tanelor-fdi-belharra-png.610485

The Frégate de défense et d'intervention (FDI) program consists of five ships for the French navy, with commissioning now planned from 2024 onwards. Greece just signed an agreement with France's Naval Group to purchase three frigates, with an option for one more.

The very successful French Gowind class corvette is in service/ on order with the Egyptian navy (2 comissioned +2 under construction in Alexandria), Malaysia (1 launched +5 under construction), Argentina (2 comissioned +2 launched), Romania (1 under construction in France, 3 to be built in Constanta), the UAE (2 ordered), Indonesia (2 ordered) and Greece (3 agreed on as part of the Belharra contract, talks for up to 7 total including ships built here).
ARA ships like Bouchard (formerly French L'Adroit) follow of a different layout. Will do.

The Turkish Ada class corvettes bear some superfical similarity to the USN LCS Freedom ships but are a more conventional design. Four are in service, two more are under construction for Pakistan as the Babur class and another two are on order by Ukraine, to build themselves.

The Littoral Combat Ship, LCS (LM Freedom class, not the GD Independence class). Neither fish nor fowl, jack of all trades- master of none. A failed original concept- fast but unreliable. Though deliveries have not yet been completed, the USN has started to retire the the class.
The Saudis have been saddled with the MMSC variant. I think it is their punishment for the fate of a certain journalist.

ARA Bouchard (formerly L'Adroit) is a patrol vessel designed for maritime protection missions. She was originally part of the Gowind family of corvettes. The design was self-funded by DCNS without an initial customer, and was initially leased to the French Navy as L'Adroit before being sold to the Argentine Navy in November 2018. Two are in comission, two more have been launched.

Dutch sigma class frigate-corvette. In use by Indonesia (4 corvettes + 6 light frigates under construction), Morocco (2 corvettes+1 light frigate) and 8 light frigates under construction for Mexico. Electric propulsion makes it a silent sub hunter/ killer.
A good all rounder. My favourite.

The Stereguschiy and Gremyashchiy classes are the latest corvettes of the Russian navy. The Steregushchiy class are multipurpose corvettes, designed to replace the Grisha class.
9 of 18 Stereguschiy have been completed.

Two more may have been exported to Algeria in 2014-15. Another one has since been delivered and two more are currently under construction for the north african navy.

Gremyashchiy-class corvettes are enlarged multipurpose vessels, designed for higher endurance missions, and are able to launch cruise missiles.
2 of 6 Gremyashchiy have been completed. -edit- One, “Provorny”, was seriously damaged by fire during construction recently and is not expected to be completed before 2026, if ever.

Project 20386 is the newest, larger and stealthy class of corvettes based on the Gremyashchiy class. One out of ten ordered has been completed (Merkuriy?).

Buyan and Karakurt corvettes
tanelorn-buyan-and-karakurt-corvettes-png.612270

Buyan class corvettes are replacing the Soviet Nanuchkas. The original three that entered service in 2006 have been replaced by the -M variant that has some stealth, Kalibr or Oniks missiles and double the displacement, from 2010 onwards. 12 in service, 15 planned.
These have been superseeded since 2018 by the even more compact Karakurt class, even cheaper but with basically the same capabilities. 3 in service, 8 completed,16 planned in total.
tanelorn-gepard-frigate-png.612272

With a problematic launch history that spanned the 90s, the first Gepard frigate entered Russian service in 2003, followed by a second one in 2012, while a third one is partly complete. One was used to fire missiles from the Caspian sea, to hit targets in Syria. Two more pairs of frigates entered Vietnamese service in 2011 and 2018 respectively.

Modern German navy ships:
The K130 Braunschweig class is Germany's newest class of ocean-going corvettes. Five ships have replaced the Gepard-class fast attack craft of the German Navy from 2008 onwards.
In 2016 it was announced that a second batch of five more corvettes is to be procured from 2022–25.

