown are the once in Europe (including African and Asian parts shown on the map), Russia has more in Asia, UK has more in the colonies, etc. so do not worry about those unless you want to send some to the colonies with the purpose of expanding them, which would give you economic bonuses (and IF we go to a world map eventually more colonies)
