The Expanded Medal Play Series of GOTM

Hmm, I was boldly planning for domination with the greeks this time...but now I might revise my plans. As scientific and commercial we can be, no WILL be researching powerhouses in time, so a spacerace win is very possible.
Seeing my only 2 results in GOTM this far I have tried to change my builder style to a more warring style player.
Gotm19 showed me some effects how far behind the meek builder comes compared to the great warmongers out there (place 171 or something) :)
Gotm20 I tried to go to war much earlier and then sat back after taking everyone but Zulu....and then I sat back and went for diplo in 1430. Just can't to learn how to fight all the way...I think it was SirPleb that said something about going ALL the way, which made me want to improve in the warmongering style this time.

So now comes the announcement about the medal plays and spacerace. It's a great idea, but simply trashes my plans of "war all the way". I really don't to know what to do now, perhaps I will let my scouts decide for me. If the land around is good enough for research I go back to my lazy builder style...or if we are locked on a smallish island, go out and conquer?
I don't know, my head hurts...decisions, decisions!

I like the idea of the new medal play series tho and I'm looking forward to participate...if I start with this particular gotm, I don't know.

Can you submit any Conquest, Open or predator game for the medal play series? or is it limited to predator?

The Medal Play series will designate a different victory condition each month--this month it is Spaceship. ONLY Spaceship wins will be counted for the Medal Play series, BUT Conquest, Open and Predator games are all eligible!

To be ranked at the end of the cycle of 6 Medal Play games (5 for this starting cycle) you need to have submitted at LEAST 3 games, and if you submit more your best three count.

The classes that you play in your games determine which division of the Medal Play you can win a medal in. Those who submit all Predator games will be in the 'Leader' division, those with all Conquest Games in the 'Conscript' division and different mixes of them result in Elite, Veteran and Regular divisions.

Go here for the full details.

<edit> Fixed typo on number of games in the cycle pointed out by Melifluous.

It's like staring into one of those 3-d pictures. Once you focus correctly, it all makes sense. That graph finally makes sense to me. I still have some questions though.

If we play the game, say all the season 5 games, do we submit them all, even if we lose or win by the wrong victory condition?

I know part of this answer is Yes to the GOTM ones since they will count for points no matter what,

so I guess my real question is -

Do I submit my medal game if I lose or don't achieve the correct victory condition or do I just spit on it and flush it down the toilet and pretend I never played it? :p

I think I can answer this one...

Send all your games in...

It may well be that your loss or wrong victory win, is still high scoring in relation to how everybody else did.

Also if you lose all 5 then it will still be your top 3 that count ;)

Can someone post a little bit more information about how the scoring will work? If I win game 5-1 with a space race in 1520ad, and game 5-3 with a conquest in 1050ad, and game 5-4 with a diplomatic victory in 1740ad, and game 5-5 with a 20k culture victory in 2017ad, how do you determine which are the three "best"?

I guess it has to be relative to the other players, somehow, but I don't exactly see how this will work.

DaviddesJ,

Not sure how it'll be now, but during the old tournament you got a score based on your civ score (10%) and how fast you finished (90%). The finishing score was based on how fast the #1 player was. They got 100. then #2 got a ratio of how far behind they were to #1 (I think turns based). If you look at the results of some of earlier tournaments you'll see one player with 100 and the others at lesser numbers.

There is a scoring page linked on the tournament page. Of course this is the old world. I'm betting on a more Jason score ranking, which is also quickest based score (why re-invent the wheel :) )

Cheers and see you in the spoilers,

When in that situation (or trying to milk) I try to build UN in a new size 1 city with a Great Leader and then abandon it. Erases the worry over winning (or losing) a UN vote.

In the "old tournament" the score was (very roughly) made up of a combination of finish date and Firaxis score, But this was weighted so that the finish date was roughly 90% (IIRC) of the total awarded score.
This score was converted into a percentage of the Best submitted score for both date and Firaxis score.

So if the best date was turn 200 and the best score was 10000 (not necessarily the same player), and if you finish on turn 220 with a score of 9000 then your score would be (100-(10 * 10 + 10)/11)% = 90%

Having said that I would imagine that cracker will feel that the present GOTM (Jason) scoring system is more robust (and fairer and simpler) and will probably just use that. The Jason curve has a theoretical best score and a submitted games percentage of that could be used to determine the three best games.

If he does that however I would be a little concerned. I have been doing a little statistical work on this lately, for Karasu (who probably thinks I have forgotten all about it). For most games the "average" Jason score for a submitted game is around 20% of theoretical best. But for one game (GOTM17-Carthage) the average jumped to over 40%. I am trying to discover why this would happen but am at a loss at the moment, though I suspect it has something to do with archipeligo maps.

I would favour a system that is based on the Jason system expressed as a proportion of the best submitted game, though this too has an obvious drawback.

So I guess that what I am trying to say is, I don't know but would like to. :crazyeye:

Since the Tournament has relied that heavy on Fast wins I would have thought that the Medal Play would do that too.
I would feel reasonable that the score would be based 90% on finish date with a score given in relation to the Jason score best date and 10% on Firaxis base points (without the victory bonus) in relation to the Jason best score.

For example if SS Victory Jason best date is turn 240 and Jason best score is 14,000 my turn 300 victory with a 5000 base score would mean that I have 80% of best date 1/(300/240) and 36% of best score 5,000/14,000. With a 90%/10% weight this would mean I have a 75.6% of max score or 756 points.

I thought the expanded medal play would also be more geared towards the tournament's scoring, too. For those who want to go for 'all-out' fast finish, they can play towards the medal play series, and for those who like more of a balance betweeen speed and score, there is the Jason score, that most of the other rankings are based on.

If you play towards the Jason score, you should still do good in the medal play series, but medal play might favor (I don't know for sure which scoring method will be used) the 'super-fast' finishes more so than the Jason score does.

I would like it better that way, Bamspeedy. The GOTM is for how high you can score, Tourney is for how quickly you can finish. I think 10% Jason score thrown into the Tourney score would balance it a little more.

I will certainly be going for the Medal Play series this game.

Playing the same game for fast victory can easily be accomplished and then we will use the existing tournament score modification system to rank all the games that meet the designated victory condition for the torunament game.

From this statement and the explanation on the GOTM pages, it appears that the old tourney scoring system will remain in place at least for season 5. So, for example, if you have a space race victory on GOTM 21 (July), then you will have a jason score assigned for the GOTM results, AND you will get a Tourney score for the Medal Play results.

A quick Tourney scoring lesson:

Turns ratio = (540-your turns to victory) / (540-best finish)
Score ratio = (your score) / (best score)
Overall ratio = ((10*turns ratio)+score ratio) / 11

The score ratio takes BASE score into account only. If you do not achieve a victory, or you achieve the WRONG victory type, then your overall ratio = (score ratio / 11).

I know it's not really relevant to the thread, but couldn't you just build the UN and not call a vote rather than build it and destroy it? The only reason you would not want to keep it would be if you were fearful of losing that city to another civ.

Just curious...

How would I know (unless I read this thread), that the medal play victory condition for game 5-1 was Spaceship?

For one thing, it's written in bright red letters with the heading "SPECIAL MEDAL PLAY NOTE" at the very top of the GOTM21 description page.

That's a good way to know. Thanks! :p

So I guess most people will probably shoot for the Spaceship in the GOTM21. I wish I have seen this thread a week ago so that I could plan for the 20K Culture or something that no one shooting for.;) Anyway, I have no idea how these Medal Play Series work. Yes, I have read the rule but I don't really understand what it means.:( My head is 100% full at the moment and I can't put any more stuffs into it.:(
