The Non-Midas Touch, Deity Variant, 1.21PTW

IHT: We can trade :hammer: Why didn't we do so? That is the way to survive! France gives us engineering AND theology for furs and 32 gpt!

I swap a couple of laborers to commercial tiles - instead of shields for new hoplites-. This raises our income to 27 gpt.

IT: Egypt takes Zariqum from the Babylonians. Izibia is now an isolated Babylonian enclave SW of Athens. I think about taking that, either from the Egyptians or the Babylonians... Massive troop movement of the English trough our lands... Impossible to take Norwich at the moment.

Turn 1 (560 AD) I try to buy Invention from France for 30 gpt and 38 gold. We're close to a deal. After disbanding three warrior I can close the deal for 33 gpt and 30 gold.
8 gold and 1 gpt.

IT: Babylon seems to be at war with everyone! This is GOOD. But we still have a deal with them for 10 turns. After that we might be thinking about joining the party.

Turn 2 (570 AD) I move 5 MI's to Izibia and Zariqum.
9 gold and 3 gpt.

IT: China declares war on Egypt. Egypt wants us to join the war against Babylon, I refuse. I don't re-negotiate our Ivory deal with Egypt. I DO re-negotiate our spices deal with France and now pay 9 gpt and 5 gold plus world map. Egypt also takes Ibizia. I figured we need the two former Babylonian cities ourselves, so I decide to go to war vs Egypt soon.

Turn 3 (580 AD) I have to hire a few taxmen and push lux to 10% to prevent cities from rioting. England gets 5 gold from us.
We make -1 gpt and have 10 gold.

Turn 4 (590 AD) -1 gpt and 9 gold. We are strong compared to Babylon, but we can't attack anyway.

IT: Egypt also conquers Samarra. Babylon is doomed.

Turn 5 (600 AD) Second Egyptian war :soldier: ! I move in the troops.
- 3 gpt and 8 gold.

IT: Our hoplite in Mycenae manages to stay alive vs an Egyptian war chariot. We enter the Golden Age :hammer: England is also very busy with beating up the Babylonians.

Turn 6 (610 AD) We now make 69 gpt :D And after a bit of World map trading we have enough to get an embassy in Paris. We are able to buy gunpowder from them for 38 gpt, 4 gold and World Map. The French are our best friends  I see that India and England lack Chemistry !!! We have one source of saltpeter.
I conquer Izibia without losses by beating up two Egyptian cavs.

NMTIzibia.jpg

0 gold and 25 gpt.

IT: Russia established an embassy in Athens and the Egyptians still didn't start a counter-attack.

Turn 7 (620 AD) After dropping lux to 0% and disbanding 2 warriors, I am able to buy Chemistry from France for 59 gpt and 18 gold. I decide not to do it, because we can't afford such a big deficit. :( No upgrades possible, so I give away 15 gold to China. They go gracious.
10 gold and 25 gpt.

IT: England conquers Shuruppak from the Babylonians. This ends our trade deal with Babylon. Does it also end our spotless rep? :(
China and Russia team up vs Babylon.

Turn 8 (630 AD) We lose our luxury from Babylon and I have to hire clowns. Meanwhile I capture Zariqum without losses.
I get silks from China for 10 gpt, 40 gold and world map. Guess we didn't get a rep hit when the Babylon route was cut off.
We have 10 gold and make 25 gpt.

Turn 9 (640 AD) Nothing much. Troops move to Samarra. Still nothing useful to do with the money, so 19 gold goes to India.
We have 10 gold and make 24 gpt.

Turn 10 (650 AD) Samarra captured!

NMTsamaracapture.jpg

Sparta switched to settler, we must try to grab that wine SW of Samarra! I make peace with Egypt for Chemistry and 36 gpt, 25 gold in return. We trade Egypt Iron and 5 gpt for Metallurgy. England still doesn't have Chemistry, so I trade it for Education, 13 gold and territory map. India wants Metallurgy and gives us Astronomy, Music Theory, territory map and 2 gold. England gives Banking and territory map for it.
We have 25 gold and make -10 gpt.

Next one up: you decide what to do with the 15 gold with which we overran our budget. I'd suggest to send a settler SW of Samarra ASAP to grab that wine. We also might think about joining the war vs the Babylonians, if there's still something left of them when we near their cities, that is. We could get a MA with France vs Babylon...

PS. Sorry for being so negative before !!

Aggie!!:D I see what you mean when you said things were getting interesting:eek: :D

That was simply awesome...we're now, what, more than half-way through the middle ages, and in a Golden Age! We've got a 2nd iron, and some incense right? Possibility of wine also! We've gained 3 cities...fantastic.

