The Gang of Four - FRFR Redux

Sure, take it.

Gorm breathes fire all over Persia.

Nice to see you back in the game.

I've been waiting for that.

@Stapel
Good to have you back. Cruise the 850 in Persia.

@the leadership:
Do we upgrade to 1.22, or whatever it is?

We will not upgrade...

Rumours go there are problems when loading a game, started in 1.15, into 1.20.

1.22 is new to me.

Patch for upgrade released last night. Reportedly fixes problem with backward compatibility and some other things

Yea. When a patch is delayed for over 2 months for god knows why, then 2 days after it's released they drop another patch......... you know that's trouble.

Stick to 1.15 for awhile. ;)

Glad to see you back stapel, just in time to snag some turns!:D

Playing..

I completely lost track on where we still can build&chop forrests....

You aren't the only one, I know where I've planted/chopped, and a couple other places. But other then that it seems to be pot luck.:(

I am done guys. Couldn't upload yesterday morning, due to server problems at cfc.

Pre Turn; 1300 AD; MM-ing our entertainers to tax-men. I give the Portuguese iron and 250 gold. they give us Metallurgy and printing press. Why wasn't Antioch razed? It is on a terrible spot, I think.

Turn 1; 1305 AD; forrest building and pillaging.
Turn 2; 1310 AD; Capture Hamadan
Turn 3; 1315 AD; Capture Zohak. The Persians have knights. That's very annoying with so few defense. We will give the Persians a final blow soon!
Turn 4; 1320 AD; Not much. Some pillaging :) .
Turn 5; 1325 AD; We raze Ergili.
Turn 6; 1330 aD; We capture Istakhr.
Turn 7; 1335 AD; we capture Jinjan. No more Persians on the main Persian island!
Turn 8; 1340 AD; Not much
Turn 9; 1345 AD; We kand on the eatern island
Turn 10; 1350 AD; We capture 2 cities on the eastern island:

Got it, pending leadership validation.

:goodjob: way to 'zerk Xerxe.

Nice work Stapel! So what's next? Probably need to consolidate, clean up any improvements that might be out there, and settle a few spots. I'm thinking our next target should be the Babylonians.

Welcome back

1350
After a long holiday, spent in the Virgin Islands, as far from frosty Scandanavia as he could get, Bede returns to steer the ship of state. In his initial voyage through the greatly expanded realm, he is reminded once gain of the power of the Berserk warriors forming the backbone of the victorious multitudes.

In his visits to each city he carefully assesses the town's prospects and population. Towns without harbors are told to build one and the weakest citizen in each town is sacrificed to placate the sea gods who waxed wroth at being ignored. In cities with harbors but corrupt officials the most corrupt official is executed to support the building of a Courthouse dedicated to the sanctity of contracts. Inland cities of no value to the seafaring Vikings are told to build workers or settlers and then to remove their goods and chattels to the nearest coast as the land is now sacred to the sprites of the fields and forests.

In places where the previous inhabitants had defaced the landscape the troops take the opportunity of a momentary period of peace to return the landscape to a pristine condition.

A brief conference with Hammurabi, our ally against the Dutch, shows that the alliance is ending and Bede elects not to renew it and seek peace with the Dutch. Hammurabi the greedy offers to sell us Dyes for 50gpt but the canny Bede refuses the offer as spending that sum directly from the bulging coffers would ignite fireworks in the native towns. The entanglement of trade with Babylon just isn't worth it. Enthralled by the idea of massive fireworks dispays to celebrate his return from holiday Bede orders the treasurer to spend the coins and make sure the displays are big ones or he will sleep with the fishes.

Bede is entranced by the great hoard of coins in our treasury and dreams of how to spend it as our mighty military costs us nothing and the luxuries imported to the home island from our far flung outposts are making the citiznery obscenely content. Thinking that the more gold the better, Bede considers spending 1400 (self research) of over 4000 on the study of high finance but returns to his senses when he calculates the real cost.

Wee Willie of the Netherbits will sign a Peace Treaty and sell Navigation for 575g. Checking in with Cleopatra, who also is knowledgeable about longitude and latitude it turns out she will sell it for 560g and our World Map. Looking to establish a value for the WM I remove it from the offer for Navigation and discover that Cleopatra values our world map at over 100g. There is adult kroner to be gathered here if only anybody else had some. Bede decides that peace with the Netherlands is a good thing and that knowing how to calculate latitude and longitude even better decides to buy the knowledge from the Netherbits then run a round of map brokering.

Start the round by filling in the holes in the map so:
Buy a TM from Gandhi for 15g
Buy a TM from Henry for 20g
Trade Maps with Will at a net gain of 80g: he pays 120 for ours and we pay 2gpt for his

Nobody else has any money so will wait a bit to finish the round

Exhausted by issuing orders to the ministers, negotiating with the emissaries of five mulish nations, executing the unfit and unworthy, and watching the fireworks Bede orders his nightcap and goes to bed.

Too soon, the palace guard catches light fingered Aurora stealing the cloak of night that had spread across the wine dark sea. The Great Helmsman broaches in his sleep and mutters, "Come back to the raft, Huck honey".

The palace guard takes Aurora to the dungeon in chains and reports Huck missing, presumed drowned.

The arrival of Hammi in a lather puts the final nail in the coffin of sleep. Hammi wants to renew the alliance against Will.

"You're kidding right? You won't sell us dyes at a reasonable price? Despise our culture do you? Get out, you Babylonian lout! You're next!"

(to be continued)

Willie has MilTrad and will sell it for 1200. It could be used in a trade for Banking with the Indians who want 2000g. Nah, ain't worth it, as we will have Banking in 13 turns at a net cost of 100 using a scientist in Old Persia.

After consulting the advisors decide the deal with Gandhi can wait. I am determined not to speed these guys along to the IA.

T9 1395
Position assault teams outside Babylon's borders on eastern island. The only reason to take the towns is to forestall their uyse as staging areas for a Babylonina assault on the home island. They are of no other strategic sginificance. The pop2 town can be kept and garrisoned.
Spot a local source of saltpeter and redirect a settler to claim it.

Waiting on the Banking deal and it went away and Cleo now has Physics which she will trade to us for 2650g. Rather than fund her research I sell her furs for 30g +5gpt. Stealing Physics would only cost 1928g at safe and war with Cleo is relatively low risk as she lacks iron and saltpeter.

T10
Sail the fleet around to pick up zerks and drop off pikes.
Staging Babylonian invasion force at Kiel
Destroy defacements on the land.

SitRep
Science- Physics available from Cleo, buy or steal? Banking due in 9

Military-Staging forces for assaults on Babylonian towns east of home island. Suggest building spears or warriors in Stavenger then moving them to the coast for upgrade, low shield cost, high cash cost, but we have more of the latter than the former. We have five full boatloads of Berserkers so once they are all in place we can go acquire some dyes from Babylon.

Domestic-Lux at 70%. Can be reduced, but buying any luxes are going to cost lots, so the choice is between spending money abroad and spending it locally.

Our military is costing 0 so the choice is bewtween science and luxury and until we have more libraries spending on science is less than compensatory, Using scientists in the corrupt hinterlands is a better way to go.

I have been pop rushing along harbors, temples and courthouses in the Persian and Chinese lands by nursing them through 20 shield increments. There are also pop rushing opportunities in both places for libraries and markets.
