"The great mistake of our predecessors was not their lust for wealth. It was not their turning their backs on God. It was not their quest for power, nor was it the desire to overthrow the bourgeoisie, nor was it their quest to unlock the power of the atom. No, it was something else.

Perhaps all of those may be true, but they are not the cause; they are symptoms. To create a better world, we must eradicate the disease itself.

I am Gikuyu. (This is not a digression.) My mother told me my people's beliefs in a Nairobi flat, once upon a time, and one of them is this: Ngai created our world. Ngai lands upon Mount Kenya to inspect our world from time to time, as an artisan might inspect their work, or as a gardener might inspect their orchard. If Ngai discerns that something might need fixing, then Ngai fixes it.

What Ngai did or who Ngai even is, none of this is relevant. Call it what you like. Ngai, Gaia, Shiva, Allah, God. Earth. All I know is that Ngai did indeed land upon Mount Kenya, as we say, and that Ngai made the requisite fixes.

That, then, was the great mistake of our predecessors. In all their grandeur, they did not consider for a moment that the world is not ours. Rather, we belong to the world. They did not consider that what befell them was not a calamity, but the solution.

I may be Gikuyu, but before the power of nature, that name and the language it carries all mean nothing. Tonight, I come before you as a human being, a humble part of this great world. We cannot live as we once did if we hope for the cycle to be broken. We must build a society to serve our world. Only then will we be truly liberated.

And where better to start than the cradle of our species itself?"

Holy Kingdom Of Zion
Ideology: Isolationist

Extra:

"And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof." -Revelation 5:5

The Holy Kingdom of Zion is a Rastafari theocracy, formed from the ashes of the old Carribean. The devestation of the Third World War turned the once idyllic tropical paradises into a battlefield. Metal behemoths bled oil into the ocean as the most sophisticated navies fought each other into pulp, and the verdant jungles were burnt to the ground, the people included. Who did the razing was irrelevant; the only thing that mattered was that Babylon's hedonistic tendencies finally collasped in on itself in an orgy of death and destruction.

In the ruins of the once proud islands came salvation. A lowly member of a Jamaican posse, or gang, survived the devastation. His birth name allegedly being Kirk Marson according to the best intel, he only answers to the moniker "Buffalo Soldier" after receiving a vision from Jah to lead His people back to Zion and to rule in His holy law. Since this covenant, Buffalo Soldier has worn a mask over his face at all times, a crude visage of an American Bison. The reason for this reinvention of his identity is a mystery to all but himself, but if the Marson lead is accurate, pre-Troubles records shows an outstanding warrant for "Kirk Marson" by Interpol for mutliple accounts of murder and drug smuggling in both Jamaica and the United States.

Buffalo Soldier's message, one of rejection of western decadence, capitalism, and an embracing of the African heritage of the vast black majority in Jamaica, made him a sort of messianic figure in the ruins of the Caribbean island. While other figures, warlords and the remnants of the old government promised survival, Soldier promised salvation. And the people flocked to him, creating a community of followers in the faith. Those who resisted were eventually crushed by his growing army, dubbed "Jah's Army" in reference to the name of God in the Rastafari tradition.

After the unification of Jamaica under Soldier's control, the Holy Kingdom of Zion was officially founded. Rastafari Christianity became the state religion and the sole legal faith; a cult of personality venerating Haile Selassie (or Ras Tafari, as he is known by his followers) as Jesus's second coming (and thus, due to trinitarianism, Jah himself) became persuasive on the island. His portrait could be found in every home, on every street corner, and especially in every church. State schools officially teach that Selassie was divine and that ensured the salvation of every faithful Zionese boy and girl. Soldier does not claim divinity himself nor a member of the Solomonic dynasty, but is still persistent in the cult of personality as Jah's prophet.

Although Reparation, or the return of the faithful to Africa (especially Ethiopia herself) is a clear and important tenant of Rastafari, it is known that the Ras Tafari urged religious leaders to seek a policy of "Liberation before reparation". In that regards, the immediate goal of Zion was to bring its spiritual revolution to the neighboring islands of the Carribean. The first such island to reach its attention was Hispaniola, which also is mostly populated by black people. Missions were set up to teach scripture in the Rastafari tradition. Brutal warlords (and warlords that oppossed the arrival of the Zionese and their religion) were dispossed by Jah's Army, at this point becoming more like a professional army as Jamaica's industry started to recover. Soon enough, the whole island was liberated, and become part of the Kingdom.

