The questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread IV

there still is not really such a thing as a unified italian. the farther you go south the more different the spoken language is to the official one, culminating in sicilian.

Or does it culminate in Maltese... ;)

So Sicilian is just a poor man's Italian?

No. It's the traditional language of Sicily and extreme south Italy. Imagine being a Sicilian kid nowadays. You would speak standard Italian, but you would also be well endowed in Sicilian. Your grandparents would speak pretty much only in Sicilian.

Is it just me or does that guy sound exactly like Arnold Schwarzenegger?

It sounds like these different 'languages' are close enough that you can vaguely understand each other, but different enough to be considered separate? It's very interesting how so close to each other the differences, and moreso how they still exist. My grandparents have some old maps in Ligurian, I couldn't figure it out at first.

That's why they strike me more as dialects than different languages, just to look at. I don't speak any of them though, so what do I know? :dunno:

I assume it came about when people used to be fur traders, and it could be used as a medium of exchange. So they would trade 10 Buck skins for a pound of corn or something.

Does anyone here regularly shower at night instead of the morning?

I thought showering in the evening/night was the most common way to do it... :D

Actually I think that I'm the only one of my close real life friends that showers in the morning (although in the summer I like to do it twice, if I get the chance). Among other factors (like being extremely tired when I get home) it's also probably because I have rather longish hair and so it doesn't look good at all if it hasn't been washed that day.

What is the difference between a language and a dialect? As I think Mirc said once, a language is a dialect with an army.

Funny, I shower in the evening because of my longish hair :) I'm not going out with wet hair, and blowdrying is no option for me:

Yeah but yours is probably longer than mine, it only takes my hair some 30 minutes to dry up if I use a towel to get most of the water off after I step out of the shower. :)

What Ziggy said + I have a feline-like disgust for water in the morning.

Common rule of the thumg is that speakers of different dialects can understand each other. Even though army has something to do with it also.

I don't like showering in the evening. I just seem to naturally dislike it. I think I saw one too many horror movie commercials when I was little.

I used to shower in the evening but got sick of having to fix my hair every morning so started in the morning showers. Much better, feel nice and clean all day, hair nice and clean and not greasy or anything. I can't stand when my hair gets long to not take a shower almost immediately after waking up.

Evening showers rock.
