no it won't - its a simple text file in
my games\<gamename>\
where <game name> is
Sid Meier's Civilization 4
or
Warlords
or
Beyond the Sword

depending on which of the three games you want to change the settings for. If you want to make perfectly sure just save a copy of the original file before changing stuff - but frankly: you cannot damage anything by changing it :)

No, they have no effect on your game assets. They only affect certain settings. And if they ever do screw something up, simply delete the ini file, start the game and it will create a brand new one with the default settings.

ahh! you're a genius! i didn't even know! though i sorta thought about looking at one point given the game's openness to nodding... but then i didn't.

Anyways, do you know if anyone's tried to optimize it for linux? or if any optimizing or modding even needs to be done to make it more linux compatible? or would it just be hardware optimizing that would make a difference!?

I am guessing Directx is the only real problem, I wonder if there would be a way around that so you dont have to depend on wine! or maybe an alternative for the graphics engine to rely on? --I dont really know how directx works or what part it plays in graphics and therefore wouldn't know where to begin looking for an alternative; were such a thing available.-- is that possible do you think?? does anyone know? cause i barely know what i'm talking about!

but it seems to me if they did release the source code, couldn't it be moded to run natively on linux and/or Mac OSX?!?!

ahhh!! I'm so excited! I'm gonna go compile this over and over until i corrupt everything on my hard-drive and need to reinstall my OS for the thousandth time!

The SDK on the Firaxis site is dated. The latest is included in the folder where you installed the game. And the graphics engine can't be modified.

If the graphics engine can't be modified, but we have the source code for the actual game, couldn't we run it under a different engine? It doesn't look to me- though I could be wrong, like there aren't any animation dependent processes (like Medieval 2s battle mode) but rather that all animations are just a representation of the processes (like Medieval 1s battle mode). That being the case wouldn't it be easy to divorce the core of the game from the engine?!

Sure it would be a lot of work to modify another engine to work, but not so much if everyone is just willing to settle for dots and squares as stated earlier, or I wonder if whatever engine freeciv uses would be merged...

Though i guess if it were possible someone would have done it by now, but I dunno...

I got the fastest turn money can buy. LIfe is valauble. Time saved is worthy investment If anyone wants to see what works best its cedarmill. Tests with high edn cederon recent mobos put all debate to rest ..well not sure what come round these monthes actually...but price wise your laughing if lucky enough to ebay yourself a cedar is a bid war

Heres a run down to CIv4 turn-time success
This CPU 3.6ghz 64nm (for less heat constraint on OC) pent 4 *also comes in 3.2 or 3.4ghz
I enjoy the ease in which compabtible brings essential upgrades in motherboards So instead of the 800mhz default go with a 1100mhz at the lowest
YOU can match up easy for once thanks to the compatiblty guide introduced witht eh cedar and now standard with Intel.Just match The sticker on the mobo with the Cedar's list of suituable upgrades (first CPU with this guide after INtell flexed its mucle agaist mobo manufactuers sayin No more confusion for our custumers lookin to upgrade!.

Before confusion resulted and people were gettin bottleneck on prescott performace after forking out big for "better' mobo )

-NExt enjoy the Cedars benifits as being the only 64 bit supported monocore so buy all the ram you want and keep in on windows xp.

-OK finish with the great video card I don't know crap about those. I But you just can't fathom the amount of data being process at late stages.Now counter all those animation on a huge map when empires pump out 1000 armys a peice.)

-cool to know t designers probably designed civ4 on this sytem/cpu as it was the most refined mono ready to go back in 2004 (some think beacuse bts was only yesterday that CIv4 is a new game, big mistake. SHe was drawn up way before dualcore meant anythin cept mybe in diamond drilling, as in a exploration client's 'core split' )


OH and Snaz, You have a cedar to eh? Out on limb here but I think its safe to assume deley is non-existant for you to? Heh. Funny we see all theses pricy quads broke down along the mega-map size road as we fly by on mono hittin-turn highway wavin : bye bye :goodjob:

NO boast just tryin to set the record on what runs civ4 faster. How hard is that to read? Hard to believe? You bet. Thats why I said I came eqpt with a bag of back up to my claims.
I had to run youtube tests and back up alot of stuff I said to dismiss the "programmers : who came at me with "Newer computer always mean better perfomace".
Id argue back the makers made this game artical exception to the truth. Reason I know was privilage of lpayin best mono and the dual using same save. Didn;t matter People were vicious defending their dualcores like it was their best girl. William knows this, as Civ4 is his girl. Bought her a new ram stick for Valetines day no doubt :goodjob:

Ya Ive argued for a while that the best monocore(ceder) tricked out with the Cedar precedent system for guaranted motherboard upgrade benifits (most were uncompatible durin presscot times) . ANd of course the best video cards, when all eqpt on the cedar mill CPU, made the faster turns, less delay results over dualcore and quadcores. Contraversial stuff . Enemy making statements but backed none the less with all the evidence you need

Yes, when I said this a year back, it seemed Id always get WIlliam and few others haters posts up in feeble arms sayin Quadcore could destroy my much cheaper, yet more superior on the only game worth playing, (this is civ "fanatic" forum right> ) Cedermill.
SO no sweat. I used your guys 'tudes' for my enjoyment. I deal with them nicly. Link you to about 6 debates where all failed to prove what they put on thier plate. Remember back then less had discoverd what most know now to be true. I was alone in my theories facing some real dualcore door knobs

One guy gave me a 'toms bench' link to comparison play-off between 2 CPU's, one being my cedar of course , the other, the newest dual-core I believe.
Problem was game tested was the newset version of "Unreal Tourney":rolleyes: It showed clearly dualcore supremecy. But wait... this example is completely un civ related so his comment attached: " theres your proof Dual beats P4 you idiot" " seemed a bit to much, heh.
Otherwords You don't know where Ive come from and what Ive out flanked it looks like now, just by sticking to my guns all this time. I know the crowd I deal with here. Desperate, not wanting to realilze the old still beats the new on this game. They hate me. But truth is I love it actually . Is that wrong?
