Succession game for RFC RAND?

Workers are much more expensive in RAND than settlers or troops.
I would have kept all our troops in Paris until I see some troops showing up near Marseilles. (There's already a road connecting Paris to Marseilles so you can get there in 1-2 moves).

Quotey, you're up.

Turn 0 (215)

Blah.

Turn 1 (216)

Blah.

Turn 2 (217)

Blahet- no, wait, Vikings complete the Collosus. Well, means they haven't been building troops :D

I also scope out the defences of Lisboa. Good christ almighty high in heaven.

Turn 4 (219)

Philosophy completes. I've never had Edu and Civil Service available at the same time. Eh. Theology you old card.

So Optics or Education next... ag....

Optics. Optics. Then maybe Gunpowder to get cannons on the conquerors...

Arabia makes peace with Rome.

Turn 5 (220)

I notice India did quite well starting position wise, which is rare. Maybe cold really does do good?

Turn 6 (221)

Rome found another city that blocks the city Maax wanted, unfortunately.. Rome ar also doing very well this game. Turkey spawns and I don't swithc. Pah, whoo needs Turkey for domination.

Also, Notre Dame is built in a far away land. Persia, I assume. They did good too, though annexing Egypt is probably normal.

Rome is unstable? Hmmm?

Turn 7 (222)

A Prtuguese Trireme sinks our beautiful Galley. Alas, Alas, all is lost.

Turn 8 (223)

Vikes convert to Christianity.

Turn 9 (224)

Vikes want us to cancel deals with Germany. Nah.

Borders of Marseille expand in the weirdest possible way giving us view into Lisboa.

Turn 10 (225)

Germany makes peace with Vikes.

Still no peace with Portugal? Well by now troops will stop deserting anyway, we're well past 8 turns after their spawn. I just hop we didn't lose too many workers.

Rome has been getting their asses kicked by Arabia I think, so its no surprise they're moving to unstable.

With Turkey spawned, there will be no more civs Spawning, we should consider finding a good city spot in S. Africa, and otherwise focus on spawning conquerors in the Americas.

So I waged further war against Portugal, which has been literally a plague on the world.

0. 1350 Rome is about to collapse, so I trade furiously with them. Get Engineering for compass (which they were about to learn anyway) and philosophy+ our world map. I sell our world map for about 250 g.

1. 1350 Paris builds more troops while Lyon builds settler (it's unhappy and unhealthy).

2. 1360 Portugal moves a sizeable stack (3 pikemen, 3 crossbows, 1 longbow and 1 axeman) towards Marseilles.

3. 1370 Germany demands paper--uh, no. We have optics, switch to gunpowder.

4. 1380 Plague strikes Lisboa! Too bad they only have 1 city because we're going to be hit hard. We destroy their stack with the sacrifice of 2 catapults.
They're willing to sue for peace, but we need to wipe them off the face of the earth.

5. 1390 Sure enough, plague strikes Marseilles. Rome collapses.

6. 1400 Plague strikes Paris. :(

7. 1405 Plague hits Berlin. I used our spy to steal banking (still not enough for civil service) because...

8. 1410 Plague strikes Stockholm (which would have killed our spy) and Nidaros. Portugal moves 3 more troops towards Marseilles.

9. 1415 Our first caravel goes west and meets England, OB to spread our plague hopefully. I build Bordeaux south of Lisboa to hem the Portuguese in (and there's marble in sight for our future wonders). I debated whether to make it an inland city to encompass the horse slightly east, but I figure we can always build another city.

10. 1420 We're the first to be done with the plague (I whipped some aqueducts in Marseilles and Orleans). Islam spreads to Bordeaux (damn, no AP hammers). Li Po (GA) is born in Paris, I don't know what to do with him--maybe send him eastward to flip some former Roman cities?

Future directions:
1. Research civil service ourselves
2. Circumnavigate (and don't sell any more maps until afterwards)
3. Build one more city east so we can flip some Roman cities. I think the whole of Africa is ours.
4. Kill Portugal (need about 9 troops, we already have several promoted catapults and 1 trebuchet ready). A spy to destroy their copper would be nice.

Looking good to me.

I know we're planning to use a GA to flip some of those Roman cities, but personally I'd find something slightly further away than where you have arrowed. Maybe a little bit South? It doesn't take much culture to flip an independent, and remember, we want maximum territory with as few cities as possible.

Another option for the Artist is to use it (and maybe one or two others that we might spawn) to eat up a load of otherwise crappy African terrain.

Actually that arrow wasn't put in by me but I didn't know how to remove it. It was a little too close to Tarentum. I agree that we can probably build a city a little southeast of that spot and bomb it with our GA.
Paris needed a little bit more space but as long as we collapse the Vikings and redistribute some tiles we should be OK. I didn't see the point of Birka which is just mountains to the north and eats into Lyon's living space. (Since we're playing domination every city should count).

I think bombing the GA in Africa is a good idea. Just find somehwere with lots of land tiles and hit it.

If we want quick cities from Rome, I think there is a good spot to drop the artist near the coast towards the SE. There's some resources and grasslands to make a large city.

Looking good dudes. Whos next?

Oh right, MAM is out of town, looks like its me. You can delete that sign from the strategy layer.