At this point, language became an important issue. English (or more specifically, Jamaican Patois) was the de facto official language, being the most spoken language on Jamaica. However, the acquisition of Hispaniola complicated things, as half the island spoke French, the other half spoke Spanish, and neither spoke English natively. However, rather than forcing English on Hispaniola, or creating a myraid set of bureaucratic issues by having to translate every edict into three languages, Soldier instead decreed that the church language of Amharic (in which Rastafari holds the first Bible was written in) would become Zion's sole official language. Even Soldier has shifted his appearances to use Amharic instead of his native English (even if international observers from Africa can tell he does not speak it natively, and with a huge accent). The fact the Zionese bureaucracy that has existed was already running fine in English, and that very few people actually spoke or even understand Amharic, has meant that Jamaican Patois still serves as a de facto second official language.

Soon, Zion's attention would be pointed at the largest island in the Carribean, Cuba. Cuba represented a test of the faithful. As the largest island, it had the best reserve of resources that the Zionese desperately needed. However, while there is a strong afro-cuban tradition, the majority of Cubans were white or Mestizo. While nothing in Rastafari scripture prevented non-black adherents, it would definitely seem odd as pan-Africanism and black nationalism are two of the most important tenants of the faith.

However, an in was found. Although the pre-war government has by long since dissapeared, the Castros were held in near-mythical regards by most of the surviving Cubans. And Fidel Castro, both through his speeches emphasizing a link between Cuban identity and Africa, and independence movements he helped support in interventions in Angola and other such countries, clearly were in line with the official state theology. Thusly, the "cult" behind Castro was co-opted by the Zionese, with Castro being considered a man in line with Jah, who created a revolution to liberate Cuba from Babylon. Emphasis was also placed that Hispanics were not "white devils", but fellow victims of Babylon. This change of rhetoric won the hearts and minds of Cuba, and any resistance to the Zionese expansion were swiftly crushed to the elation of the newly converted Cubans.

Now, the Kingdom of Zion looks eastward, not just to unite the rest of the Carribean islands into a single nation (the first time in history), but further eastwards, back to Africa. After all, if Liberation is completed, the only thing left is Reparation...

The Mexican Federation
Ideology: Militarist
Centralization: Low 25%
Political Freedom: Medium
Tech Expertise Priorities: Bio, Energy, Psych, Computing, Materials
Claims: Mexico, Michoacan, Zacatecas
History: Since the early days of it's independence, Mexico had found itself under the influence of it's more populous Northerly neighbor. Whether friend or foe, Mexico lived under the shadow of the American nation. And so it was at the turning of the first quarter of the 21st Century, "The Troubles" as they were soon to be called, rapidly spread south of the border. While Mexico herself was never directly targeted in the Great War, society rapidly sprawled into chaos, vast stretches of "el Norte" falling to various narco-states, warlords, rogue generals and worst of all: gringos.

To preserve some semblance of order, a number of government officials, military personnel, the rich and influential, scientists, and the intellectual elite, who would later be take the name "Los Preservadores", would take matters into their own hands and overthrow the central Mexican government. And like the phoenix of lore; the Mexican Federation was proclaimed. The original cabal still keeping a tight lease on the reigns of power. And control of water, food, medical and energy supplies, dolling these out when necessary to ensure some loyalty to the regime. Leveraging control over these resources has enabled the government the ability to bride, convince and generally cajole several warlords to back into its fold, integrate the new lands, then in turn use their resources to continue a steady Reconquesta of the north. Brutally making an example of several rebellious warlords and gringos has allowed the central government to maintain control, if a very a loose one.

With a general lack of cross-sea communications the Catholic Church in Mexico has found itself divided on how to proceed. Some among st the clergy have called for one of their number to be elected as the new pope, with a large minority pointing at that the authority of the papacy cannot so easily be replicated out of convenience. Instead arguing to consider the Papacy 'Vacant' until such a time that the ultimate fate of Rome can be decided. In many parts of the Mexican highland the clergy works to keep some manner of standard of living within their flock, even if secular authority is apathetic at best, hostile at worst. Even so both factions have done their best to denounce the numerous Neoaztecs movements which have sprung out, and the cult of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Muerte. Santa Muerte, already popular pre-war has surged in popularity, with her devotees believing her to have intervened from heaven to save as many people as possible, small roadside shrines dot the land.

