The Emperor Series #02: Washington

Another update. It just happens to be 1080 AD update, just like the Cathy game. And in that game, 1080 AD save was the turning point in the game. I am not sure if this game ends up being that way, but we shall see:

Spoiler :
First up, I spent my Great Engineer to build the Great Library instantly in Atlanta, my GP Farm. On Turn 140 @ 600 AD, the most coveted wonder was built:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0000-3.jpg

I set my research path to Paper, and planned to use the next Great Scientist to partial bulb Education. But then, my plan changed later on.

Also on this turn, I made a tech trade with Qin:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0001-3.jpg

This wasn't exactly a fancy trade by any means, but Qin was the only one who did not have Meditation. I was far from hitting the limit on "We Fear You Are Becoming Too Advanced" yet, so I made the deal and got a small change of gold on top of it.

On Turn 141 @ 620 AD, the Statue of Zeus was built somewhere.

Shortly, my 1st Great Scientist was born:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0002-3.jpg

Paper came right after it:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0003-2.jpg

I held him for a turn while Paper was finished, because my initial plan was to use him to partially bulb Education. But then I changed my mind. I had NO academies in any of my cities whatsoever, which was rather pathetic. So I changed my mind, and decided to use him to build an academy in Washington instead. That shaved off 2 turns of research into Education.

Meanwhile, Qin declared war on Isabella, his hated heathen:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0004-2.jpg

In the meantime, I went to see Justinian:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0005-2.jpg

I was needing some gold to fund my deficit research for Education at this point, and Justinian just happened to be sitting with good chunk of cash. Feudalism is on path to Guilds, so it isn't all that bad. I already had the Great Library, so Literature was not worth keeping to myself, and a couple of other AI already had Civil Service by this point, so I thought I got a good deal.

And apparently, I didn't get any "You Have Traded With Our Worst Enemy!" diplo demerit from Genghis. I guess the deal was as fair to both sides as it could get to avoid that penalty, according to Nick Carpathia? ^_^

Next up was Qin:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0006-2.jpg

Again, he,Izzy, and Genghis were the only one lacking Aesthetics at this point, if my memory serves me correctly. Hunting is pretty useless for me, but then again, I might as well get it since getting only 80 gold for Aesthetics is a highway robbery. Even then, I got a fair trade diplo bonus with Qin for this transaction.

On the following turn, I went to see Izzy:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0007-2.jpg

Now that I traded Aesthetics to Qin last turn, Izzy was the one without Aesthetics that had at least something to trade. Genghis was even more backwards but had nothing available to trade. And since I now have Hunting, why not get Archery on top of the 70 gold? And this also gave me the fair trade diplo bonus with Izzy. But it won't take long for her to get very upset at me, as you will see.

Now at this point, Qin and Izzy were fighting a holy war of religious proportions. And guess who joined in the fight?

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0008-2.jpg

Louis, Qin's Islamic brother in faith, decided to join in and made it a dog pile war against Izzy. She apparently has no friends other than Giggles who is on another continent. And things will get a lot worse for her soon.

On the following turn, Qin asked me to join in the dog pile war:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0009-2.jpg

I declined since I wasn't sure whether I wanted to befriend Izzy. It's not like she is completely useless for befriending since she isn't the only Christian. However, now that I think about, I could have gotten at least a temporary diplo bonus from Qin for accepting. But then again, it ended up not mattering much at all, as you will see.

Another turn passed, and I saw that Giggles and Justinian were willing to trade their maps. So I went to see Giggles first:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0010-2.jpg

Map for map. And he didn't have much knowledge of the other AI's location. And this significantly lowered the price that Justinian was asking for his map:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0011-2.jpg

Before getting map from Giggles, it was like another 95 gold on top of it all. This should help reveal more AI cities and hopefully get me more profitable trade routes in my cities.

