The University of Immortals

All right,
Based on current replies, this is what I am thinking:
Montezuma
Random map
Normal speed

If anyone wants to play this on epic, r_rolo1 volunteered to create an alternate save.

I can do better than that ( in fact it gives even less work ): I can create a scenario for all speeds locked ( or not ,depending of the request ) on immortal. In fact i think that is better that way....

Why not go "random" on civs? Adaptability and playing to traits would seem to be a prereq for succeeding on Immortal? Same with choosing a fractal map. Only occassionally winning Monarch (Marathon/Huge), but I'll follow along; always willing to learn.

I think some players have preferences and/or have played too many games with other leaders. I don't think this thread will be limited to one game though.
In the end, I don't have a good "reason" for picking Montezuma, I just feel like it. Maybe it's the long winter we have had in Canada that makes want to play a Mexican .

What is the difference between locked and unlocked? Also, would the scenario conflict in any way with Bruhic's patch or with the BUG mod?

BTW, I warmly recommend the BUG mod. It creates a log of your game that you can post here for reference to others. It is a text file with all the minor details like when a city is founded, what tech is researched when, etc.

I don't like the BUG mod as it crashes the event log for non-bug users (or at least used to, supposedly the new version fixed it).

Roll a start up for us, I'm in between games at the moment and need my civ 4 fix.

Aw, hell. I'll play immortal for this. Who cares if that's 2 levels higher than I've won on...there's a lot to be learned from a thread like this...

Some leaders are better than others. At Monarch, I'd be perfectly happy with random. Hell, I'd be happy with "let's play the worst imaginable and make silly rules about what we allowed to do. At this level, it's different.

I was a little surprised at that honestly. Earlier you said that you don't like playing warmonger. Aggressive and spiritual with a UB to whip the savages to death? How else can you play Monty but war?

My understanding is that locked means you can't enter world builder to get two Modern Armour and three instant settlers. Lock if it you want but I think that this is a game between Gentlemen and a Gentleman's word is his honour.

Odds are a random leader would be easier than Monty. Or maybe not, haven't made the maths, I just hate jaguars. :P
I'll be fine with whatever though as long as I can play on epic.

I play Immortal with random leaders, normal speed & standard continent map settings. The latest that I won just two days ago was with Hatty, domination for 113k (new high score :king:). I've got 11 Immortal BTS victories so far, but at least that many losses too (including games I gave up on because the situation looked hopeless). 3 space races, 3 cultural, 3 diplomatic (2 of the backdoor variety, having conquered enough people, but not enough land for domination), and 2 domination. I've won with Mansa Musa, Napoleon, Darius, Caesar, Hatshepsut, Joao, Frederick, Hannibal, Brennus, Hammurabi, & Zara Yaqob. Seems I have the most success with Organized and Spiritual leaders, but I'll give it a go with any leader.

I usually win on emperor (if I don't screw it badly) and want to move up so I'll also join.

My preferences:
- Epic (but normal is fine)
- Fractal
- Cre, Spi, Org and sometimes Cha ;)

Monty would make a fun game. I once played him and had great success with the sacrificing altar (or how it's called).

I don't think we should have a random leader. If you first step up on another difficulty, you should play a strong leader / one you know well.

Some leaders I'd like to play: Hatty, Cyrus (rush anyone:lol:), Alex, Gilgamesh, Justinian, Monty, Willem.

I am in as well.

Preferences:
normal speed
normal map
fractal

Traits:
Spiritual

The diference is that in a locked dificulty scenario you an only play at one dificulty ( in this case it would be immortal ) but you could choose the speed. Unlocked dificulty means that you can choose between both levels and speed.

I 'challenge' on immortal : I finish 50% of the games (the other 50% I give up) and win less than 10% of the time.

but civ has to be challenging to me, emperor i win +75% time (or stop the game because I know i will win and this seems pointless to go on playing to me).

my prefs :
standart size
normal speed
fractal map

leaders :
spi/cre/phi
(love hatchy)

Rolo, I'm curious, do you have a special hack tool, or use the world builder to do this? I saw in your other thread you mentioned different game speeds for the same sort of map, and I never understood how in-game to change this.

WB and some notepad editing of the WB file.... There is a stickied thread in the creation and costumization forum by Dale that explains how to do that.

You can't change that kind of settings in game though :(

All right,
The first game begins.
Map: Shuffle (randomly selects archipelago, pangea, fractal or continents
Temprate, Standard size.
Leader: Montezuma
Normal speed

Please put all your game reports in spoilers and specify the range of years.
Please try to emphasize the following details:
1) on the first years when you have just 1 city, your exact build order, what do you chop, etc.
2) Since diplomacy is very important at this level, and I think is an area where most people new to this level are weak (at least I am), please try to detail every trade you make and the reasoning.
3) Any other detail you think is crucial for your eventual win (I hope :))

Let the game begin...

Seems like a good start.
From the crabs I guess we are to the south. I still don't know what kind of map we have, but there is a good chance we are on an island.
I am thinking to settle in place and tech agriculture first as it would bring us a 6 food tile.
Then we need to scout quickly and see what map we have. If it is an archipelago, great lighthouse looks attractive and possible with all these forests.
Otherwise, perhaps an oracle->CoL slingshot is desirable to unlock the unique building and then going construction and whipping a mighty army.
In any case, I think Aztecs traits and UB/UU makes them more attractive for a mid game war than a rush, so I think we should focus on infrastructure first.

Any thoughts (I am sure there are plenty)?
