TH4 - The Age of Sail - OPEN SG

Eeek, we're about to slip to the second page!

Well, this is exactly the part where I can't take it to play, since I know where all the islands we haven't found yet are (there's a good one right next to <stuffs fist in mouth>).

Arathorn, LKendter, anyone else who wanted to 'got it at some point'... the islands need a leader! :D

I *want* it, but I just don't have time to do anything with it at this point. Microscopic chance that this evening will be free, but I just can't squeeze in the hour-plus.... Sorry. Looks like a very fun time to grab the game.

Arathorn

There is one island that can be seen but not reached yet. It looks like there's some good stuff on it. I left a galley parked there just waiting for the next player after Engineering arrives . . . .

I need a quick fix. I will get it.
Grimjack

450AD Spend some time familiarizing myself. Do some checking on diplomatic status.
Aztecs have 2 gold and nothing else. English are up Engineering and do have an extra wine.
SPanish are richer than Aztecs, they have 3 gold and nothing else. Japan are not so nehind as Aztecs or SPanish, but they only have 2 gold
to their name. Greeve has MOnotheism, and some 150 gold, but no Republic. Do no trades. WIll wait for ENgineering,
unless something specific shows itself.

IBT: Forests speed a Marketplace.

460AD: Yack, Reagan wasn't kidding when he said MM makes a difference in this game. I can only hop eI have the stamina to
fiddle citizens every turn for a couple of cities. ( You can gain some 5 gpt and 2 food without losing production. )
Decide to explore along Azyecs land instead of a possibly free island up north.

IBT: Greece has acquired MOnarchy, and starts to build Hanging gardens.

470AD: Diplo check reveals than MOnotheism has spread around, as has monarchy. Trade Incense, Horses, 70 gold for wines and Engineering from Lizzy.
Trade Monotheism from Greece for 70 gold and ENgineering. Set a lone scientist on Feudalism. ( Just in case. Is thinking on trading. )
Got no money left for rushing, so I press end turn.

480AD: Go to war against Greece, since they would not grant us the city of Argos. Reagans predictions are correct, it is still defended by warrior
Argos is captured, and a galley is sunk. We hurry harbour in iron city. Consider getting Lizzy in the fight as well. It is fairly cheap, dyes plus some change.
HOwever, I do not want a prolonged war. I want to be able to sue for peace fast, now that we have gotten what we wanted. Lets hope Greece doesn't enroll Lizzy.
Just in case, I switch Temple in Glanum to spearman and rush him.

IBT: Nothing remarkable

490AD: Some more scouting.

IBT: Greece lands an archer on our main island. Aztecs found a city on our most northern outpost.

500AD: Found Rutu on a southern island. Need two warriors to kick Greek archer off of our island. To prevent further intrusions,
I upgrade a warrior to a gallic swordsman. Unfortunately, we didn't have any vets, so I upgraded a regular. :(

IBT: Ack, Lizzy seems to think us weak, as she demands dyes. If she would have asked for money, I would have payed. SInce she is gredey,
I decline. Luckily she bluffed. :o

510AD Not wanting a repeat, I sell her the dyes for 35 gold. Discover that the island to our north is big enough for it to have rivers.
Do a 2 shield rush in Entremont to save a turn on a vet gallic swordsman.

IBT: Greece lands a hoplite and an archer next to Glanum.

520Ad Noting much. Have no offensive forces in Glanum, so I just hunker behind a hut.

IBT: Greece archer gets one hit from destroying a fortified spear. ENglish city of London gets Great Library.

530AD: Much exploration, not much else. Rush walls in Glanum.

IBT: aztecs finally boot our forces out of their territory. Negative war weariness strikes, and ENtremont goes into disorder.
I use scrollahed to prevent any more disorders. Greece lands two more warriors next to Glanum.

540AD: Our bold sailors will soon have circumnavigated the world. HOrseman in Glanum kills one of the warriors. We then get peace with Greece when they pay us 4 gpt.

IBT: Nada

550AD: Some more micromanagement revelas that we ought to mine the two plains near Entremont if we want that city to get to
10 spt.

This game is fun for all of the MM opps, huh?

Not wanting a repeat, I sell her the dyes for 35 gold.

Once you deny an AI extortion attempt and they don't declare war, I believe you have twenty turns during which they won't attempt another extortion or declare war (absent some provocation on your part).

Yack, Reagan wasn't kidding when he said MM makes a difference in this game.

What else could one expect from a T-hawk SG? :) (Well, it wasn't really on purpose, but it did occur to me that some micromanagement of water cities would be needed.)

We didn't trigger our Golden Age during that war, did we? Well, there'll be future chances, although if we want to do it with wonders we'll need Sistine, since Bach's is pretty useless.

I believe you have twenty turns during which they won't attempt another extortion or declare war (absent some provocation on your part).

IIRC from one of the Apolyton threads, it was twenty turns in Civ3, but in PTW it's been changed to a variable duration of 12-20 turns to keep the player guessing. (In unpatched PTW it was bugged to give 0-20 turns, and AIs would often come demanding tribute from you every two or even one turns.)

Glad to see things moving again, thanks Grimjack and JMB :goodjob: OH, and I think GRimjack's SHift key is getting a bit STicky there :D

Interestingly, I didn't bother MMing things all that much (after the initial turn) as there really didn't seem to be any need (instead, I'd just rush things... ;)). We are way ahead of the other AIs and not in any danger...

550 - Wake a transported warrior and position him on a mountain. A bit of MM, but nothing much.

