This is really rediculous, Fayadi. China has done its share of bullying, just like EVERY country.

Why are you so afraid of the US? Most Americans love your culture, and some visit your country for leisure.

Americans have no problem with the Chinese people. Hell, theres millions of Chinese-Americans! Most Americans have some problems with your government, and its policies, but we dont have any plans to invade on the table. We dont view you as an enemy.

You talk about unity and peace, how about a US-China alliance?
I think our two countries could do alot of good, together. Dont you?

On another note, the issue about Taiwan: First of all, Taiwan is part of China. Don't argue with me on this one cause even US agree with it. Why the Chinese government and Taiwanese government are having this compatiable problem is not my business. All I'm saying is, since China is bullying(if you can prove it), then it's nothing more than US bullying California. Get my point?

The Taiwan problem probably deserve it's own thread, if furthur discussion is needed than why not create a new thread?

You are a good example of a misunderstanding.
You are losing it again. Can you just drop your nationalism a bit and at least look at the world from a less bias point of view? We DON"T care who the Chinese fear or who fear the Chinese buy why do you care so much? This is the internet after all.

on a side note. Today's newspaper said something about China being the largest electronic and computer component producer in the next 10 years. Does that mean we all are going to get another discount?



Anyways, why not just disband the NATO? What's the point of it now? Cold war ended in 1989 as well as soviets union and the WARSAW pact were history.

Taiwan&China sounds bit like Finland&Soviet Union at the WWII. I'm quite sure that most of the world thought that Finland belonged to the Soviet Union, but I'm quite sure also that the Finnish didn't think so. Even our sweet little ally Germany was ready to consider Finland to be part of Soviet. It seems that things turned out differently...

turkey has been in nato for a while and didn´t czech republic or any other eastern european country join nato some years ago?

Sorry, but I thought WWI was justly about exacerbated nationalism (the rising new empires) and WWII about races (nazism). The Franco-Prussian war of 1870 was also about nationalism (for instance, to which culture did Alsace and Lorraine belong to). Otherwise, you are probably right, for a big part.

The only military grouping I know of that's still active today in SE Asia is the Five Powers Defence Agreement, a leftover fr the days when British Malaya and Spore got their independence and got no real military and when Communism was still very much a real threat. Allan, Fayadi and I got a 'discussion' bout Taiwan in the Off-topic thread about rating President Bush. Mostly resolved (I hope) over there.
And I think that's Nepal. It's the only Hindu kingdom that didn't fall to the Brits cos of Qing Chinese protection (it's a tributary state or something). Even up till almost the end of the Qing dynasty, they were still sending tribute to the Qing court. But not really a part of Qing China. And apparently, it had escaped the notice of the Chinese Communists (who were seeking to 'restore' the Qing empire).

It originally started out with only member countries on both sides of the North Atlantic. Later it grew to incl other perpheral countries (cos of the Cold War, communists etc). Guess it's just too inconvenient to rename the alliance just cos of a few out-of-place (minor) member countries.

As far as I know, SEATO is still in effect. I never heard anything otherwise.

There is also ANZUS, and a separate US-ROK and US-Taiwan defense. The armistance with Japan binds the US to defense as well. Im fuzzy on the last one, and it has been modified many times.

Man, we have alot of treaties! Better to have alot of friends, I always say...

Milosevich was clearly a threat to peace in Europe, and NATO should have done more than send MPs. The French Foriegn Legion should have waxed his nazi @$$!

Thats my only negative comment about NATO. Otherwise it gives me a warm fuzzy to go to sleep knowing Europe has our back, and they are proving it right now. Its nice to see all the support America is getting in this time of war.

It may not be as necessary as it was when the USSR was still around, but NATO can still do some good business, and deter future European wars.

I think it may be about time for a global alliance, seperate from the UN and anything else. A treaty of mutual defense and protection, attack one and you attack all kind of thing. Its major focus aimed at rouge states and (gasp) limiting the US from future military operations.

Look at it this way, if you combine NATO, ANZUS, China, Russia and a couple dozen more countries, whose left to fight?

Hmmm, SEATO is still active? Strange cos never hear of it even though I grew up and live in the region. But then, the US armed forces conducts annual joint training sessions with Thailand (and Spore occasionally) so maybe that's for SEATO. Just that they're keeping it very low-key.
Remember once Msia conducted joint exercises with US Marines. That sure got all the fundies in the country jumping up and down and hopping mad. Something bout giving away national secrets. You know ..... fundies.

Watch out with these alliances. The first World War erupted so quickly because of such alliances. Britain, France and Russia had a treaty of mutual protection, and so did Germany, Austro-Hungary and Italy. A single offence on one part and all these countries are drawn into a bloody war (pun not intended). The cold war happened because of alliances (NATO vs Warsaw Pact). If it had degenarated into an open war, all these nations would have shot at each others barbarically (and with nukes!), including their allies all around the world.

That's why we want a global alliance instead of NATO + some other

So there is no "these" alliances, but rather "the" alliance