Extra: While South America saw little in the way of major fighting during the great conflagration, the Third World War had a devastating affect on the continent, especially in the North. As war tore through the rest of the world, the Great Powers became increasingly reliant on the resources produced in the region, especially food and oil. As the conflict quickly spiraled out of control, the demand for South American resources led to infighting between South American nation states over control of resources and valuable trade routes, and the sharp drop in production from the Resource Conflicts deepened the worsening shortages.

The decline in resource production and the breakdown of international law culminated in the invasion of Caracas by a coalition of oil companies to keep production up. This was the start of the Black Imperialism Era, when corporations and foreign powers invaded South America en masse to seize control of valuable South American resources in the last years of the World War. Even after the war petered out and international communications broke down, the many corporate and colonial states remained in power, continuing to strip mine for valuable goods to sell to keep their fledgling states afloat at the expense of the local populace.

Many of these corporate states were extremely short lived, especially in the southern half of the continent, but the North was a different story. Seeing the threat of socialist uprisings spreading to their region, corporate states in the north half of South America spreading into Central America banded together to form the Latin American Union, obstensively to promote better economic and political cooperation but in reality a military alliance to better coordinate their dominance over the region. Uprisings were met with increasingly violent crackdowns by the LAU forces, and guerrilla forces were being pressured hard by the combined military might of the corporate states.

The LAU teetered on the edge despite their success against armed uprisings, but it would not be a guerrilla force or a violent revolution that finally broke the back of the corporate state, but by a peace march in Caracas, the city that saw the birth of the Black Imperialism. Marches against the LAU were common and often provoked a violent response from security forces, but the anti-LAU movement pressed on under the leadership Father Marcos Reyes, a Catholic priest who preached the nonviolent approaches of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Intelligent, compassionate, and deeply charismatic, Father Reyes, who the people were starting to herald as Father Libertador, was seen as a danger to the stability of the LAU, so during a peace march security forces arrested, starting a massacre that left almost fifty people dead and permanently maimed Father Reyes.

Would it be possible to claim north and south New Zealand, plus Tasmania? I realise that's a bit further than the English channel distance...

EDIT: assuming that there will be navies and rules for ship-based shenanigans

Alternatively known to some by the Moari name for New Zealand, Aotearoa.

The islands have a long history of contact, and conflict. Known for their progressive society and achieving a high standard of living before the Troubles, and for being early leaders in renewable energy, the region was largely spared violence, but suffered nonetheless from the total collapse of global trade and tourism. Severe earthquakes in South Island the 2030’s contributed to a decline of many cities. The islanders were faced with the imminent breakdown of social order and the threat of attack by pirates and armed migrant groups from neighbouring pacific regions. At the same time, these beautiful islands became a refuge and haven for free-thinkers and visionaries from around the world.

Seeking mutual defence, and seeing shared interests in developing new independent industry and ‘green’ technologies, the islands of New Zealand and Tasmania have now united under the treaty of Dunedin, named after the city in South Island where the agreement was signed (interestingly, also the Gaelic name for Edinburgh, Scotland). No formal ties remain to what was Great Britain and the Commonwealth.

While the population remains relatively low, this has made it easier to pursue progressive social policies - giving power to local communities; encouraging 'green' agriculture; and using the latest technologies to develop rugged, decentralised utility systems - power, water, transport and communications. A confident new generation seeks to embrace ‘The Great Turning’, and seeks to export a bold new vision of a new humanity - united in pursuing peace, health, and wellbeing in harmony with nature. Technologies to further clean the air, land and water are being actively pursued, as are alternative economic models and the ultimate goal of a ‘workless’ economy. There are even dreams to reach out into space.

This shameless idealism is not without a backbone; the islanders call upon the fighting spirit of their NZDF predecessors and Moari ancestors to defend their islands over land and sea, with well-trained soldiers that can trace their heritage from the world wars of the 20th century through to the hard fighting in NATO’s flashpoints of the 2010’s and 2020’s. Several capable warships have been inherited from the former Australian, New Zealand and even US navies, though there is a shortage of modern fighter aircraft.

