The Divine Request – Deity Walkthrough

How I get my research varies from game to game. This time I benefited greatly from running scientists early for the academy accompanied by running 2 scientists in addition to the GL. Once I got bureaucracy I gained even more from the academy. Most of my research came from the 4 scientists, bureaucracy and the early academy in Tenochtitlan. Having the willpower to keep running scientists early on and tolerate losing some production usually pays off over time--GPP is incredibly effective for your first GPs.

After the academy you typically bulb with your GS's right? I do something very similar (TGL and bureaucracy) but don't come anywhere near that value. Maybe I just need more commerce in the capitol or a way to keep the slider higher!

Yes, I typically bulb. Sometimes I skip the academy, but that's situational. The capital didn't have extreme commerce available--5 riverside cottages but no commerce resources so it shouldn't be that hard to reproduce in a different game. The science rate wasn't extraordinary--it's doable on most maps.

RE: spiritual trait and CS/pacifism cycles.

I would do it if I obtained philosophy/pacifism earlier in the game, but I got it so late here that it wouldn't have made a big difference. If you lightbulb philosophy early I highly recommend the micro-management cycles, but post-liberalism it doesn't make a big difference thus I didn't bother.

Would you build the shwedagon paya? I lately built it if I have gold and get to aesth early (which I usually do). I see two advantages: Early pacifism and totally ignoring the religions branch of the techtree. So I don't have to trade for (expensive) theology when planning an army buildup.

If I have marble (like in this game) I aim for the GL and the Parthenon instead, but with gold and without marble it's something to consider.

The hardest part of deity is grabbing enough land and hapiness resources in the beginning, as well as getting your GS's soon enough. I can do it, theoretically, but I usually end up winning only a few times out of many tries. No reliable strategy on deity - it's immortal + luck.

But one note: another reason why he techs so quickly is because the AI's can keep up with him, allowing him to trade. I've always said that for equal skill levels, a space victory on immortal is almost always quicker than one on prince.

Rusten one thing I really admire is that looking at the 1390 save you'd only spent 8 hours on the game. That's not a small amount, but compared to a lot of the other great players it's really not much lol.

I've been looking at your games and others trying to improve my play. I feel like I understand the moves you make and why you make them at what time, but when I go to play myself I find that I am doing something wrong as I fall behind on your tech pace, expansion etc. I know I shouldn't be aiming for results of great players, but I get so frustrated and haven't finished a game in ages. Is the best way to learn just to play games in combo with reading threads? I've been reading lots of deity threads, but maybe I need to force myself to play a game in order to actually improve?

Yes. And always check the date on the threads. There are quite a few strategy threads that are so old that the strategy has been shown to be not as good as originally thought. Over the years, more people have had time to tweak them (or outright just dismiss them)

Ha..this thread will eat your brains, but Rusten actually does pop in from time to time. I saw him on the forum just recently.

The save files work! :w00t:
I just kind of assumed they'd be broken by now. That's nice. Pity about the images though.
And I can't believe it's been almost 8 years already. I guess I'm the old veteran now..... :twitch:

I'm not the fastest player around, but I've always done the micromanagement and calculations by rule of thumb/big picture idea which means no spreadsheets or similar so that saves a lot of time. Eventually it's all automatic and you don't even need to think about it anymore.

Best way to improve is to both read threads and to finish games of your own. I remember picking up small tricks/strategies from players before me when I was new. Incorporate these, but don't be afraid to find your own style. I recommend starting a game and forcing yourself to play through it without starting another regardless of what happens. It's a bad habit to abandon games all the time (I did the same) and this worked for me. It's only a good thing if you get a suboptimal start, because then you have to come up with something great to salvage the game, right!? That's how you learn and get good at the game.