560 - Build embassies with the Aztecs (33 gold; size 3 - 2 content, 1 entertainer; 5 spearmen, 1 galley, building a jag warrior; 4 spt, 0 fpt), Japan (37 gold; size 4 - 4 content; 7 spearmen, 1 settler, and 1 archer, building a harbor; 3 spt, 3 fpt; 60% taxes), and Spain (29 gold; size 3 - 2 content, 1 entertainer; 5 spearmen, building a harbor; 3 spt, 0 fpt; 60% taxes). Hurry a temple in Isca (88 gold), Glanum (112 gold) and a settler in Entremont (88 gold).

570 to 610 - Not much.

620 - Hurry harbor in Segusio and Rutupiae, and a settler in Isca. Otherwise, not much.

630 - Found Axima and hurry a harbor in Tolosa. Not much else. IBT, we complete our FP.

640 - Hurry a harbor in Curovernum, otherwise, not much. IBT, whoops, I lost a caraval, a spearman, and a settler in treacherous waters (I need to pay more attention to sea versus ocean tiles...).

650 - Hurry a settler in Tolosa. There is a caraval and a warrior outside this city to pick up the settler next turn and transport him to another island. Otherwise not much.

Notes for the next leader: 1) Consider rushing settlers from our totally corrupt cities that can grow quickly (or are size 3) and then using our galleys/caravals to transport them to distant islands. This is much quicker than trying to produce settlers from our core and shipping them to the outskirts of our realm (and it is more efficient as food is never lost to corruption...). 2) Nothing has changed on the tech front in my entire 10 turns. Lizzy is the tech leader with Monarchy and Feudalism. Alex us up Monarchy as well. All the other three are WAY behind (3-4 techs IIRC). It is of no benefit to us to purchase Feudalism yet, so just spend our cash rushing things like harbors, temples, and settlers in our distant cities. 3) We could use a bunch more caravals and might want to try to set them up as "virtual rails (TM)" wherever we can. 4) If Dover ever grows, we have 3 horsemen and a galic swordsman that could capture it (and start our GA. Beware though, Lizzy has a sword on an island we share (I believe the swordsman is standing on a hill just outside our cultural borders right now (he just entered a goody hut))). That is all I can think of at the moment...

I would post a screenie, but our territory is way too spread out to really be able to see anything...

Good luck to the next leader!

JMB

I did not trigger a GA on purpose. I built a few Swordsmen mostly to have something that would impress Hoplites.

As to MM, most of our productive cities can go between 5-8 shields. This means that we often can earn ourselves some 2-3 coins by putting citizens in the ocean instead when we match up the shields needed. With a few cities that would be some 5-6 gpt total. It is a lot of work though. :) Of course, it doesn't really matter if you just rush things.

As to my SHift, it happens when I type in a hurry, then my slow left hand is not up to the task of releasing the SHift key before I have had time to press the next key. It is somewhat sloppy, but turns took a bit longer than I had expected.

I would in addition to JMBs advise, also urge next player to upgrade the galleys whenever possible, as the extra movement on the caravels could come in handy.

Grimjack

Come on, play a few turns, so I can play again this weekend :)

Grimjack

Well, Grimjack, I certainly can't take it... ;) If a few people do pick it up though, I'll probably have a bit of time to grab it at some point...

JMB

Well, screw waiting any longer... I'll play another 10 turns and people like Grimjack and Reagan can pick up the game thereafter.

I hope this isn't going against too many rules (for Open SGs)... If it is, post soon as I am currently playing. If nothing has been posted by the time I finish, I'll post my results.

JMB

This looks very interesting, and I hope that at a later time I myself will be able to say the proud words, "Got it." :) Hopefully I won't inflict too much :smoke:.

650 - I notice I left one city about to riot, and fix that. IBT, Palace expansion.

660 - Not much. I hurry a settler and prepare to declare war on England.

670 - Not much. IBT, the Greeks complete the Hanging Gardens.

680 - Found Lezoux, and rush an archer (rush warrior, change to archer, rush). Lizzy refuses to give up Feudalism, so we declare war. We capture a worker on our first turn. IBT, we lose a spearman, but a Gallic Swordsman wins against a swordsman and we enter our Golden Age. IBT, Palace expansion. The English begin Sun Tzu's and Leo's. Our gpt jumps up 70 or so...

690 - 1 horseman retreats from Dover, and the other dies. Our Gallic swordsman retreats, but our elite horseman wins. Unfortunately, there is still a spear in Dover.

700 - Our elite horseman outside of Dover is incapable of taking the city.

710 to 730 - Not much.

740 - Not much. IBT, one of our outlying cities falls into disorder.

750 - We now have 3 gallic swordsmen outside of Birmingham, and 2 more (with a spear) outside of Brighton. There is a barb warrior on the island where our settler is standing on the iron (I didn't notice him until after I'd unloaded the settler...) Alex now has Theology, so if we are able to get a tech from Lizzy in the near future, we might be able to broker for it.

Well, that was a really pathetic set of turns... :( I hope the next leader is able to do a lot better!

Heh, maybe setting up an open SG where I wouldn't be playing wasn't the greatest idea. :) Reagan, Grimjack, feel free to jump back in now.. apparently there either isn't as much interest as I was expecting, or people are just out and busy doing things other than Civ with the start of summer. :)

Any lurkers that want it, jump right in and go ahead. :goodjob:

T-hawk,

Hopefully you'll be able to play sometime soon... (We should be able to explore the rest of the southern area within the next couple of turns). It must be a bit disappointing to have such a low interest level since you customized the map...

Is there any particular goal we are aiming for in this game? So far we haven't really needed one, but it is about time that we decide on what we want to do. Since research is progressing so slowly, I think we might want to go for a domination or conquest victory...

JMB

I would say that we go for a conquest. Domination could be a bother with all these little tiny islands everywhere.

Got it.