Here we go:

Turn 0: 1420 Uneventful.
Turn 1: 1425 Our caravel spots the Maya land and we get invaders. Tikal is split off from the rest of their area by Jungle, so I donate most of our troops, and open borders. Vassalization by capitulation is not an option, so we'll have to butter them up to make them do it willingly. One of our knights spies an Incan scout, and we get invaders to them. This time I declare war in an effort to get capitulation.
Turn 2: 1430 Finish gunpowder. Start civil service. Drop research to 60% to keep a positive cash flow.
Turn 3: 1435 I start an amphitheater in Lyons. Not sure if we should focus on something else for this one, but happiness is going to help our stability, which is likely going to start taking a hit soon. Indias lose Mumbai to the natives.
Turn 4: 1440 Start ampitheater in Orleans. Move our artillery and some troops into Portugeuse lands to start bombardment.
Turn 5: 1445 Start bombardment on Lisboa. No casualties on our side yet. Settle a general in Paris.
Turn 6: 1450 Germany finishes the Leaning Tower. Start courthouse in Paris. Take Lisboa. Start courthouse in Lisboa.
Turn 7: 1455 Maya offers themselves up as vassals. We accept naturally. Buy Maya's map for 30 gold, trade theology + 35 gold for civil service from Maya. Start worker in Marseilles. Viking revolt occurs in Birka. Set research to education.
Turn 8: 1460 Looks like the Incas lost a city to barbarians or natives. They have only 3 left in their capitol, so they should capitulate after we take out 2 of those. This map lacks a NW passage, and I still haven't found the Aztec after exploring the east coast of N. America.
Turn 9: 1465 Whip library in Birka.
Turn 10: 1470 Inca collapse :( . If Aztec are around in this game, we'll want them as vassals. Otherwise we can try for the Americans when they spawn. Start bank in Lyons.

On Portugal: They were wimps against our cannon. Very good prep work all around.
On declaring war on Inca: I like to get capitulation out of the Amerindians and have a high success rate at doing this, as opposed to waiting for them to willingly vassalize. Plus it guarantees they don't go to someone else. We still have the Maya who are very close, and we don't really need a second vassal in S. America. If we can get Aztec or America for N. America, that would be ideal. Besides, it looked like the Incas were about to be overrun by barbs/natives soon anyways. Their military was mostly melee units.

Our troop surplus: We could focus on happiness or try to take some more Viking lands.

Future directions: Beeline for Liberalism. Don't trade the techs leading to it.
Probably donate some techs to the Maya, and once we take the remnants of the Incan lands, give those cities to the Maya.
Settle a city near those roman ones with Paris's settler, and settle the GA there. I sent a worker to stat building a road in that direction. I'm thinking on the grassland in between those 3 resources.
We have lots of time to circumnavigate, so use the caravel in the south to look for Aztecs and then Asian civilizations. Use the one in the North to finish the circumnavigation.

Maax is next?

Nice set of moves kbk.
I usually try to finish gunpowder before finding the American civs to get cannon and musketmen, but it's not crucial.
Remember this is only a large map, so just like Spain was missing, Aztecs are probably nonexistent.
I think Germany's getting antsy (we refused them paper before). I vote for taking a break from war (but keep our border cities with Germany and Vikings well fortified), and build our cities in America and SE of Orleans. For America I would start with a city right in the middle and fan out (to avoid the Americans later who usually start on a coast).
Direct Maya for military science or military tradition after giving/trading them some techs.

Thanks AP. I accidentally stumbled upon both the Maya and Inca on the same turn (1 before gunpowder). It turned out it didn't matter for Maya, but it might have let us take the Inca out, or force capitulation. I did consider a reload, but decided against it.

I kind of think you're right that we won't see any Aztecs after looking at the Mayas map.

I'm all for working for a pacifist direction. We need 30% land area with the civs that are a live now, so we really can't afford to take any civs out right now.

We should go for liberalism, and pop astronomy as our free tech. We can wait to settle much of Africa or N. America until we have resettlement (My wars dropped us to Shaky). But it wouldn't hurt to build up some settlers ahead of time.

It's getting kinda late (1470 and no astronomy yet), so just be aware we may need to build those settlements in NAm rather quickly to block off good land for the Americans.

The Vikings will never amount to much, and they're close enough for us to steal stuff from (we still don't have aesthetics do we?). I'm a little concerned about Germany's intents in the north, and we should take up some of the former Roman cities quickly before Arabia and Germany beats us to them.

Our civics right now are not very good. We don't have a state religion which means we're paying premium for OR without the building benefit, and vassalage is so expensive. Since we have gold, I think we should take a few turns researching aesthetics and build Shwedagon Paya, and then switch to free religion and bureaucracy.

Also, instead of building another settler, why don't we conquer Tarentum with our expert troosp and get it out of revolt by bombing it with our great artist. It might be closer to some of the other Roman cities that we can flip.

Maax you're next.

Kill, rape and pillage before others do this, get to amercia take some useless tech and build crap so we will be less crappy. Okay.

Nice turns. I think when we're stable enough we should liberate some SAm cities to Maya (aka Naked Boy) due to their high maintenance cost for us and the fact we need to found (not control) 7 New World cities ourselves.

I would have denied Maya Feudalism because some Eastern civs may not have it (when I meet them be sure to sell it to them before Maya does). But they do need some protection against the dogs, so it's OK.

Quotey, you're next. I know you hate exploration, but really you should sell/trade our map more than once for some money. Do it at least once when you meet the Eastern civs.