On Turn 149 @ 780 AD, a religion finally spread to one of my cities:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0012-2.jpg

It just happens to be that the religion was Islam, the Apostolic Palace religion, practiced by Qin and Louis. I declined to convert immediately, because I wasn't yet sure at the time whether it might be beneficial to me or not. Another reason was that I highly suspected that either Qin or Louis would come knocking on my door and ask me to convert. Doing that will earn me some diplo bonus, so I waited.

In the meantime, I settled what would most likely be the final city I will settle on my continent:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0013-2.jpg

GAH! Why does that sheep have to be on that particular tile? Well, I figured grabbing as many resources as I can was more important, so I decided to settle here. This effectively got me to 9 cities, in which all of them except the capital ended up being coastal cities. I am rather glad I got the Great Lighthouse! ^_^

A turn passed, and what do you know? Qin did come knocking on my door:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0014-1.jpg

Alright... I paused for a bit to think, and decided to convert. I was stupidly running Organized Religion without a state religion, so this would help. My next door neighbor Genghis isn't the kind of guy that cares so much about religion and he is on another continent. I am getting along rather well with all others except for Izzy anyway, so I took a gamble. And I think it all worked out okay in the end.

On Turn 151 @ 820 AD, Gilgamesh completed the Chichen Itza:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0015-1.jpg

4 turns later on Turn 155 @ 900 AD, I finished Education:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0016-1.jpg

I probably would have gotten it a few turns earlier if I used the 1st Great Scientist to partial bulb it, but I think going with the academy was the right decision in the long run. I think I could have gotten this much earlier if I did things a lot better, but still, this gives me a very good shot at getting Liberalism around 1000 AD.

Anyways, Philosophy was selected for the next tech. I was still a bit ways off from getting another Great Scientist at this point, and this tech was the only tech that I need to get to Liberalism. Louis already had Philosophy at this point, but of course, he wouldn't trade it!

Meanwhile, Atlanta, the GP Farm, was struggling as ever to try to finish the National Epic. I was actually building cheap buildings and units costing 35 to 40 hammers to whip them and apply the overflow into the National Epic. But it was at this point that I was given the option to use the whip... a whopping 4-pop whip at that! And I decided to do it because this city had so much food that it will grow this population right back in a very short time anyway.

I should have taken a screen shot of this... oh well.

On Turn 157 @ 940 AD, the 1st Apostolic Palace proposal was made:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0017-1.jpg

I only had like 12 votes so I was sure that my votes wouldn't really matter that much. Judging by the diplo situations and number of votes, I knew that this resolution would most very likely pass with flying colors. Since Izzy was falling behind in tech and had been nasty to me the whole game, I decided to support the resolution.

Right after that, Izzy came to me and asked for help. But I wasn't sure what help she needed. I think the game was glitching at this point, or maybe it was because the resolution passed? That would have meant that I couldn't conduct any transactions with her anyway.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0018-1.jpg

It wasn't going to matter if I decide to give her whatever help it is she wanted. I refused. And right after that, the outcome of the proposal was rather too crystal clear:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0019-1.jpg

A unanimous decision to stop trading with Izzy. At least Giggles is still her friend.

On Turn 160 @ exactly 1000 AD, I finished Philosophy:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0020-1.jpg

Of course, I chose Liberalism for my next tech. And very conveniently or not, the 2nd Great Scientist popped from Atlanta. Nice timing dude! I decided to use him to build another academy, this time in Atlanta itself.

Also on this turn, Louis made peace with Izzy. Now when is that war between Justinian and Genghis ever going to end by the way? They've been fighting for centuries!!

Anyways, speaking of Genghis, I contacted him for a trade:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0021-1.jpg

Metal Casting have been unavailable for trade for a while, but a couple of turns prior, a few AI decided it was worth making it available for trade. But for most of them, I only had Paper to trade for, and it was my monopoly tech. I wasn't willing to help out the AI in that regard anyway. Genghis on the other hand, is so far backwards that it was worthwhile to make this trade with him and collect some chunk of cash on top of it all.

