Switch 2 version confirmed

This is nice to have mouse controls on console.
If they just would make the touch controls work too for handheld.

You have to buy it again for the exact same game with the graphics settings turned up a bit if you just bought it on the Switch?
All Switch 1 games will be compatible with Switch 2. For some of them, you can purchase an upgrade pack to bring up the game to the tech specs of Switch 2 and to leverage on Switch 2’s functionality.

So you don’t have to literally buy the game again.

If I'm not mistaken, Switch is a platform where you have to buy multiplayer access separately from a game. It doesn't surprise me at all that full compatibility there comes with paid upgrade pack.

The multiplayer part is true for every console, with PS having a little leeway with some free-to-play games.

The paid upgrade pack is where it’s a grey area. Both Xbox and PS offered free generational upgrades on some of their games in the past, but the scope of those upgrades were mostly limited to technical improvements. Switch 2’s situation is a bit different: from the upgrades mentioned today, they entail not just performance improvements, but also reimagined controls like with Civ 7 (mouse control), or additional features like with Tears of the Kingdom (“Zelda GPS”).

But yes, historically Nintendo have been very stingy with their prices. There is already some grumbling happening on the webs about Nintendo charging for the upgrades, but IMO it should be assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on what else is included in the upgrade besides graphics.

Not many upgrades from Nintendo cost you money. Many games will have free updates. Some games get more included so those have upgrade prize. Take 2 will get their money with the mouse thing.

Is anyone here playing in Switch?
I have a Switch, but I am also fortunate enough to have a Steam Deck. I played Civ6 on the Switch and found it quite lacking (ended up only enjoying scenarios on it). Civ7 on the Steam Deck, on the other hand, is quite solid as a mobile experience.

Reports so far point to $10-15 upgrades for the "Switch 2 Editions" (some other games are getting free updates, it seems), though that may be specific to Nintendo's 1st party games. 2K and other publishers could handle it differently, or everything could be on a case-to-case basis. The Switch 1 version is $10 cheaper to begin with, so my best guess is $10...optimistically.

Now that there's a date confirmed for Switch 2 the existence of the Switch 1 version baffles me even more. It may have appeared very silly to base Civ 7's launch date around a single console release, but it would have been a fine excuse for a sorely needed delay. Oh well, not the timeline we live in.

It's $10 for games with no additional content, like Metroid Prime 4 or Pokemon Legends Z-A, and $20 for games that have additional content, like Super Mario Party Jamboree.

I would assume VII would be the $10 upgrade since there are no additional content, but that would be up to Fireaxis and Take Two.

You have to do that for PC too. It's called the internet!

In all seriousness, this is true for all consoles, though yes you *also* need internet access so PC is still cheaper.

Not sure how many are aware of this because the Direct was just today, but link is below.

They probably wanted to release a Switch version as well because there might be plenty of people, like me, that aren't ready to upgrade yet to a Switch 2. Not that it applies to the Civ Franchise for me, but it does for Pokémon currently.

Gee, I’m shocked. All anyone had to do is play the PC version to know that it’s a console game.

CIV VI yes and eventually I will get CIV VII for the Switch 2...Hopefully there will be a proper Switch 2 only release with some dlc bundled some time sown the line.

With all the 2k games featured in the Switch 2 Direct I assume they've had the SDK for a long time so the og Switch port was probably developped along the "enhanced" Switch 2 version. No biggie!

likewise. I don‘t see myself upgrading to switch 2 as long as the console is always at full price. I will get one in a year or two, but mostly for Nintendo‘s own games, and not for civ, which I always play on my Mac or via GFN. I have been waiting for a truly new Mario kart for more than 10 years though, so maybe … I won‘t wait two years with the switch upgrade…

I still believe that the switch 2 was planned for an earlier release though (I think speculations were on autumn 2024), and that civ 7 was planned to be released for both switch editions at launch.
