It's in the middle of nothing... No resources, no improvement, no natural wonder, no past event that could justify that ... stain of blood.

It appears to be an image reference to CFC's custom 404 error.

You'll see it a lot on hills and mountains near the poles as well. It is simply a shading layer error.

That's normal. What's mysterious is getting a mountain where you can't see one, or having a trireme able to move onto one ocean tile
