Since my GF is at the semi annual office party this evening, and I'm not allowed to go, I find myself all alone in my big ol' house.

< Sigh />

What's a girl to do? Why, play Civ, of course! :D

I had the worst game ever!!! All thanks to the RNG. (Booo!!)

I was playing random civ and random personalities on a continents map. I drew Washington of the Americas. On my continent were Izzy and Mansa. I wiped out Mansa right away and then built things up a little and went after Izzy. When I started, she only had three cities, one of which I promptly razed. I sent my axemen and chariots further in to her territory to take out Madrid and Barcelona. Nope. my stack of ten units didn't make it more than a couple of plots in. I regrouped and sued for peace since those were the bulk of my forces at the time. I quickly researched Horseback Riding and Ironworking and began to whip horsemen and swordsmen, and made a few nice stacks. By this time, Izzy had around seven cities, most of them poorly defended. I razed two more of them, and sent the bulk of my forces into her territory. It was like she had land mines. I started losing units left and right. I was getting slaughtered, and not only that, I was losing horsemen and swordsmen to archers that weren't even on hills. They were out in the open in the plains.

I kept whipping and building, whipping and building, trying to keep up with my losses. I tried for peace four times, but she would have none of it. I sent in almost everything I had and lost every.bloody.unit. Izzy had minimal losses. I gave up counting my lost units at 77. I was finally able to get a peace treaty, but by the time I had an army again, Izzy had a monstrous tech lead (and longbows).

I threw in the towel and gave up in disgust.

So let me ask... How many of you have had a game where you've been drubbed that badly by the RNG? Not just a loss or two, but a really good mangling. Let's not turn this into a "Civ cheats" thread, just please recount a tale of when you've been handed your knickers on a plate by the RNG.

Maybe we can find some humor in our shared misery. ;)

Something's missing here, str6 units don't lose against archers on plains ;)
At least not more than 1x per game with 99% odds :D

But mixing swords with HAs..bad plan, am sure that's not what you want to read thou ;)
I had such games, take this city or fail your war..and then you lose like 4 70% or better battles in a row, and it's over. They can be more fun thou than winning easy, sure i could scream at first but minutes later i just laugh about that and maybe start a new one.

I guess we have all been in situations where we lost 98% + Odds battles. I don't mind losing those as history is littered with battles one-sided on paper but with completely unexpected outcomes. But losing three straight battles at 98% odds with one of those losses being my Great General Super Medic unit? That sucks!

The GG healer started life as a Woodsman II Impi who later went on to become Woodsman III + Medic III. He died at a time when I could no longer build Impis anymore. Needless to say I immediately closed the game and went for a little walk.

HRW mod/Huge Earth/Max Civs/RB on/MON/Epic playing Russia as Peter ( PHI/EXP before mod update)

Was doing great, had basic BFC going strong, 2nd in tech, 1st in prod, good army. Placed additional city south to control the Caspian. Get that up and barely going when alert pops stating that Eng and France are at war. No biggy says I, it's western euro, happens all the time. Set up additional city to control the Black Sea, vassal Poland, Turkey and Greece. During that France had fallen, Spain was under attack, and Rome was paranoid about England ( led by that fat bearded ego maniac Henry the VIII). Quick chk of the Power score shows me in the lead and Rome and Germany slighty weaker than England. No problem says I, I'll be best buds with those two, and well stall Fat Boys advance long enough for some TT to get us to the point to where all of us can sign def packs.... Minor problem. I completely forgot that England is an ocean civ and loves amphib ops ( note to self, I've played England, DUH idiot!). His Royal Beardness takes out Rags real fast, then pops a GA ( WTH? where the hell did that come from?) in conquered city, culture flips Willy, and starts staging Reds and Cans.
A quick OB and a "yes MR. Snitzel I'll help" later, and We're going at it.... Major problem now, Rome got ghosted and we got baddies coming in from the west as well as a naval war going on in the Med.. No prob says I, I got HE and enough GP for a GA, so a civic change was in order.
Stupid alert now ensues. I completely forgot to check the diplo screen for any alliances. Long story short, Babylon from the east, Egypt from the south, and there was no way I could sue for peace..... I REALLY hate that fat <insert profanity of choice>.
Needless to say, I double check everything before going to war. And if Fat Boy is in the game, I triple check.

BTW, nice avatar change Lemon.

I have the memory of a malnourished parakeet, so I rarely remember these types of stories, but all I can say is that I certainly have encountered ridiculous losses in my time. Generally now I'm good about minimizing unless I'm doing HOF games in which I often take larger risks early game, but that is what is all about.

I have to say though that combining swords and HAs is not the best approach.

