The questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread IV

More competitive. Economists' maths is poor. Bankers like mathematics because it gives a sheen of respectability to a profession that is basically a load of gamblers.

Hmmm... well I doubt any physicists actually majored in physics with becoming an economist in mind, otherwise they would have majored in mathematics. right?

But that is something that I've heard from many people, a lot of people end up in careers that have no connection with their degree.

R score

The R score (cote de rendement au collégial, CRC or cote R in French) is a statistical method which classifies CEGEP students' academic performances in Quebec. It is used by Quebec universities for selection purposes.

The R score is in fact a z-score to which an indicator of group strength (ISG) has been added.

R score = ( Z score + ISG + C ) x D

The R score calculation is done for every CEGEP course. The final, computed R score is the result of the weighted averaging of all the R scores from the individual courses.

The Z score gives an indication of the grade of the student with respect to the grades of other students in the class.

The ISG is the Indicator of the Strength of the Group. This group strength is determined using the weighted grade results of all of the courses taken in Secondary (high school) IV and V for all of the group's students. The ISG was implemented primarily to offset the advantage enjoyed by high-performing students in weak class groups over equally high-performing students in strong class groups. The inclusion of the ISG in the determination of the R score allows for a more equitable comparison of students between themselves, regardless of their CEGEP's academic rank, although its efficacy remains in dispute.

Most R scores do indeed range from 15 to 35; average marks should result in an R score of 25.

Has anyone else heard of such a way to assess a student's academic performance elsewhere?

Would you prefer having such a system over, say, standardized tests like the SAT in the US?

College applications generally require the applicant's class rank and the size of the class in high school. That's somewhat similar, perhaps?

I guess it is somewhat similar, though I don't know how exactly US universities handle their admissions process. Does it take into account performance in previous grades (i.e. grades 10 & 11), and that relative to peers?

I'm somewhat uneasy with the system we have here as it seems rather cutthroat-ish (sp?).

As far as I know, class rank is calculated by taking every grade the person earns in high school over four years, weighting the grades by difficulty of course, and making a list which has every student from highest to lowest grade average.

We do it a little differently than Québec, but I think it accomplishes the same end.

I dont even think my High School weighed the grades, which screwed me over as far as class rank. Not that it prevented me from getting into my college of choice, so it wasnt something that bothered me.

Hm, that seems particularly rotten.

A bad (or even mediocre) grade in a difficult class could really screw you over, then...

So, a physics or Chemistry degree would basically be only for becoming a teacher, or an accountant? ...

science sucks

Uh no...you'd probably end up in a laboratory, perhaps an inglorious industrial production laboratory, but still one.

There is no standard deviation in play? Weighted grade averages only?

Well, you're probably including your
*class rank
*grade point average
*SAT scores
*any other applicable standardized test scores
*transcripts
*list of any outside activities, sports, etc...

so the grade point average and class rank is just one component of the whole picture.

In Ontario -
Grade 12 Marks (MAJOR) - Average of top 6 marks including all prerequisite courses
Grade 11 Marks (Minor, only for early admission)
POSSIBLE - Essay/Personal Profile/Interview (depends on program, must be asked for)
Extenuating circumstance forms - ie if your dad died your senior year, they factor that in to your average.

that's it, nothing else.

When I refresh a page on these forums, sometimes I notice a post that wasn't there before. And it isn't a post that was newly posted, sometimes posts appear between two older posts or even on a page other than the last page of the thread. Why does this happen?

Could be cases of the mods merging multiple threads about the same thing. So suddenly old posts from a previously different thread show up in the one you viewed before.

I don't think we know enough about you
I'm a 24 year old male with only a high school education under my belt and trying to find meaning in my increasingly meaningless life.
Don't know where you're from. Which Army? The United States Army or another one?
I'm from Maryland and was thinking US Army but i'll join another if they'll take me.
Well if you arent physically fit at all, now is the best time to join!
I've never have been physically fit but if there that desperate:mischief:

If not they'd kick you out in 6 months, at least when I was in.
That's another thing i've alway's been afraid of failure and why i've never tried before.

We's going into depression. Depression only end with invasion. We invade Pakistan, maybe?

Do you have that rule written down somewhere? And even if that was true, you expect them to put the draft back? ;)
