The Expanded Medal Play Series of GOTM

Tourney is easy like...

Goal: Space Race

Scoring system...

If you get the fastest space race victory you win.

Everyone else gets their score as a percentage of the winners...

No Space Race = No Freaking chance...

There, that wasn't so hard was it ;)

So where do I submit the game for inclusion in the EMP?

From my understanding, submit the game as per normal for a GOTM. If you meet the targeted victory condition, you will be entered automatically into the medal play series. Simple as that.

@Moonsinger:

The Medal Play concept is actually very simple. Each game in the season has a target victory condition. Try to complete the targeted victory condition in the fastest possible time. Each season will have up to 5 or 6 games, and your best 3 games that qualify will be combined to give you a final "score". Top 3 finishers in each division get a medal (gold, silver & bronze). There are 5 divisions based upon which games you choose to play (i.e. open, conquest or predator).

Since some games will be Medal Play only games, and others will be Medal Play AND GOTM, I plan on not going for the targeted victory conditions for the combined games. More chance to get an award of some kind...

Are you milking this month? I'm going for it.

I thought you said that "the targeted victory condition in the fastest possible time". Therefore, milking won't give you the fastest posssible time.

Anyway, I was planning for a green milk on the GOTM21 (play all the way to 2050AD) because I haven't done that in a long time and because I thought that no one want to milk nowadays (just want to keep the milking spirit alive). However, now that I know you will be milking this month, the milking spirit is safe and alive; therefore, I won't be milking this month. Have fun on the dairy farm and I hope the cow award will be yours!

Exactly! I want to play games that are a combination Medal Play / GOTM only as GOTM (i.e. milking or any victory type I choose), and will play the extra games for Medal Play (the ones released in the middle of the month) as Medal Play games. Make sense? The reason is that I enjoy both styles of play and want to retain both playing styles competitively.

In any case, I am shooting for the cow award this month. Who knows, maybe even a top ten finish. Things are going pretty well so far.

Just make sure you win those 3 medal games by the correct victory condition. If you accidently trigger a Domination win, when you were going for a Conquest win, then you will only have 2 of the 3 required games to submit and there goes your ranking for the 4 months of playing.

Please avoid commenting on the nature of current games in any way. Thanks. - Aeson

Damn !!!! I made 100 posts without getting into trouble and now this.:splat: I don't even know what I wrote before, but I guess it was something about the current game. I will now have to forever live in disgrace. Oh well, I will try to behave in the future.

So I guess most people will probably shoot for the Spaceship in the GOTM21. I wish I have seen this thread a week ago so that I could plan for the 20K Culture or something that no one shooting for.;)

This is exactly my point I made earlier in the thread that has not been commented on. Isn't the GOTM going to see an altered trend of similar victory conditions making medals for different conditions rarer than before? I think it is quite possible that we may see a victory condition without a submission on occasion if a large percentage of players compete w/ the medal series in mind.

Personally, if Space Ship makes sense then sure, I will take it, but generally I feel like my game could really stand out if I don't participate in the medal (spaceship) series. One good thing is that all the spaceshippers will have many games to compare between when the month is over!

Certainly the medal play will cause shifts in the victory conditions people choose to play in the GOTM's. I think it mostly won't affect the medal winners, as 'top' players tend to be the ones who have the most free time to put into their games, and thus can be the ones who are able to play all 6 games instead of just the GOTM's. The Cultural medals may be the exception though.

Already the Cultural victories are mostly ignored by GOTM players from month to month, and hopefully the games directed towards them will help give those type of games a boost in player interest. I think it's partially a perception that Cultural victories don't score as well as the other types in the Jason scoring system. With a large number of players directing their focus towards Cultural victories in certain months, that perception should change.

---------------

Discussion of what victory type a player will be pursuing is alright in the pre-game discussion threads. As noted in those threads, once you've started your game, please refrain from making comments about your game in any thread other than the proper spoilers.

I think it's been shown that cultural victories, or spaceship victories, don't have to generate low Jason scores. But I also think that a player who's only interested in getting the fastest possible spaceship victory, or cultural victory, will as a consequence have a low Jason score. To get a high Jason score, you have to pursue conquest/domination in parallel with your other goals. It's not that this can't be done, but it may seem superfluous to many people. If I'm going to go to all of the trouble to conquer most of the world, I might as well just accept the domination victory and be done with it. Conversely, if I'm going to play a longer game leading to a spaceship victory, I might just want to leave the rest of the world alone, and not go through the time-consuming process of conquering everyone, and have more time for other Civ games.

There will be at least a few players trying to qualify their GOTM's as Medal Play games while still maintaining a very high Jason score so as to compete for the GOTM medals. It should result in very high Jason scores for the 'condition of the month' each and every month, along with displaying how a player can best combine the 'fastest finish' and 'highest scoring' gamestyles into a more complete approach to the game.

I think there will be a few. It' s just unfortunate that many players won't, thus limiting the pool of comparisons---the large base for comparisons is, imho, the strongest aspect of GOTM.

In principle, I'd like to go for both a fast spaceship and a high Jason score, but in practice, I doubt I'll have time.