Not being allowed to her office party! Let me at 'em! Let me at 'em! :spank::aargh::ar15:

I will quote myself, hope it will make you feel better :)

I had it several times since we talk.

Guess, why this one is worth of posting here?

:rotfl:

I had sound off, right clicked that barb warrior and did not even noticed what happened. Spent like 30 sec on the next turn trying to realize, where did my axe go?

Now you know why I rage quit.

True, but they were the strongest units I had. I also had stacks of axemen that enjoyed suiciding on everything.

She's not out at work, and I would absolutely cause trouble. :mischief:

Thanks. I got bored with plain old me and went for someone quirky looking this time. :crazyeye:

@Gkey: :run::ar15: Oww!

Thanks for the stories everyone. Keep them coming! :D

@drakarska That story was pretty amusing and made me chuckle to myself.

I got a short story,
I was Isabella of Spain and settled on a large piece of land with many cities. I had more cities than the AIs and as I check world map I looked big. So then I started to conquer the neighbor, Hatsheput of Egypt and I took about 4 cities. Roosevelt was protector of Aztec and then became protector of Egypt too. So by this time, the war had caused me to stay in the medieval age for some reason because I still had cavalry and conquistadors which I used to take 4 of Hatsheput's cities. I defied Apostolic Palace resolutions and many issues started to pop out to keep it short.

My stories like this always seem to involve my well fortified and decently promoted archer unit, a barb warrior, and a burning town. I mean c'mon, you are holed up in buildings and on rooftops, shooting arrows, they have sticks. How the heck did you LOSE?! I think some archer units are secret anarchists and just hand the town over to the barbarians to join in on some fun and frolic.

So I was playing as Catherine of Russia, on Noble.

Early game goes well, took most of Saladin's cities, then vassaled him. Didn't try to expand much after that, I was smack in the center of the continent with the best land and Charley kept warring with me.I discover the other continent, and Mansa Musa has a big score and tech lead. By this time I had focused on improving my economy and science output, and decided to go for a space race victory (fitting for Russia).

But Mansa Musa was a threat that had to be brought down to size. Russian spies stole valuable techs from Mansa Musa, and I prepared a naval surprise attack. I razed three mid-sized coastal cities, and Mansa Musa agreed to peace.By this time mine and Mansa Musa's scores were roughly equal and I was on my way to an easy space victory with a comfortable tech lead. Thanks to the truly standout Russian UB, I had my spaceship ready to launch with only one other civ having completed the Apollo Program. In 1994 my spacecraft is launched, and in 10 years the Russian people will be the first visitors to a new world. I lazily wait for victory, declaring war on the other continent for the hell of it. The year is 2002, I don't even bother giving any orders to my units before ending the turn.

2003: Mansa Musa has won a cultural victory! Are you kidding me... Cheesed from space victory BY A SINGLE TURN!!!!! And the worst part is I could have easily stopped it. Like an idiot, I didn't bother checking the victory screen, and I paid no mind to Mansa Musa's unusually low tech rate.

Mine is always stack attacks. Especially after softening up a stack with cannons and then releasing the hounds. Every enemy unit is down to max col damage or worse. Then I stack attack and I'll win every combat except one. My GG. I know it's selective memory but when you attack with 20 units all over 98% and the only one you lose is your GG, it get's annoying.

Was enjoying knocking the snot out of Monty, when he vassaled to Churchill. Being an American I really feel uncomfortable fighting Churchill, so I tried to make peace. He was very annoyed with me, imagine a Brit being upset with a Viking. I mean cmon. Anyway, he wouldn't take gold and was demanding one of the Hatty's cities I had taken long ago. Built up forces in the two surrounding cites and gave in to his demands. 10 turns later the city revolted back to me. Winston still Annoyed but at least not attacking me now!

I seem to remember someone posting about incredibly bad luck with the barbs recently, that was a funny RNG story . . .

Do you remember the tank v. spearman story?

Well I lost tank versus warrior, 99,9%... and still lost.

And it was not an AI.

These things happen. I lost many riflemen to cossacks where riflemen were supposed to counter cavalry and cossacks.

My badly depleted stack is closing in on the last HRE city. Out pops a rifleman and kills one of my crew. The edgy business looks even edgier now, but I think I still have enough firepower. Plus the mangled rifleman is standing in the way, so I can pick one of my riflemen out of the stack who only needs one XP to promote before the final battle. At 97% against the badly wounded opponent what could go wrong?

He lost.

My haxmaster Darius game still has one of the most flagrant examples of RNG screw ever. Lost a city defended by 2 archers to 2 barb archers and a warrior IIRC. Something like that.