Nonetheless the government has a deliberately small imprint. The Dunedin agreement is born of shared ideals, and will only survive by continued agreement.

Policies strictly limiting migration and settlement, even by desperate groups of refugees, remain controversial - perhaps the single most divisive issue for the islanders.

Attention!
This work of fiction has been deemed counterrevolutionary...

Excerpt from Jonestown 2050 by Emmanuel Haig
The West doesn't know a lot about what is happening in the American Midwest. They know that, on the map, a self-proclaimed revolutionary proletariat dictatorship has formed under the auspices of Chairman Anderson. Nobody knows who Anderson was before he joined up with Red Army units in the 2030s. The United States of the 2020s and her private data companies had a file on everybody it seems, but not Anderson. This, combined with his military ability, allowed him to rise high in status among the competing socialist warlords.

But what Anderson had that many of these other leaders lacked was a really Jim Jones charisma. Anderson wove a Christian message with revolutionary socialist thought to sell one or the other. He was the complete package for a man wanting to take over the Midwest...

...but don't let the revolutionary zeal confuse you. Anderson has under his control much of the American Rustbelt: idling and rusting factories that tomorrow can churn out automobiles and tanks alike. A skilled cohort of engineers are working sixteen hours a day, seven days a week, to get the factories running. A large mass of previously unemployed young men and women are toiling away in the cities to clear away the rubble. In the countryside, the agricultural collectives under the watchful eye of the PSC are trying to feed the engineers, the workers, and themselves in that order....

...Anderson's cult of personality is reaching into every aspect of Midwestern life. The churches still open on Sundays unlike some other revolutionary states, but a large portrait of Chairman Anderson adorns them all. Working groups in the cities work beneath the watching eye of Chairman Anderson, whose face is seems to be on every wall, billboard, and blimp in the city.

What makes Anderson's America distinctly troubling is that the walls are watching. The billboards are watching. The blimps are watching. Your neighbors are listening and recording you 24/7 and they themselves are being listened to and recorded 24/7. Counterrevolutionaries are arrested by the dozens in massive dusk raids, put on trial that night, and executed at dawn...

The country's intranet is almost cut off from the rest of the world. Every person in the country is issued a state smartphone with access to the intranet, and every person has a social media account on one of the country's three social media networks. The point of the exercise is obvious...

While Portugalicia was a neat concept, after consideration it didn't feel particularly interesting to play so I am going with another nation I had in mind instead. Consider this my new and improved sign-up.

People's Socialist Republic of Uruguay

República Socialista Popular de Uruguay

360px_PosadistUruguay_flag-2.png

Ideology:
Socialist
Centralisation: High
Political Freedom: Average
Tech Expertise Priorities: Materials, Psych, Bio, Computing, Energy
Claims: Uruguay*, Corrientes, Paraguay

The complete destabilisation of South America and collapse of governments across the continent as a result of the exploitation of resources and internal wars opened up a window of opportunity for an unexpected revolution to take place in Uruguay. When popular uprisings culminated in the assassination of President Herrera and the storming of the parliament in Montevideo by angry masses, the Revolutionary Workers' Party, a Trotskyist-Posadist fringe group within the Uruguayan left, seized the moment and gathered support from revolutionary leaders in the broad popular movement aswell as the military, eventually filling the power vacuum by establishing a socialist workers' state with the tenets of the Posadist Fourth International as an ideological foundation for the new government. By taking advantage of anarchy in Argentina and Paraguay, the Posadist revolution was exported west and north beyond Uruguay's old borders, and plans for a new South American space program are currently under way with the hopes of exploring the extent of extraterrestrial life in our galaxy.

The nuclear devastation of the Third World War is generally considered a positive event by the Posadist regime who view it as a means for establishing a new socialist world order without being bound to old hierarchies. Ideologically, the Trotskyist concept of permanent revolution has been taken to an extreme with the additional notion that extraterrestrial life not only is likely to exist but that the arrival of alien beings on Earth would bring about worldwide communism, and as such they should be greeted as liberators from oppression. These ideas are based on the theories outlined by J. Posadas, arguing that any society advanced enough to be capable of long-distance space travel must be socialist in nature and would help advance the revolution by exporting their form of communism to humankind.
