God Forsaken
“Can soldiers and statesmen override the rights of innocent people for the sake of their own political community? They might sacrifice themselves in order to uphold the moral law, but they cannot sacrifice their countrymen. Faced with some ultimate horror, their options exhausted, they will do what they must to save their own people.”
Michael Walzer, Just War Theorist of the First Age.
Memorandum Issued by the Learned Council
The recent administrative social decision implemented by the Fuji Administration has set off much alarm and concern in the greater whole of society, prompting many civilians to ask for formal and public actions to be taken by our Learned Council. To denounce the implementation of government policies deliberately aimed at encouraging childbirth is a warranted action. The citizenry of our Holy Republic are fully justified in expressing their opinions.
Yet it must be acknowledged that the actions of the Fuji Government were undertaken so that our Republic’s shortage of manpower is resolved. Thus, while our Learned Council certainly appreciates the desire of the interested parties in offering constructive criticism to the Fuji Administration, we feel that such criticism would be best received in the House of Delegates and the Resplendent Senate as opposed to our own body. High Chancellor Kaiser Fuji was democratically elected, as were his supporters within the House of Delegates and the Resplendent Senate. As such, we advise their critics to focus on defeating the Administration’s supporters in the elections two years from now rather than spend their time arguing their case in front of Our Learned Council.
While individual members of Our Learned Council might have their personal qualms about the recent actions of the Fuji Administration, let there be no doubt that the Our Learned Council recognizes the right of the Fuji Administration to both bring up legislation and implement them. That is not our sphere of interest.
Our Learned Council shall not be involved with the day to day politicking but shall only be interested in the issues which require our interpretation of our eon long cultural history.
To discourage future interested parties from bombarding Our Learned Council, Our Learned Council shall soon implement high filing registration fees as well as establishing a system through which all appointments to our Learned Council for political reasons shall be carefully vetted for their validity.
Press Release by the Fuji Administration
The Fuji Administration fully stands by the decision of the Honored Learned Council. The venerable and exalted position of the Learned Council in our society shall not be blemished by the day to day activities of government administration and electoral politics.

Journal Entry of Doctor Nathan A. Rosenthal
It has been seven long years since the end of my people.
Walking down the street, I have accepted the realization that the end has come to all I once took for granted. The vast libraries of New Hebron, and the likes of the beautiful temples of Konigsberg are gone. I am now the eternal outsider. It has been seven long and harsh years for me. I never planned to stay in the Gemstar system for long, only a year or two at most before returning to my home.
I had been awarded a research grant by the Grand Republic of Lantian for my seminal and ground-breaking work on just war theory and its application to genocide in the months before the Second Tumult. And thus, I came to Gemstar for where better to contemplate humanity’s soul than at the frontier of humanity?
God is fickle, God is great, and God is eternal.
When God struck down humanity for our sins, he elected to spare this mining outpost. And by sparing this mining outpost, he spared me. He spared me, Jonathan Ashcroft Rosenthal, alone of all the people of Hebron. And thus, I am alone amongst these gentiles of Lantian. Perhaps the people of Hebron still exist, much like the Lantians do here at Gemstar. Yet despite my desire for that to be true, I cannot deny that is very improbable. Even if they had survived the Tumult, they would most likely not have survived the post-Tumult violence and confusion. I still remember clearly the immediate aftermath of the Tumult.
I looked at the stars. They were ever so beautiful, a beauty that we mere mortals could never come to fully comprehend. And suddenly, the sky was alight. There were no explosions, simply light.
A primeval chill went down my spine. It could not be.
A Tumult?
The Lantians came to the same conclusion but did not show fear.
They had faith in their traditions.
I did not share their faith. I thought that we were all going to die. We did not. I cannot but attribute this to the Grand Republic of Lantian’s thorough foresight and methodical preparation for emergencies. When I had first arrived upon Gemstar I, I was remarkably surprised that entire communities from the likes of Naitzhouyu or Yisenji had come to settle. And with them came their remarkable social organization. The extended family had been a social institution that had naturally eroded away in many societies, but it had survived and flourished amongst the Lantian.
But as both a philosopher and a man of Hebron, there are some very disturbing tendencies found lurking under the Lantian psych. In times of peace, they are a people of thrift, hard work, study and with an impeccable taste for fine cuisine. Yet in times of crises, they have an innate behavior to become utterly without mercy, without morals, in order to preserve what they perceive to be their future. As a philosopher, I cannot denounce this behavior. It is a perfectly rational irrational response to a crisis that must undoubtedly have contributed to the continued existence of the Lantian people.
Are you Doctor Rosenthal?
Yes, I know you Senator Nguyen.
You have been nominated and approved to serve as Chancellor Fuji’s Foreign Minister in an emergency session of the Resplendent Senate.
Why?
Look at this folder. Operation Damascus has Level X Security Clearance, for your eyes only. Only the Chancellor, Chairman Lee and myself know about the details of that folder. You will not find this in any electronic form.
What it entails is an act of genocide.
It is a contingency plan. It is a contingency plan to be implemented should all other options fail. That is why you are now Foreign Minister, to try and negotiate a peaceful conclusion to this travesty.
And if I fail?
The designs for the ships are finished. The money has been allocated. If negotiations fail, we shall build a war fleet and send it to Horn.
To exterminate the ‘Al?
To enforce our rights, our sovereign rights over the system. We shall enforce the eviction of the ‘Al.
And doom an entire civilization to death in the Void.
This is survival Doctor. The Ansibyl Pearl awaits you.
May I inquire upon why I was chosen?
You may not Doctor. You know your duty and you shall carry it out. You are one of us. Your destiny is now forever intertwined with us. We are your family now. The people of Hebron are forever gone.
I cannot come to terms with the task I have been assigned to accomplish. And if I should fail, the ‘Al shall perish under barrages of hellfire. Their only crime would have been to have failed in the perilous waters of inter-state politicking in the Errai system. And to have come into opposition against the hopes of the Lantians.
I pray to God for guidance. And for a wise ‘Al.
