I am using Civ IV Complete Edition, a DVD package which includes all versions of Civ 4, and run BTS.
Well, it works perfectly fine, except that so many texts are not shown correctly. For example, on diplomacy screen it shows "TXT_KEY_LEADER_HANNIBAL-TXT_KEY_CIV_CARTHAG"(E) (out of screen area I guess E goes there) instead of simply showing "Hannibal"

This type of error is occuring not only on him but in many places. (eg. stable, UN resolution) I checked updates from the game and there are none available.

When I went to the official site and tried to install updates manually, it says that it doesn't detect Civ 4 BTS, when I downloaded update for normal Civ 4 it's the same.

Is there any way I can fix this error? I can still pay but it's very annoying.

My system is Intel Core2Duo 2Ghz 2MB Memory GeForce 7600 128mb Windows Vista Home Premium

The game is in English and the operating system is Japanese. Though, I have never experienced language incompatibility with English software in my entire PC life.

thanks for pointing out the language problem.

this must be my first experience with language incompatibility. I changed OS operating mode to English, uncached and started up the program again. it works :) many thanks.

Hey yuizaki,
I have a Japanese system too. And I solved that problem by editing the XML files. In Japanese systems, some non-ascii characters with accents just before the closing tags of the XML causes that problem.

Here is the solution without needing to change your system language:

Folder is:
\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Beyond the Sword\Assets\XML\Text\

Affected files are:
CIV4GameText_BTS_FourthRoundTranslation.xml
CIV4GameText_BTS_PatchText.xml
CIV4GameText_Objects_BTS.xml

Perform these text replacements in all of those files:
  • All ä â á à To>> a
  • All ü ú To>> u
  • All ó ö To>> u
  • All í î To>> i
  • All ê é To>> e
  • All ñ To>> n
Hope this helps ;)

Hi Buraque,

Thanks for your information. I am not sure what I really meant by "system language." Maybe it means something more advanced than what I have done. Editing XML is a bit too advanced for me, so here's another way you can save for effort.

What I've done is first, I went to control panel, clocked on "options on region and language," and changed the region to USA. Then, I uncached the game by pressing shift while double clicking on Civ4BTS icon. This dumps the cache and supplies with a new one.

It's only the first time you need to do this so after you cached the game with USA region mode, you can change the region back to Japan, or wherever you wish.

I hope this information helps all people who find this thread with the same problem.
