Glad to hear the situation worked out in the end, Rambuchan - hope your mother enjoys them. Sounds pretty crude to me as well for them to have been so forward in their disapproval, FWIW. Regardless of the meaning they chose to associate (with what should be a light amusing gift no less), it could have been overtly sporting a fused pound-dollar-uber-capitalism-with-persecuted-artist insignia and they still should've smiled and said thank you, IMHO.

The divers are just trying to liberate them from their oppressed servitude as ornamental garden monitors.
(I love how the police took the original garden, but are now powerless to do anything about any possible sub-50-M gardens because of regulations. I had this image in my mind of a garden gnome party at 50.2 M deep, laughingly mocking the arbitrary 50-M borderline. It's like just crossing into international waters before commencing the monkey knife fights (Simpsons).)

Anyway, I agree with you. It is bad manners to get irritated for a gift, unless it was given with very clear second intentions.
I just remember a "mistery santa" (or however you call it) present somebody recieved in a work christmas lunch. It was a weather donkey figurine, and with a note that says how it worked. "If the tail goes up, warm weather, ir the tail stays down, bad weather". I have to say that in Spain spanish tail is used as a substitute of the word 'penis'. So, if you re-read my the note with that meaning in mind, the gift could be quite rude for a middle aged man.
BTW. the giver of the present was from Uruguay, so he might not had the second meaning of 'tail' in mind.
So, maybe there is a hidden meaning of the word 'gnome' for that couple, If you gnome what I mean.
Apart from that, they are tacky.
If I'd receive those figurines, I would accept them, and give them to somebody else the following christmas.
Little muslim figurines, on the other hand....
