Would you like the added space even if it gives another scroll bar?

I am currently in the process of completely moving around and adding space in the tech tree. This benefits both Zappara in the new upcoming update of his with giving him additional space if needed as well as for modmodders to add their own techs like Afforess' Meteorology Modmod does. The above poll option will be for all users of RoM 2.8 regarding the vertical spacing of the techs. I plan to add 8 extra "Y Axis" coordinates as well as several "X Axis" columns in addition. This may cause a vertical scroll bar to appear in which I have no control over. My question is this to you fellow players and Modmodders: "How much vertical space would you prefer if it causes the vertical scroll bar to appear?". To keep in mind, each tech takes up 1 "X Axis" coordinate and 2 "Y Axis" coordinates.

I'm not sure I understand this whole layout. More space is good - in principle - but a vertical scrollbar is a P.I.T.A. I want to scroll horizontally and at the same time be able to look after a specific tech. I DO NOT want to have to scroll horizontally, then vertically to look for it, then horizontally, then ...

I want to get rid of the darn thing but I'm not sure how. Afforress said that it scales itself but I'm not sure how. If I could both scale it down while adding a little more room vertically, then I'll be in business. Until I or someone figures that out, that would be the only way to satisfy those that don't like it.

You misunderstood when I said it scales. It scales the size, but any Y coordinate past 20 and it will create a scroll bar. What I recommended was moving techs around, creating new columns, not more rows. Then, with the new columns, spread the techs around a bit. It would be a bit of work though.

I agree. We need more columns. Especially with all the new modmod techs.

I would also add that I think the boxes should be wider since there have been some with so much info in the tech that it bleeds off the tech box.

Yeah, I knew that much, I just wanted the input on it. I just did a test run on it to see what others thought. I'm currently doing a visual excel sheet to help me move them around since it makes it easier to move things around with visual organized coordinates. When I'm finished, I'll upload the sheet and if you, Zappara, or anyone else want to alter it to have me do the xml sheet in that same manner, then I'm open to the task of making and uploading the files for those that need it for their modmods (more specifically Zappara and Afforress since this is RoM 2.8). I'm currently doing the Renaissance era so I should be done with the whole thing in under an hour :smoke:

Please note that I will be uploading the EXCEL sheet, not the XML that is used by RoM 2.8. The XML will be changed for specific people on my priority list first.

Edit: The visual tech-tree has been uploaded on the first post. Zappara please feel free to alter it to your liking for 2.8 and reupload the new file so I can save you the trouble of doing menial tasks meant for administrative people like me.

I would much rather avoid the vertical scroll-bar and keep things at 20 rows. Of course, adding new columns is therefore the way to go, so I will definitely support your revised tech tree if you add new columns but keep the row count at 20.

Oh yes, I will leave it at the original 20. I'm waiting until Zappara decides whether he wants to revise the list and upload it so I change the XML instead. It does take quite a bit of time to do it. I made the excel sheet to make it easier on me and anyone else that decides to add techs. I say Zappara because it is his main layout and I don't want to intrude too much. I can say that I'd help anyone provided my level of ability on the matter permits it since I like doing the tedious tasks. I'm the kind of person that gets most of the work done simply because no one really likes the paperwork portions of the job

I gave up on that a long time ago. At this point, my installer just wipes out your current XML folder and replaces it. Same with python. I've made too many changes, and I even created a completely new XML file...

When I first started modding, I loved XML, but as time goes on, I find it to be more and more tedious...

Well, feel free to ask to dump the menial jobs on me. I have no issue with it since I'm not doing much at the moment anyway.
As for the XML, if you need me to, I can redo the tech-tree if you want, I'll just have to have whatever current set you need me to work with :smug:

I don't have much to give you, but I'm sure HydromancerX could dump a year's worth of requests on you, if you're serious.

As long as it's nothing too complicated. Like I said, I can take care of the simple boring tasks leaving you to the important jobs at hand.

Oh, well he mostly requests more buildings. That's just lots and lots of XML. :(

Hmm, I could be up for the task. I'd just need a basic guide on doing it. It has to be easier than figuring out how to debug python at least.

The Modiki explains what every standard BTS XML tag is for, and my OP for my modmod's, if you scroll down a bit, explains all the new XML tags I added.

It's fairly simple to add new buildings, modularly. Look at the castle mod in my modules folder for a self-contained example.

FfH2 manages to have a satisfactory vertical scrollbar because it isn't all interlinked and you can finish one try with minimal in another.

RoM OTOH is very interlinked and so it is impossible to do it sanely, therefore I advocate more columns and no more rows

That's because RoM has 5x more techs. ;)
Yep, if you want an idea of how many techs there are there are approximately 291 :eek2: in the standard RoM 2.8 mod. If you don't believe me, download the excel sheet I posted in this thread and count 'em yourself. That's why I made the thread to figure out how to move them around to be more efficient.
