...should be enhanced I think. Indeed, it'd be interesting to have a new spy/diplomat type, which can be dropped exactly as paratroopers, in enemy cities. So far, it's too easy to block access to your own cities, by surrounding it with stacks of units. With droppable spies, none of your towns is safe so there'll be a permanent tension. You can never be sure not to loose a city. That SHOULD also balance the game in which there are dipo-players and military-players.

Firaxis has already announced that diplomacy in civ 3 will be majorly improved.

As for your ideas on spies, I agree completely.

One thing that i dont really like about diplomats/spies is the bribery thing. I mean, in real life, how much would it cost from Venezuela to bribe NY?

bribing is too easy... i mean in real life, if you tried to bribe some US marines, they would arrest you, and you would be put in jail for life, or...

It would be quite welcome if the AI were a little smarter in civ3, but it'll never achieve the level of human smartness, let alone the level of civfanatical smartness.
If Alpha Centauri gave an indication of what the AI is capable of and diplomacy in civ3 is better, then I'm satisfied.

Bribery is my major tactic, so if they cut it off in Civ3, there will be a nuke wandering in the neighbourhood of Firaxis HQ!

BTW, Az, please be smart, remember what I told you in PM. You know what I mean, right?

I'm with Mongol Horde on this one. Improved diplomacy would be welcome, and has been promised by the creators as well, so I rest assured that I will be more or less satisfied on that front. Paradropping spies would only serve to enhance the effectiveness of spies even more, something which I don't find very appealing. They are damn powerful as it is, they don't need to have the one obstacle to their total domination removed...

You don't see? What about buying all your ennemy cities? And what about a "submission" to your country. Hey that can make sense. If you've played Imperialism (SSI Inc.) this is also a good idea. Beyond the alliance, other civ can ask to be part of your empire. Why not?

But I'm dreaming I think. We're asking Sid too much.

You're dead wrong on that one.
A well-written AI script can easily crash any human opponent (since it can analyze the tons of data civ supplies its players with in real time with accurate estimations for the board reality. creepy.)

all there is in civs 1 and 2 is a specific solid algorithm with varying cheat-rates. they call it Artificial Intelligence for a reason.

I hope that the winning via 'diplomacy' is more complex than buying out your enemies.

The idea of being able to convince civs to join your empire is nice. Maybe acceptance would be based on some combination of your economic/cultural strength, reputation, etc.

Sure, and I didn't mean that. But what about the other ones submitting to YOU?

That was my previous idea.

BTW, fruitly, your reasonning is to be completed I think. The AI can crush the human in games like chess, which is quite different from civ, although it's also a "strategic" game. In chess you have limited rules and limited ressources to manage whereas in Civ, it's more likely to be both macroeconomy AND microeconomy. That's why programming AI to handle all these factor is quite impossible. The micromanagement in chess game gives advantage to the computer AI but not in Civ. It's radically different my friend.

Yes, it is way important to max out Diplomacy in Civ3. Without it, you just couldn't be civilized, now could you. I don't care how complicated they have to make it, Diplomacy is a nessacary evil.
