The CFC's Choice Beyond the Sword Civilization Thread

1. Ethopia
2. Khmer
3. Maya
4. Poland
5. Hittites
6. Israel/Hebrew
7. Sumer

Friends, ... What new civilizations do you think should be in BTS?

You get 7 votes (there will be ten in the xp and three - Babylon, Portugal and Netherlands - are more or less confirmed.) Number 1 on your list get 7 points, number 2 gets 6 points, and so on.

This is difficult; I'm trying to reduce my personal biases and make careful choices predicated upon considerations for what Firaxis has done before and what would be most compelling/fun/marketable - CIV is a game first and a historical simulation second. I'm expecting a few we haven't seen before, and we have many respectable candidates, according to diverse criteria... Here it goes:

1) Mayans - a popular civ from before, I believe most players will welcome the return of Mayans in their games :)
2) Sumerians - apparently the oldest civilization of the Middle East dating to before 4000 BCE! If they re-appear in BTS I won't be surprised in the least; I think the Sumerians are worthy for inclusion.
3) Byzantines - not a top choice for me, but there is a good chance they'll re-appear...
4) Ethiopians - for a long time the western world has been quite ignorant and uncaring about the history of African peoples, I believe we've learnt a lot in recent decades and this civ is a very interesting choice to add to our knowledge and enjoyment of the game.
5) Siamese - this new civ would cover a sizable part of the history of cultural development in the southeast corner of Asia. Another civ to use war elephants and build a wealthy (if not protective) culture. I would like to play as them sometime...
6) Sarmatians/Scythians - contemporaries of the Romans, these are a people who dwelled in a large swath of land around the Black Sea and into eastern Europe. As expert horse breeders and riders, they could be quite competitve vs the Mongols! I think they are a good choice for a new civ.
7) Polynesians - the Pacific Islands and all their "mysterious", vibrant cultures are just begging for inclusion somehow, if it wasn't for the isolating effects of geography these peoples could have been extra successful and built a diverse sea spanning empire. CIV is also about "imagine if", so... ;)

There are plenty of other great choices. I think Firaxis is trying to cover a sampling of cultures great and small from all over the globe just to keep the game interesting for a broad audience.

Can't wait for July... :D

PS: sorry for any typos :)

Maya
Ethiopia/Axum/Abyssinia
Siam
Nubia
Khmer/Cambodia
Iroqious
Koori/Aborigine

**Soviets are already in the game, Stalin is a leaderhead
***There is artwork of Sitting Bull for BTS, so I think the Suoix or Lakota are in the game.

Also I would like another Japanese leaderhead since America has 3 already and they have only been a country for 200 years. And we have the oldest ruling monarchy of any country. But in every civ game we only get Ieyasu Tokugawa....

1. Mayans
2. Polish/Lithuanians
3. Hebrews
4. Polynesians
5. Magyars
6. Ethiopia or Kenya/Tanzania area based tribes
7. Assyrians
8. Cree or Inuit

1. Sweden
2. Hebrew/Israel
3. Maya
4. Byzantines
5. Goths

Should be or like to have...

Nubia
Sumer
Maya
Hatti
Hun
Sioux/Iroquois - any Native American tribe
Israel

Here are my choices . . .

1 ) Polynesia! First civilization with deep ocean navigation, that's got to count for something. And we'll see what the string size for the Civ leader name is when they enter in Kamehameha (or Lili'uokalani).

2 ) Olmec. They predated the Maya, and many of the early technology development in the region may actually have come from them.

3 ) Ethiopia. Need more Africans represented.

4 ) Khmer. Southeast Asia needs some representation.

5 ) Israel.

6 ) Hittites. Because the Middle East isn't crowded enough :P .

7 ) Aborigines. Difficult to justify making them a full civilization (they didn't really have anything resembling cities), but they need some representation, even if only in theory.

1. Maya
2. Khmer
3. Sweden
4. Sumerians
5. Austira
6. Hittities
7. Sioux

I think you've got the idea with this. Not sure about the Hittites, though they were fun in Civ3C. I think Argentina or Mexico or South Africa also, assuming there's a 19th C. scenario (Age of Imperialism). And maybe Australia too.

Considering the Post Gunpowder Age game concept...

1) Austria
2) Poland
3) Israel
4) Brazil
5) Hitites
6) Ethiopia
7) Native American
