"Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws."

- Douglas Adams

Now don't get me wrong you won't find a bigger HHGG fan than me, but if you can tell me what that has to do with "Lasers" then I'm all ears.
Umm... Lasers are light and nothing travels faster than them... Except bad news

I'm fine with some comedic quotes, as long as they're balanced with a good portion of serious quotes. Nothing's more awesome than Leonard Nimoy reading the Benediction of Moses from Civ4. ^_^

Especially considering Leonard Nimoy was Jewish. That was special. :)

Anyway, I suppose there will immediately be a PAP* mod, if people don't like the humourous quotes.

That way, everyone can be happy.

*Prim and proper.

I don't mind the Garrison Keillor quote. It's not as good as the Monty Python one, which is absolutely perfect. Plus now I know who Garrison Keillor is. Nothing to get upset over...

Honestly I'm just amazed they chose to put a Garrison Keillor quote in a game not exactly targeted at the same audience as 'A Prairie Home Companion'.

These quotes are much too goofy for my taste. I prefer tech quotes that mostly aim for the profound, with just the occasional witticism or pop culture reference instead.

That Roman Empire joke is cringingly bad. Plus, if the tech is "early empire," why is the quote talking about the collapse of the most successful classical empire? Lots of good alternatives. Maybe Ennius's Moribus antiquis res stat Romana virisque ("By ancient customs and men the Roman state stands.") Or maybe Virgil's Romane, memento, / Hae tibi erunt artes: pacique imponere morem, / Parcere subjectis et debellare superbos. ("Roman, remember, these will be your arts: to make peace the law, to spare the conquered and to crush the proud.")

Remember, it seems like there are multiple quotes for techs/civics. So it's likely there are already "alternatives" in game.

I don't know what all the quotes are, but the example you gave isn't even funny. It's just dumb.

Instead of air conditioning, have accumulated corruption, PRIDE which has become prideFULL, Praetorians determining the Caesar without regard to the good of the empire ... and it seems quite appropriate. ;)

Just look at the circus the U.S. elections have become. :(

It's not the humor that's an issue, it's the terrible choices of quotes.

Some are good, but way too many are just drawn-out excerpts, and lack punch or wit.

The guy who speaks the quotes is just awesome. He gets anything to sound cool.

I don't like them at all. We've only seen pre-classical era techs and civics but most of the quotes are supposedly funny sayings from some unknown - to me at least - American comedians, or so I suppose. Take the Early Empire civic for instance:

Alpha Centauri Quotes:

"I think, and my thoughts cross the barrier into the synapses of the machine - just as the good doctor intended. But what I cannot shake, and what hints at things to come, is that thoughts cross back. In my dreams the sensibility of the machine invades the periphery of my consciousness. Dark. Rigid. Cold. Alien. Evolution is at work here, but just what is evolving remains to be seen."
  • Commissioner Pravin Lal, "Man and Machine"
"Air power rests at the apex of the first triad of victory, for it combines Mobility, Flexibility, and Initiative."
  • Spartan Battle Manual
"The Morgans fear what may not be purchased, for a trader cannot comprehend a thing that is priceless."
  • Sister Miriam Godwinson, "The Collected Sermons"
"There are two kinds of scientific progress: the methodical experimentation and categorization which gradually extend the boundaries of knowledge, and the revolutionary leap of genius which redefines and transcends those boundaries. Acknowledging our debt to the former, we yearn, nonetheless, for the latter."
  • Academician Prokhor Zakharov, "Address to the Faculty"
"I believe Planet will talk to us if we are willing to listen. These fungal stalks behave as multistate relays: taken together, the neural net connectivity must be staggering. Can a planet be said to have achieved sentience?"
