The "I Got A New Game!" Thread

Prepare to be extremely disappointed. The demo has shown that the game has made absolutely no advancements in the RPG genre or gaming in general. Kingdoms of Amalur is a single-player action-WoW for consoles.

I thought the marketing focus of it was that RA Salvatore wrote the story (guy who wrote a bunch of D&D novels in the 1990s).

Woah woah woah woah woah woah woah.

Woah.

RA Salvatore wrote it?

As in, the actual RA Salvatore, and not an evil clone?

Really?

From what I have seen of the previews I didn't really expect it to be amazing but I tried the demo with an open mind and just I don't get what is so impressive about it. The only part I found remarkable was how they worked in choosing a name. I couldn't find anything new, improved or even above average in the demo.

It is graphically and asthetically rather unimpressive, I sort of felt like I was playing WoW. There are also many overly large and just plain silly glows around weapons (especially when swinging them, WTH?). The cartooniness isn't the problem, it is the rather low-resness of many of the textures and dumb art choices like spikes on bows.

The fighting mechanics don't feel like anything special either, it just turned into button mashing the magic spell and whatever weapon was strongest (I played around with both the staff and swords). The archery is some of the worst I have ever seen in a game (it is seriously awful, and relies entirely upon autoaim and it is too easy to loose your target, arrow ammunition also is limited but regenerates after 5 seconds, which makes no sense at all), and the scepter is an auto-aiming semi-automatic wand.

The intro movie is forgettable, although I look forward to seeing it on Unskippable on the Escapist.

I'm not entirerly sure about the extent of the open world, although I like the lack of frequent loading screens, but it is still seemed somewhat linear (after the tutorial dungeon, of course).

Maybe it was limited for the demo, but the lack character creation didn't have that many choices either. It isn't bad and I generally screw up with the very detailed options anyway but nothing impressive either.

It is very obviously a console port, although aside from camera issues it did work with a M&K.

In the end, I just felt like I was playing a singleplayer action MMORPG and am quite disappointed.

EDIT: While R.A. Salvatore was/is a major contributor to the game's world, setting and/or story (I have no idea how much is his work) he didn't do it alone, Todd McFarlen (one of the lead designers from Bethesda who did major work on Oblivion) was also working with him.

It looks like a relatively fun world to explore though. Sometimes it's all I need. I'm an explorer at heart, and if the world is great and huge, then count me in (at some point...). Your comparison to MMORPGs might ring true. But I tremendously enjoyed my first playthroughs of WoW, because they involved discovering the world and tiny bits of places and things everywhere, and the areas all looked stunning back then (and still kind of do).

So yeah, it might be a little bland gameplay-wise, but sometimes for me, when the setting is great, I'm ready for adventure.

I got Red Faction: Guerilla. A decent game but little more.

Then I started playing Mount and Blade: Warband.

...I no longer play anything else.

I was like that for 3 months. I would still be playing if it weren't for a bug that made me keep randomly losing troops from the bottom of my roster up (I'd lose like 50).

I know but theres MMORPG coming later. I think its worth the shot. I havent had time to check it out much, not even demo yet. I know though R.A.Salvatore creates the world and lore. I suppose not all are fan of MMORPG like Im, most of them especially triple A MMORPG are good value for your money.

If RA Salvatore made it, what's the big deal about it being a single player MMO?

Of course, if it really does suck, Imma be pissed, because he could have spent that time writing another book.

Should be really unique world, especially since he knows everything about it, history, he can make nice stories/quest. Thats what I expect. Most MMORPGs uses known worlds like Star Wars, Conan, Star Trek, Warhammer. This is something totally new.

Yeah, that well thing sounded pretty cool.

Yeah, like I said I havent had time to check it out, but its such a waste if its yet another wow-copy. He mentioned somewhere though theres over 10,000 year of history. Thats something what we've never seen.

Salvatore wrote Forgotten Realms novels. His Forgotten Realms are pretty good, but if there's one thing they aren't, it's unique. They're like the archetype of high fantasy. I don't really know him much outside of these novels which I've read a long time ago. Admittedly they were published maybe before many video games that made high fantasy what it has become today.

There are a lot of mods and patches out there for it. I'm sure that'll fix it. One of M&B's infinite strengths is its modability, along with a small but dedicated following.

His work is intended to fill those cliches. I think he even said he invented his main protagonist, Drizzt, off the top of his head at a board meeting because they asked him for a character. Novels written in Forgotten Realms that aren't by Greenwood should be ignored.

I could probably get it fixed, but it may require me losing all my troops. Definitely if it's a mod. The main problem was that no one on the TW forums freaking knew what was going on. So I just played multiplayer for a month then started playing different games after it became apparent that no one was going to answer. I'm not too hung up over it, and I'll definitely play it again some time.

Figured out why it looks and feels like an MMO in several ways, if KoA does well enough they are going to use the setting for an MMO. Because what the market needs is yet another average MMORPG.