Only thing I'm worried about....our rep might be stained. If China and everyone else is at war with Babylon, they won't mind that we have broken a deal with them...as soon as they make peace with Babylon, however (or Babylon is exterminated) then the rep hit will be felt :( Nothing we can do about it at the moment, we'll just have to bear it, and there are plenty of ways round. Oh, and I agree....if it looks like Babylon is gonna die, join the party! Join an alliance and see what we can get for it, and try and nab a city or 2....IMPORTANT POINT though: if we do sign an alliance, make sure there are no physical goods (luxes or strats) as part of the deal, since if Babylon is killed the deal will be terminated and we will definitely get a rep hit if there were physical goods involved.

Meli, old man, it's over to you!

We indeed have iron (under Zamarra) and incense as soon as the borders of Zamarra expand :D

In turn 7 I was thinking about going into a huge deficit to buy chemistry for a 2fer1 with India and England. I decided against it: too risky. Luckily England still didn't have chemistry when I made peace with Egypt.

About our rep: no-one could predict that Babylon would go into decline so fast. I doesn't look too catastrophic. I THINK that India isn't at war with Babylon and still they are willing to accept 1gpt for their territory map (I just tried).

I hope that you all don't mind me selling iron to our enemy, Egypt. We got a few nice techs this way :)

Hey Aggie!

Grrrreat set of turns.

Finally have the time to update my reading of this game... Aggie, fantastic ! You completely changed the face of the game. Now we have a little hope, let's make it bigger and bigger !

@ Nad : To answer you, I gifted 2 civs with some money at the end of 2 turns, because there was no possibilities of upgrade. I had upgraded all swordmen to mace in the end, and with our gpt level, there was no chance of upgrading warriors to mace. So from what I could think, there was nothing I could do with that money (no more rushing).

WE-WILL-WIN!!! :p

About your rep.

Hmm, nice information, Control Freak; I didn't realize that was how it worked. I assumed that since the deal was set for 20 turns, if it was ended before that then we wouild take some blame, but if the payment structure is more important than the length of the deal, then we're fine, and that's great news :)

Yeah that is certainly what the game seems to show.

Nobody is that annoyed at us, well apart from the Egyptians and the Chinese are erm talking to them.

Can I ask every not to let their gpt fall below -10gpt?
It's a real pig to sort out.

Anyway, I'll be posting my turns (finally) at lunchtime.

hmmm, good point; if it's -10 gpt in our golden age, what is it going to be when the GA ends?

OK here we go...

I used my 10 turns of GA to build some improvements...

Somethings didnt quite go to plan.

Pre-Turn (650AD) - Sell WM around. Make 10gold. Switch Samarra to Settler. I gift England 25gold. Also rearrange citizens so that we run at -8gpt, rather than -11gpt. Can I just say that running more than -10gpt is asking for trouble under these rules?

Turn 1 (660AD) - Athens Cathedral -> Bank. Hmm gpt up to -10gpt and we have 2. WM trading. I make exactly 8 gold. Our warriors are safe this turn. Sparta changed from Med Inf to Bank. Thermopylae switched to Bank. Got our gpt down to -8.

Turn 2 (670AD) - Pharsalos marketplace -> Bank. We are now on -2gpt. Sell WM around. 6gold, -2gpt.

IT - Russians destroy the Babs. One less civ to trade our map to :(

Turn 3 (680AD) - Buto aqueduct -> Marketplace. We have 8gold and -3gpt. Izibia and Zariqum switched to library.

Turn 4 (690AD) - Delphi FP -> market. Maybe some deal run out, or the FP is that good but our gpt jumps to +28! We have 9gold and +28gpt. Rearrange citizens for shields and it goes down to 8gpt.

Turn 5 (700AD) - Zzzzz.

Turn 6 (710AD) - Argos Aqueduct -> market.

Turn 7 (720AD) - Izibia library -> harbor.

Turn 8 (730AD) - Athens Bank -> library. Lisht temple -> market.

Dangit. The People of Argos have deposed our governor and joined the english. Samarra settler -> library.

Turn 9 (740AD) - Sparta Bank -> Cathedral. Zariqum library -> barracks. Knossos Aqueduct -> Temple. Herakleia founded with one wine in its boundary. Couldnt get to the 2 wine site to the SW as the Damn Russians settled there last turn :(

Turn 10 (750AD) - Athens Library -> University. Wow a load of deals expire. We now have 40 gold after last turn, and now do 73gpt.

Remember that we will finish our GA soon so dont use all our gpt...

Just a note: I don't think there is a rep hit for alliances ending early even if you pay gpt for goods. Can be exploited, pay 100gpt for MA and tech, then destroy weak civ next turn.

I'm not entirely sure how it works with goods. If you add a tech, as in the example you give, then there is no rep hit, but I think if there are resources involved, there may be a penalty, although I'm not 100% sure.

Skyfish: if possible, please try to play your turns by 2moro night. Otherwise, it will be time for a skip.
