Suggest a good RPG?

You have to really have time and want to go into the story ellse it's kinda lame with long loading times and as I said, very detailed but zooooomed in graphics and huge dialouges.

I never could be bothered.

To, to, to much text and to zoomed in graphics.

Graphics are irrelevant, and if you want the greatest story in the history of gaming, then you have to put up with text :p

But if not PS:T, then any of the other old Black Isle/Bioware games: Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Fallout (plus their sequels). Still way better than any more recent RPGs.

Broken Sword series of game where quite cool and fun to play not sure if they come under RPG or Adventure games though

Baldur's Gate 1/2
Icewind Dale
Planescape: Torment
Neverwinter Nights Platinum
Neverwinter Nights 2

the covers the DnD based RPGs, and nothing else is really close to them, IMO.

I'm not sure if I can get my head around someone both suggesting a game as a good Diablo clone and saying he doesn't play Diablo and doesn't want to.

Diablo II is a great game and I have spent at least 1000 hours on it. Maybe even 2000+ hours (which I guess explains why I'm so bad at Civ4). But if you slip it in a "good RPG" thread things can get messy. I guess the people on this forums are much cleaner and politer than some others.

The very best RPG ever is, in fact, Planescape: Torment. But since the topic creator did mention he prefers newer games and, Torment, for its time, is extra texty (probably the last game this texty to be shelved?), I'm guessing Torment is not for him.

It is with this lesson that the gaming industry learned that the vast majority of the gaming population cannot read. If they could read, what they'd pick up would have been a book instead of a video game. This is also why game manuals get becoming smaller. People who can read enough to appreciate Torment and will play enough computer game to pick it up definitely are of the rarer species. So it doesn't matter how great the game is, this much text just won't sell.

(Obviously, I should try to stay on topic myself but I struggle, in the last 10 years I have been
-branching out to PS2, GC and NDS
-regurgitating old favorites
-playing Diablo II and then World of WarCraft)
So if you had asked for a recommendation on PS2 I got a few.
So I'm going to play safe and recommend Baldur's Gate II.
If it helps, it's with the success of Fallouts the designers won the contract to make Baldur's Gates, and with the success of Baldur's Gate I, went on to make Planescape Torment. All of them are of the same 'Infinity' engine. Baldur's Gate II succeeds Fallout II and Planescape Torment so it has steered away from the major pitfalls (the textiness, the graphic/interface obscurity, more 0-friendly-fire area spells, etc.)

Oh, and Arcanum is also a cousin of 'Infinity' games.

Fallout 1 and 2 don't use the Infinity Engine and Baldur's Gate was developed by Bioware, not by Black Isle

BIS were involved in BG, though I'm not entirely sure of the exact relationship between the companies at that time.

Definetly stay away from Gothic 3, it's just atrocious. The first two games in the series however are excellent.
I'd personally stay away from Sacred, too. The game never really caught my interest in the same way Diablo did, and the Skill system is stupid imo.

Ha!
Community Team just released their final patch to Gothic 3, that has ~800MB in size and more than 700 fixes. Game finally looks and works like intended. Therefore to all Gothic fans I have good news - Gothic 3 FINALLY can be played!

Many thanks to Community Patch Team! :goodjob:

...Torment always rules in book, and I can also recommend another classic - Betrayal At Krondor. Very old, but very good.

Other than that, there's no playable RPGs around as far as I'm concerned. If you look for RPG setting and superb medieval combat style I recommend Mount&Blade though.

I'd love to play some good RPG, unfortunately nowadays games are designed for consoles and children, not ~30 old farts with high expectations

Sadly thats true :(

There's been some reasonably good RPGs more recently, but the last great RPG was Baldur's Gate 2.

Game developers don't see 30 year olds as being finacially viable when producing games that would require a significant time investment. This is more or less because by that stage of their life, they generally have enough other commitments that they simply won't have the time to play through the game, so they won't bother purchasing it.

I understand what you're saying. But it's different now. Old rules are no longer valid.
We have XXI century, overpopulation, and economical breakdown. Nowadays there's so many hunters for one type of prey(one type of audience), that it's more logical to search for a different type of prey/audience.
Therefore, I am certain that if somebody would finally release a game not catering to little kids and their parents, but targeted towards adult audience, it would be a definitive success.
People have their heads buried in the sand, they don't see changes coming.

@Phrox
In any case, Witcher was good, I like Gothic series, but I know what you mean - nothing on a Torment or Fallout scale...
...
Ah! Vampire:The Mascarade - Bloodlines
Awesome game, finished it three times in one month first time I've played it couple years ago :king:

Uhm, don't get me wrong here. I agree that some games are oversimplified for their own good like Oblivion. Also I do enjoy reading and I enjoy stories and I enjoy many games with alot of story elements and text. I loved Fallout, I try to read the stories in different MMORPGs...I even roleplay.

But I belive that some games go over the top.
Look, sitting down and hearing the backstory of a game and how it all happend can be nice. This can be done through text or a film, or perhaps you can find a letter or a book in the game. Heck even meet an old man and buy him a beer.

But when every freakin character tells you half a page worth of monologue then it's annoying. To be frank I think you either have to much time on your hands or want to be as non-conformist as possible by *trying* really hard to enjoy games like these.
Old RPG's used to have alot of text, that's true. But much of the text was about explaining the scenery and things around you because the graphics were worthless.

When some dude wants to keep chatting away for 15 minutes and I'm in the middle of saving myself and the world then I feel like slitting his throat and I don't get why you don't feel the same.

Ah! Vampire:The Mascarade - Bloodlines
Yeah that game was great. One of the best settings there is.
I came quite long and then I formated my comp and lost all the info =(

Oops, I got a little mixed up, maybe with Arcanum.

We each recommended the same game once, you're the one who kept coming back to bash it. So who has more time?

...or want to be as non-conformist as possible by *trying* really hard to enjoy games like these.
What? All 5 of us here?

And what are these other games like these you are referring to that made it plural there?

Well, yeah, somewhat... But if someone loved Baldur's Gate or one of these types of games, playing Planescape Torment is a must. It's probably the best in this genre.

Baldur's Gate 1/2
Icewind Dale
Planescape: Torment
Neverwinter Nights Platinum
Neverwinter Nights 2

the covers the DnD based RPGs, and nothing else is really close to them, IMO.

I'm going to ignore this instruction by about a month, and suggest the greatest RPG ever:

Planescape: Torment

Or the 90% of players who write game reviews?

blarghleblasteroids

Then don't play. If I could FIND a freaking copy of Torment I'd play it. Tons of text is not ym cup of tea either but it sure beats "Go here, kill these dudes, because -cliche here-".
