The EU (Sheeps NES)

So we should or shouldn't introduce something in the UNSC? I'm confused...

Depends on what school of thought you are from but most NPCs are saying you should.

Luxembourg requests that Belgium introduces Resolution 5a in the UNSC.

The Kingdom of Belguim thinks this would be better handled by a permament member and thus declines the opportunity.

OOC: Just sticking up for Benelux. :p

Luxembourg urges the UK or France to introduce Resolution 5a in the UNSC immedidately.

The United Kingdom will be glad to put forth this to the UNSC.

Edit: Sheep has already posted it and therefore I don't have to.

Regardless of our friendly relations with the Turkish government, we still do not see the validity in the inclusion of Turkey into the EUROPEAN union.

Had we wished to include Turkey, then we would have renamed the Union. Turkey is in no way a European nation, and should not be allowed within our Union.

Turkey is curious in this matter, and would like to see EU come up with a unique and coherent definition of what is European. We don't see how a geographic division arbitrarily applied by some ancient Greeks 3000 years ago can reasonably be claimed to govern international politics in the era of globalization.

Germany does not wish to get into a debate over what makes one European. We fear it will lead down a path we do not wish to tread.

However as Turkey is in the Eurovision song contest they must be european, no one would willfully subject themselves to that if they could avoid it.

Article 301 of Turkish penal code

The article was modified as follows (additions in bold)

1.A person who publicly denigrates Turkishnesscitizenry, the Republic or the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, shall be punishable by imprisonment of between six months and three years, changeable to monetary penalty.
2.A person who publicly denigrates the Government of the Republic of Turkey, the judicial institutions of the State, the military or security organizations shall be punishable by imprisonment of between six months and two years.
3.In cases where aforementioned denigration of Turkishness is committed by a Turkish citizen in another country the punishment shall be increased by one third.
4.Expressions of thought intended to criticize shall not constitute a crime. Only words, phrases, and gestures, which also constitute an insult when used alone, can be the cause of invoking this law.

Reasons for modification:

1- It was too vague a definition for being a criminal law.

2- It was constantly being abused by nationalist prosecutors in irrelevant cases, such as prosecution of the two popular authors and one journalist in 2006. Thankfully all such cases have been dismissed in the past by judges who know how to see through malintent or nationalistic zeal.

3- It was redundent, because any citizen, including the same nationalist prosecutors, can sue people within the framework of personal insult laws, if they feel personally insulted through use of decent language as they argued.

4- It was a black spot on our country's democratic foundation.

After a trial period of one year, this law will be rediscussed in the parliament.

No, he hasn't. What do you mean?

Can you or Panda please post it?

France will stand firm in her position with regards to Turkish membership.

Turkey is not a European nation just as Algeria and Morrocco are not European nations. They are close in proximity, but they are not European. Most of Europe is in agreement with this (please note that popular opinion is decidedly AGAINST Turkish membership, and that most of the smaller countries are against it aswell).

I will be gone over the weekend. Sheep has authorized that I make a new EU thread after the update (I'm going to be President anyways, and this thread is just a little unorganized). From then on we can use that thread.

OOC: Is secretly pleased.

Turkey is not trying to persuade France into anything. We are pointing out that: since EU regulations do not define what is European and also do not name geography as a membership prerequisite, not showing any reason other than Turkey's alleged non-Europeanness for not wanting it in the union only portrays France as prejudicial or worse. We are simply trying to understand how the citizens of one of our allies think here.

To European Union and Parliament
From the European Space Agency

It is with great pleasure that with the increased funding several nations have included in their budgets that we are in the process of planning a new generation of missions. This will included manned missions and such we seek approval to proceed.

Germany gives it approval for the ESA to procede. We urge all other nations to let their thoughts be known as soon as possible so we can move ahead with these plans.

OOC: Tyrion, see my PM.

Luxembourg will support the ESA. We suggest looking into the possibility of building a space elevator, which is on the cutting edge of technological research.

OOC2: CAN A UNSC MEMBER PLEASE POST THE DAMN RESOLUTION?????

The UK is in full support of the ESA and there new missions. However I am a believer in something called multitasking. We can work on the constitution and the ESA. The EU can not survive with tunnel vision and we can not have a one track mind.

Germany is in agreement with the UK, we are doing many a thing at once.
