The Two-State Solution

Why should the Palestinians be expected to leave? They've been there for centuries.

To be fair, the Jews were there a while too you know.

On Jerusalem, the Taba Summit pretty much showed what the result will end up being. Jerusalem-Al Quds will be the capital of both states, with the two states having sovereignty over their own neighbourhoods and some sort of joint administration of the Wall/Temple area.

One important thing to note is that the Palestinians are always talking about the "right of return," yet if Israel grants this concession, will the Arab states allow Jews to return to their countries?

I wouldn't think of it in the context of a concession. I think it would be naive to suggest Jews would want to move to many Arab countries or to expect states that incorporate religious doctrine into their law would suddenly become bastions of multiculturalism. In any case I don't think it's an important thing to note, it's more or less expected that anti-semitism will continue in those societies.

Israel and Palestine can make a deal. If you absolutely want to involve every damn Arab nation as a party to a treaty between those two, well... You don't really want a treaty here, do you?:crazyeye:

I'm just saying that if the Arabs ("Palestinian" is a political and self-identification term, there is no more of a Palestine today than there is a Rhodesia or a Prussia) want to be able to settle in Israeli territory, they should be willing to allow the Jews to come back to their territory.

If they won't accept that, the let Israel rule all of Gaza, Judea and Samaria and let the Palestinians have Jordan and Egypt. The problem with these so-called "Palestinians" is that nobody wants them; they all love to help the people with their cause but if it ever came to resettling them in their own country, they'd be furious with the idea. Let's remember that Kuwait expelled 400,000 of them after the PLO allied itself to Saddam Hussein in 1990...

OK, so instead of a small, localised conflict, you want to extend it to cover large swathes of the ME?

But sure, I'd be fine with Jordan being Palestinian, they already make up the majority, they already tried to take it once, and it makes as much sense as its present administration. I am, however, sceptical if it would solve the conflict over territory, even if it would be interesting if there was a "Transjordan" geographical and political locus for a Palestine, apart from the "Cisjordan" stuff the conflict revolves around. It would however remove one of Israel's friendliest next-door neighbour regimes.

If we are going to play political and geographical musical chairs on a scale like this, it would make as much sense to put Israel under a US mandate, all UN bells and whistles attached, have the EU and Japan fork out the money for the expense, and smother the place with peace-keepers/enforceres, as maybe most useful, until everyone is sitting still and migh be inclined to resolve things peacefully. Hell, we might even get the Syrians and Iranians to like the idea.
