Do you not think the fairness doctrine is stupid? If the republicans did such a thing I'm sure everyone would be complaining ten times more than Rush or anyone is, that, "OMG BUSH ARE HITLER!".

Could care less personally. His reasoning behind it was the sheer stupidity fault, especially when he decided to invoke Godwin's law mutlitple times, and twist the meaning of quotes derived from people.

It's not the views that bother me as much as poorly-constructed arguement does. Yeah, I can get how the Fairness Doctrine could be bad don't run off with wild conspiracy theories while trying to prove it.

It required broadcast stations equal airtime for contrasting sides of controversial issues in the interest of fairness to the public.

It was FCC policy up until the 80s, it required broadcasting stations to cover all major sides and opinions of the issues, in the interest of fairness. It's pretty much unconstitutional.

There's this dude at school who's quite literally the college's only (neo)conservative. He likes to write editorials about how liberals are facists and going to make America a one party state.

Why the hell would you go to college somewhere so blue and write stuff that's basically gonna make everyone think you're the biggest twatter on the planet?

People complain about what newspapers or TV stations write, but mandating neutrality wouldn't necessarily make for better coverage.

The US paid it's war debt by having an economy that grew strongly in most of the years between 1945 and 1980. So that while only a small amount of it was repaid at any one time, over an extended time small occasional surpluses were able to pay down the debt painlessly. There weren't actually a lot of surpluses in that time period. If you compare your top graph with your bottom one, you see that we didn't so much pay off WWII as we grew out from an under the burden of it.

The reason that the deficit started up so dramatically starting in 1981 was that we elected a fiscally conservative Republican president. Since then there has been no effort by government to match spending to revenue, except about 7 if the years when Clinton did so.
