I'm simply converting units. The only thing I can accept congratulation for is the writting of software tool that convert "automatically" the files.
The screenshot below show 6 of the 292 pictures that make the trapper run animation (and it has only 16 frames). You can see that:
- The Animation itself is on one picture, but with blackground, and some parts of the animation are black also (same palette color and index, so a simple replacement with Magenta does not work).
- The second picture includes the shadow and a kind of overlay to find what is background what is animation in the first picture.
- The size of the pictures is not constant
- They are not centered
- There is no East orientation
- The size is bigger than CivIII.
Imagine the work needed to convert all this into CivIII animation with up to 62 frames!
My little program does this almost automatically : I need about 5 second to generate the storyboard for the trapper. Then, it's manual editing of the palette, and use of Flicster to adjust the speed and make the FLC.
But that's very simple and "stupid" task, I don't think I really deserve congratulation. I didn't make the units.
If you to thank someone, here is the email address of GSC Game Wolrd Company
support@gsc-game.kiev.ua. They made the animation in the first place, then they give me the authorization to convert Cossacks and American Conquest units, and even provide me with their own tool to help me extract bitmaps from their graphic package.
So perhaps a few email to thanks them, tell them how nice you find their units, and perhaps that through my work you discovered their games could be appreciated by them (and make them think they were right to do so, and it could be an incentive for them to do this with latter games).
I've find this very nice of them : when I think of Firaxis that doesn't allow us to use PTW animation, and I compare it with GSC that say "sure, no pb, you can use or graphics however you want, as long as you give us credits"...
