The DYOS Consul (DYOS X: 2007-2009)

I am very hesitant to keep much continuity if at all, if we want new members to join in and contribute to some central plot, then having them discuss everything with this consul, and learning over two dozen characters and interpreting everything correctly (because they'll get flak if they don't) is going to turn everyone away.

I'd also like to suggest more frequent and shorter comics, longer comics take a lot of time to make and that leaves a large window of time where someone can change some element of the plot that will alter what the other person knows. I love CivG's comics, but they are IMO too large and too infrequent.

One thing I did like about this current round is it had a very CivFanatics roots (our avatars), I would hope that we can come up witht something else CivFanatics related in the next iteration.

As a new member, I completely agree.

In defense of the "too large" & Infrequencies:

Infrequent: It takes time for me in Gmod to possition props, cameras, lighting, and reagdolls for the scenery. On top of that bringing the screenshot into Paint Shop Pro to further refine the image before I paste it into a comic. Also, I work full time with an unpredictable scedule. Some weeks I have time while other weeks, I end up only have one day off. I'm sure other DYOSers here have lives outside this thread. I aim for quality, not quanity :).

Too large: I don't want to have a repeat of my older comics in which quote gallons were placed randomly (this confusing the reader) and being placed on the edges (I recall Thorvald had that complaint before I changed my comic format ;)). Also, there are some comics in which I have a lot of creativity in and thought into. I however keep a reasonable length to my comics and spread out the dalouges of the characters instead of crowding a pannel with ballons. Again this is mainly a quality issue.

I cannot place any garrenty that my comics would be less frequent due to factors outside my control such as work, Steam server outage (Prevents me from running steam games like Gmod), writer's block.

The best thing about DYOS, in my opinion, is the ability to poke light-hearted fun at CFC in general. Keeping it CFC-related would be a delight for me.

False alarm. I couldn't book a hotel.

I will say that I am guilty of investing probably an unhealthy amount of thought into my stories. However, this is where some of CivCube's ideas become of interest: we can keep the light fare of the traditional thread and relegate the deeper plotlines to a co-operative/competitive spinoff.

This is a must.

Yeah, our comics will probably all be back soon.

If not, we can always just re-upload the missing ones.

Well, crap. It's been a week since the hacking, and the earlier part of the thread is still filled with Red X's. It looks like we will have to re-upload the missing ones if we want parts of the story to make sense. :(

Nice comic, e350. where exactly is the gem right now?

Lastly, since no one has commented on post #793, I'm assuming you're all fine with it and I'll get to making the comic. Could take a while, as it will involve the Convenient Plot Device giving a plot explanation, kind of like the one Toyoda did in one of Thorvald's comics about 20 pages ago, only longer.

If you want the story to make sense, you have bigger problems then that.

True, but it would make more sense if there weren't red x's at a lot of places- a few are even crucial to the plot (like the one where lord joakim joined the ASC, that's missing)

IIRC, I think I still have the ones I did back Last year still on my account. However I only have some of the comics since I got my new computer on the HDD.

Well, my suggestion here is not that you (or anyone else) dedicate your life to posting comics here or that you take shortcuts in your beautifully animated work or try to cram all your lines into a single frame or anything like; I'm more suggesting that you (and others) might want to break up the plot a bit more finely (IE instead of posting 4 largish comics, post 12 small comics that tell the same amount of story), the benefit here is that each comic doesn't take as long to make and so people aren't stuck with trying to rework a nearly finished large comic because someone else posted a comic beforehand.

I like this thought.

In regard to the Red-X and thread deletions and everything, we might want to actually try backing up the entire thread when the next one rolls around. That way, we'll be ready if disaster strikes.

So what should the theme be for the next thread.

Spoiler :
I hope it's postcount. :mischief:

Always you and your postcounts, you gots the highest of them all :p.

I will assume that we are generally in agreement to start a new thread.

For a brand-spanking new idea, I'm not sure. Idears, anyone? Perfy sez postcount.
The carryover from the Gem adventure is lord_joakim running around Earth smashing stuff up, having become a super-strong monstrosity à la Akira. Again, I would be willing to spin this off into a complementary thread.

Speaking of CivCube, what's your take on the whole thing, master?

Yeah, probably a new thread, and the hacker mentioned by various people can be the bad guy. But not a new thread yet, I have an end comic to post first. :p In the meantime, we should probably look for and re-upload as many missing comics as possible to restore some resemblance of sense to the story.

Anyway, Perfy, how would we back up the thread?

Hopefully, mines would be the last comic in the DYOS (Still working on it, dont close it just yet).

The revenge of the past posts? Not sure how the Postcounts would be able to attack us :o.

The attack of the Evil Clone Moderators?

Hmm, I wonder how the carryover would work while keeping the thread fresh new and smelling of Oxyclean?

There is no point in backing up the DYOS X thread since there are some images that are not there, especialy Kulade's comics :(.

I think the hacker will make a good plot because my ending hints it because it's fresh on our minds right now. And there was the loss of DYOS I-IX into the bargain...

Well the simplest is to have a couple people save all the comics and their locations in the thread onto their hard drive.

Out of curiousity, with the story ending do all the storylines that have currently not advanced still exist?

just curious weither my character will still be killing time in the Diefenbunker or riding around in the Death Fuji

Thats cool, I'll keep him in the bunker until I have a computer capable of actually writing then :p

Or leave it to me. :D I will make reference to the occupation, at least.

HI, BILLY MAYS HERE WITH ZOMG GIANT MONSTER!!

Simple: we keep the main focus on the immediate events, drawing on the previous thread only as the situation requires. Like me and my crazy foreshadowing, it's all a matter of holding back information until absolutely necessary. Keep the story loose enough that it can be understood with little-to-no knowledge of the past arc.
