The name Adolf

I implied the existance of one?

Sorry, the question wasn't directed to you, but to the poster you replied first. The one who bringed up the name Jesus in first place.

@igloodude... I heard that in Paraguay a 'funny' father called his newborn Nacional-4 Penarol o, to celebrate the victory of the soccer team he supported. Quite incredible.

A bit more possible is that mother who called her baby after father's baby. Apparently the baby was conceived after a crazy night out (like so many), the father was a foreigner who didn't speak the mother's tongue and the only information she had about the baby's father is the name sewed in his sleeve. The baby was named usarmy. (EDIT: This is something I heard and it does not directed to the CFC user usarmy18)

My guess is that Germany has that list of acceptable names as an obsolete christian church rule, but it prevents giving 'funny' names for poor babies.

That's exactly the use of it. And that's a very good thing as noone should be allowed to scar his child for life by calling it "Moonapple" or "Falling Sky" or some nonsense like that.

Well, Jesus is quite popular in Latin America.
Isn't it pronounced differently though, like "Hey-zeus" or something? That's how I heard it pronounced. (Quite ironic, actually ;) )

That's how they pronounce Jesus of Nazareth's name too.

In France, some poor girls were given a feminized version of the famous marechals in WWI: Joffre becae Joffrette, stuff like that.
So avoiding a great villain's name is good, but using a great hero's name is not necessarily good.

when my mother worked as a nurse, there was a doctor who came from a right wing family.
Being born in the late fourties/early fifties, he was named "Philippe".
Go figure.

But Philippe does not have the stain that Adolphe has. Probably because a lot of French kings were neamed Philippe, so it's not as if only one known guy was named Philippe and ruined the name.

Maybe. Sweden's got a number of kings called Adolf, yet no Swede would give their son the name today.

Let me explain further.
I'm half French, my mother in French, and this took place in France.

Yeah... I knew that, and I know a lot of people named Philippe, born after WW2 and Vichy, so I must be missing something in your explanation :)

Being born in the late '40s, only a Vichy fan could call their kid that?

True :)

And I've checked on the net: you have a slight dent right after WW2, but...

Well, I haven't met anyone called Genghis, Attila or Caligula recently, so I doubt it.
My girlfriend's step father is called Osman. His son is called Oktay Genghis.
