Joking about suicide in that manner (or in any really) is excessively stupid. You did the right thing and I wouldn't care too much about their reaction to your mature, grown-up, responsible reaction to what your friend said to you. They don't really seem like the type of people that are worth being friends with in the first place.

Could be the mall, if it's a particular person, a library if you don't usually go there, could be a friends house, a park...