The Israeli Saar 6 is a derivative of the Braunschweig. Two entered commission last year, two more are under way.
tanelorn-saar-6-png.612433

Here is a Saar 5 from 93 for comparisson. Three built.
tanelorn-saar-5-png.612435

The F123 Brandenburg is a class of four German frigates commissioned between 1994 and 1996 to replace the Hamburg-class destroyers. These frigates primarily carry out anti-submarine warfare. Their design includes some stealth features. Currently the F123 class is being upgraded.

The F124 Sachsen is the German Navy's latest class of three AA frigates, entering commission in 2003. The design of the Sachsen-class frigate is based on that of the Brandenburg class but with enhanced stealth features. They are comparable to destroyers in capability and size and replaced the Lütjens class. A fourth ship option was not taken up.

The F125 Baden-Württemberg-class are four multi mission frigates of the German Navy, which have the highest displacement of any class of frigate worldwide, because they are really destroyers. They are to replace the Bremen class (one still active). Three entered commission since 2019, one is under construction.

The Kola class wwere a group of 8 frigates built for the Soviet Navy in the 1950s.These ships were analogous to WWII destroyer escorts. They were considered too expensive, so the smaller and cheaper Riga-class frigate was built instead. All were scrapped in the 70s.
tanelorn-echo-ii-ssn-png.617941

The Project 675 Echo II nuclear-powered cruise-missile submarines were modified to carry the Front series of radars and launch the SS-N-3 Shadock anti-carrier weapons. The submarine itself was highly vulnerable to attack while on the surface operating its radar. A total of 29 Echo IIs were constructed between 1962 and 1968, of which 10 were converted to carry the SS-N-12 by the mid-1980s. By that time the Echos were obsolete. All had been de-commissioned by the mid-1990s.
At least four Echo submarines suffered serious accidents.
tanelorn-impavido-de-png.617965

The Impetuoso class were the first post-WWII destroyers built for the Italian Navy. The two ships, based on an uncompleted WWII design entered service in 1958 and were retired in the early 1980s.
The Impavido class were the first Italian guided missile destroyers. Comparable to the US Navy's Coontz and Charles F. Adams classes in their ASW and long-range anti-aircraft capabilities However, they were not armed with SSM's. These two ships were essentially improved Impetuoso-class vessels, with the aft gun-turret replaced by a Tartar missile launcher and associated radar. In comission 1963 to 1992.

The Skoryy class were the first destroyers built for the Soviet Navy after WWII. Seventy ships were built between 1949 and 1953 and were also exported to Egypt (3), Poland (2) and Indonesia (8). Stayed in service till the mid-80s. Insert flip the flag joke here.
The Rivere was a class of nine frigates built for the French Navy in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Labeled "aviso-escorteur" (fr: "sloop-escort"), they were designed to perform the role of overseas patrol and anti-submarine escort. They served until the 90s when two were sold to Uruguay. Four similar ships were built for the Portuguese Navy as the João Belo class.
The Cleveland class was a group of light cruisers built for the U.S. Navy during WWII. They were the most numerous class of light cruisers ever built (27). Six that were completed as or converted into guided missile cruisers were reactivated during the 1950s and then served into the 1970s. All, particularly the Talos-armed ships, suffered from great stability problems due to the extra top weight.
USS Bainbridge was a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser, originally designated a nuclear-powered guided missile destroyer leader, called a "frigate" at the time in the United States Navy, the only ship of her class. Served until 1995.
Shrunk versions of the Osa I, Shershen and Combatante II missle/ torpedo boats.
The Algerine-class minesweeper was a large group (110) of minesweepers built for the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy between 1942 and 1944. Five were later (1948) transferred to the Greek Navy, and served till the mid/ late 70s. Five were transferred to the Belgian Navy, two to South Africa and two to Ceylon; another five, one apiece, were acquired by Burma, Nigeria, Italy, Iran, and Thailand. Two were transferred to Belgium in 1959. One was in service until 2012 with the Royal Thai Navy.