On the following turn, Justinian must have been quite disturbed about that trade I made with Genghis, that he contacted me:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0022-1.jpg

Uh... no thanks. I almost never give into demands of this type, and I don't want to anger the Mongolian. He is actually pleased with me even though I am running a different religion. Can't you guys get along? You guys are both Confucian for Christ's sakes! Well actually, DON'T get along please and keep on fighting! ^_^

Anyways, on the same turn, I contacted Louis:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0023-1.jpg

My personal and general feeling toward Louis the AI has not changed one bit, but at least in this game, his attitude has shifted significantly since I converted to Islam. I saw that he happened to be the only AI without Metal Casting. So before he trades for it, or researches it himself, which he would surely do, I decided to make this trade and pry a tech and a chunk of cash out of him.

A few turns passed, and on Turn 167 @ 1070 AD, I got to the point where I was only 37 beakers away from finishing Liberalism:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0024-1.jpg

I switched research to Machinery, since I was way ahead in the Liberalism race, so I could divert my research elsewhere until another AI get Education, which I assume will take quite a while.

On a side note, Izzy and Qin made peace.

So here we are on Turn 168 @ 1080 AD, for my report:

Map of the South: All the cities have been settled. The one thing I notice here is that I have been bad at not using up all those forests. I meant to have them saved to chop out universities in these cities, but they still ended up quite preserved like this. Philadelphia was the only city with Islam, and it's now pumping out missionaries thanks to running Organized Religion that does not require a monastery to build missionaries. I admit I should have done a lot better in this regard, and consider this a lesson well learned.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0025-1.jpg

Map of the North: New York and Washington have grown relatively big, and Atlanta has survived multiple rounds of merciless whipping, including that infamous 4-pop whip that I made to finish the National Epic. Workers are laying out workshops since all tiles have been pretty much improved and roaded. Washington is, so far, the only decent city with capable hammer production at this point, and I need to work on changing that very soon.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0026-1.jpg

Map of the Known World:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0027-1.jpg

Diplo Situation: Justinian and Genghis are STILL fighting! I don't know exactly what's going on in that war, but I don't think there has been any cities that exchanged hands. It is a long stalemate and neither side wants to end the fighting it seems. I kinda like it that way. ^_^ Izzy is hated by just about everyone except for Giggles who adores her, but is located on another continent. As for me, I am rather getting along with Louis and Qin, who is now friendly with me. Even Genghis is still at pleased with me, which is quite nice.

Also of note, is that nobody is trading with Izzy except for Giggles, and that Qin and Giggles have actually managed not to meet each other yet, which is quite amazing.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0028-1.jpg

Tech Situation: I have a monopoly on Paper, which clearly explains the Liberalism race situation. ^_^ Qin is sitting with rather juicy amount of cash in his pocket, but I am still reluctant to trade Paper away. I don't really need Theology, since I don't plan on running Theocracy or building any of the wonders that it enables. Theocracy is also a dead end tech at this point, so only Machinery is of interest, but I am only 1 turn away from it anyway, so it is probably not worth it.

Izzy and Genghis have fallen far behind in techs, while Giggles is just ahead of those two. None of these 3 even have Civil Service yet. I thought about selling it for some chunk of cash, but getting less than 100 gold for it is a rip off!

Justinian and the Islamic duo in Qin and Louis are doing much better though.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0029-1.jpg

So here I conclude for the afternoon. I am planning on finishing Machinery and then probably to Guilds. After that, I am not sure yet. Since I still have some time until another AI gets close to Liberalism, I need to think about which tech I want to take as a freebie.

I could just finish Liberalism now, take Nationalism from it, and finish the Taj Mahal before someone like Louis decides to build it and take away my free Golden Age. Other options include going for Steel, which means I need to get Engineering and Gunpowder, as well as Chemistry. Or I could go for Rifling by getting Banking through Guilds, and then Printing Press and Replaceable Parts, on top of Gunpowder. Astronomy is not very important on this map due to the fact that I am getting intercontinental trades with all other AI (except for Izzy) without it.

