The 2 gig wall from 32 bit games & Civ 6

Ok, Ill be patient. You are right it, the silence just means they are building hype without having to do anything.

Patience I suppose.

There's no proper way to announce a game. The industry event where this game is likely to be shown in a major blowout to media is a month away.

More specifically whether this game will be 64 or 32 bit probably concerns so few people it just doesn't make sense to put it as a bullet point in their version short tease on the 11th.

So what you see as silence , 2K/Firaxis may not be even aware you are wanting an answer. Or they do and its been answered but the documents are still working its way to publication (imagine magazine lead times) or that they feel like they can announce it later.

If we're sitting on September 20th and they still refuse to let us know key details like this, then I'd have a good reason to get miffed. The game is still far away, relatively speaking.

Funny how there's zero journalism in gaming. Most online "articles" are simply copy/paste that just report exactly what the seller/Firaxis wants to come out. It would be refreshing with a few actually relevant questions like 64bit support and if no answer is given, then just walk out. Then write about the fact that they wouldn't answer... don't be a simple marketing tool at least.
Who's going to care if Firaxis refused to answer that question? There's nothing to read from that. It doesn't suggest Firaxis is hiding something controversial or criminal. I don't think anyone expects the right to the development process of a game, so there's nothing to investigate.

All of which is fun, but about as productive as trying to grab air with your hands -- lots of leaping about, with vigorous hand waving and grasping motions, but not much to show for it.

The whole section of civ VI forum is about grasping air , so what is your point ? :)

Making 32bit game would mean that Recommended system requirements would be 4GB of RAM, like if we are in back in 2008.

There are a lot of 4GB systems out there on the market, I have a feeling minimum will be 4GB . But I have hope recommended will be higher due to the game being 64 bit.

FWIW, a news article I came across says the game will have a solid DX12 backend: http://www.bitsandchips.it/52-english-news/7034-civilization-vi-will-have-a-solid-directx-12-backend

I guess that is promising, tech wise.

Worth pointing out that the article states "According to our sources" without making any mention of the sources or even what type of sources provided that information.

Well, DX12 will run in DX11 mode. In fact there are some video graphic cards that are so highly tuned to DX11 that performance decreases in DX12 mode.

I also note that none of 2K or Take 2 titles are on the wikipedia page entry for upcoming games running in full DX12 mode.

But if it's running DX12 natively, that would mean a separate exe file for Windows 10 than Windows 7/8.

I do hope that a person won't need Windows 10 to run the game. I have heard that dx12 will be a Windows 10 exclusive. :(

dx12 is win10 exclusive because MS wants everyone to get off the old OSs.

but I doubt that firaxis will go all the way with win 10/dx12 exclusive because win 7/8 are still very much in use (unlike 32bit) and there are few dx12 exclusive games right now. dx11 is very likely to still be part of it.

I forgot to mention at the time, but Amazon's entry for Civilization VI lists Windows 7/8 as the platform.

Yes, it's confirmed that DX11.1 is end of DX upgrades for Windows 7 & DX 11.2 is end of DX upgrades for Windows 8.

It will likely be like V which had DX 9 and DX 11 modes (except the modes will be DX11 and DX12).

Based on timing of best guess for when they'd likely have started it's much more likely that it's optimized for DX11 + Windows 8 [latest service pack] and so could use the same .exe file. If you have Windows 10 + DX12 it will still work; it just wouldn't be using any new DX12 features if there's not a separate exe.

Well, yes. That is MS' motivation.

Hopefully, you are right. :)

Oh, ok. Thanks for the info. :)

Does this imply that CivVI will run better on AMD?
If Total War: Warhammer has shown that GCN micro architecture is aging like a good wine, Civilization VI could be able to point out even a better state.
GCN is an AMD-thing, right?

Windows 7? It's like we're back in 2008.

... Kidding! Kidding!

I found this while searching for Civ5 map sizes; Note post #3 citing the size of Civ5 maps were due to memory restrictions.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=466081

I think the 32-bit memory restrictions limiting Civ5 map sizes compared to earlier tiled maps, was not a good point for some fans. There may be extra incentive for Firaxis to go 64 bit for larger maps.