Other goals include finishing at least 6 universities to build the Oxford, which will be enhanced by stone, as well as a few forges in some cities as well. The most important thing right now though, is to spread Islam to all of my cities so that I can utilize the Organized Religion civic better and be able to build religious buildings for extra hammer bonus. I've been whipping quite a bit, but there has to come a time where I switch to Caste System so that I can produce more Great People and make the workshop tiles more viable. And yes, chop out those trees in the south! ^_^

One other side note: I think I can still bribe Genghis into converting to Islam. It might be worth doing it, but I am not sure. Maybe he might even do it for free, since he is pleased with me. That would really make Justinian hate him even more. ^_^

Any comments, suggestions, criticisms, questions, etc are appreciated!

Upto T100
Spoiler :

Moved the warrior SE, and seeing nothing of interest opted to SIP. Seeing other games, SW looks like it would have been a stronger move to settle. As it was quickly apparent that we were alone on an island I decided to quickly try to get a 2nd city up to go for TGL. After finding stone to the South of the island I also decided to shoot for the Pyramids too, as the land looked too poor to cottage to me.

Build Order: worker > warrior > warrior > settler > worker > worker > warrior > settler > settler > worker > pyramids.

Research: mining > BW > mysticim > sailing > masonry > the wheel > pottery > writing > alphabet.

I was successful in getting both the early wonders I played for, and probably wouldn't have managed the game without them.

Again I forgot to take many screen shots. I do have a provisional dot map which I largely stuck to. I think the only changes I made was that the 'food' city to the SE was settled 1E when I realised it wasn't coastal, and I could never bring myself to settle the 'awful city'.

Spoiler :

By 50BC I realise I'd missed the 100 turn limit as the Great Library was BIADL. I had been hoping to snag that with the GE from the Pyramids, but settled for the Parnetheon which may actually have been a better bet with the high number of specialists I Was running.

1886 UN Diplomation
Spoiler :
I didn't keep detailed notes of the rest of the game, but beelined astonomy which I was able to grab pretty early. I'd expected that to put me out the lib race but the tech rate was so slow I was able to get that too nabbing scientific method on the way.

Not wanting to delay too long, I went to war against Ghengis with Maces/trebs taking his 2 best cities before he capitulated to Justinian :(. Held off a phoney war with Louis before slamming into Izzy with rifles and cannons as she didn't even have gunpowder. Once I had the shrined city of Madrid I took peace and turned my army on China, vassaling them too.

I wasn't sure how to proceed from there as it looked like a straight decision between taking on Giggles or Louis. However they both went into WHEOOHRN and decalred on Justinian. I couldn't turn down a dogpile especially as Justinian was a land target, so waded in with upgraded infantry/artillary. Once Ghengis was wiped out Justinian agreed to vassal.

At around this point Giggles built the UN, and not fancying the drag of an intercontinental invasion, I took diplo from the UN. I don't know about other players, but large scale late game industrial wars take too long on my machine to be enjoyable generally.
Spoiler :

In summary, not the best score but I was just glad to win the game. Thats the first game I have on without building a single cottage, and trade route income was definately a major element of the win here. Thats 2 diplomation wins in a row in this series, so I'll try to go for something different in the next game.

Right, I'm going to get started on the Asoka game asap with a little bit more dedication to timely reports + screenshots! Any feedback would be welcome.

Seems to be a solid lead, just have to decide how to win. With AIs all on separate continents I could easily see you rolling over everyone with cannons+whatever. Otherwise just keep cranking to space.

Keep complaining about lack of hammers, but doesn't look like you built Moai despite having stone and mostly coastal.

Looks like there is room for a filler city in the south, 2N of spice, although it wouldn't be coastal.
