What does Russell say about Nietzsche and Marx?
Russell spent a very large portion of his work excoriating Nietzsche, largely on the grounds that Nietzsche's sister edited his work after his death to make it read as though it supported Nazism.

That's a pretty epic sibling prank. I'll have to keep that one in mind for future reference.

I associate judgement with punishment.

I try avoiding punishing myself too much when I make the wrong judgment call. Why is my question being turned into a statement?

If punishment is the unbending result of a judgment call, then why have laws to begin with? Would not nature itself keep everything in check? If we cannot change nature, can we really change anything? If we cannot change, why do we have the ability to think that we can?

Is funding research a "power not delegated to the United States by the Constitution"?

Is funding research a "power not delegated to the United States by the Constitution"?

The Constitution doesn't say an explicit word about it. So it's optional to Congress if they can justify based on one of their powers.

The 10th Amendment is mostly eviscerated despite recent attempts by the Roberts court to revive it. It states a mere truism.

Aside from certain cases of federal commandeering of state actors and some of the federal spending nonsense I can't think of an instance where something has ever been held unconstitutional because of the 10th A.

The 10th never meant what people today claim it meant in the first place. Certainly most of the people who wrote and ratified the Constitution would not understand the meaning some on the right would want to give it today.

You're talking about state 'sovereignty'? The Court was never sympathetic to those arguments. If we consider sovereign immunity an aspect of sovereignty, then sovereign immunity for states was abrogated as early as 1793 (Chisholm v. Georgia) with John Jay presiding as the Chief Justice. Pretty sure he's a founding father.

What is the 10th ammendment, what was it intended for and what is it interpreted as doing now?

The 10th amendment states the following, Hobbs:

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Basically, it was supposed to restrict the federal government to powers already enumerated to it in the Constitution and nothing more. If it isn't mentioned in the Constitution that the feds can do something, then they cannot do it and it is reserved to the States or to the people. Now look at what all the federal government does today that the Constitution says nothing about, and you'll see why some of us get a little pissy about States Rights (and no, leftists, that is not code word for slavery.) The Supreme Court has been incredibly complicit in the usurpation of powers by the federalies, which is no surprise since it is itself a branch of the federal government.

So how much of our current systems would you roll back to comply with a strict interpretation of the 10th ammendment?

I can't speak for original intent, I have no sympathy for originalism.

These days it prohibits federal commandeering of state actors, for instance the federal govt can't pass a law that requires state police or state bureaucratic to do something like background checks or some such.

There's some weird thing going on with the spending power that I'm not clear on since in the Obamacare case Roberts mucked around with it. It used to be that the federal government could attach strings to federal spending. For instance federal spending on highways was contingent on states raising drinking age to 21. Now there was some deal with how the fed govt can't deny states Medicaid if they fail to implement the healthcare exchanges. I'm not sure what that means or the implications.

US v. Lopez is kind of an aberration being the first modern case to strike down something because it wasn't in the Constitution (gun free school zones act) but that was justified by commerce power so I don't think its controlling.

Right now there's a vague test about, the federal government can do anything that isn't destructive of state sovereignty or violative of any constitutional provision. Whatever that means.

Yeah, I studied with the OU for ~20 years. They're very good indeed. A lot of thought has gone into how to effectively do distance learning.

I would definitely recommend them. Even though the prices have doubled (maybe?) in the last few years, you would certainly still get your money's worth. And, I found, following a course with assignments and an exam, to be the best way of learning a lot about a particular area of interest. More than I would have done just picking up books and studying stuff independently.

How did I manage my time? How do you manage your time now? I don't know what you mean by the question.

Following a timetable and meeting dead-lines, perhaps?

Jeez, tough decision.
Appartment, 40m², ~650€ in total. Nice house, nice surrounding, 10 minutes by bike from university. Would have to organize electricity and internet myself (already included in the calculation).

Alternatively, another appartment, in a student's complex, 5 minutes closer, 20m² bigger (~60m²), 760€ all inclusive, nothing to worry about fo myself. Doesn't really look worse, but located more central.

Distance to supermarkets, public transportation, etc. not a problem for both.

So...100€/month more....1200€ per year more, for not organizing my own stuff and 5 minutes less biking? But I don't really need that space, 40m² is more than sufficient for me.

It depends on what you want to do with the apartment, really. Do you have any projects you want to complete? Do you have a specific room layout in mind that requires a certain amount of room? Does it have enough pantry space for your food needs? Can you fit your bed in the bedroom? Things like this can help make the decision for you.

Furthermore, do you "feel" better in either apartment, or are you neutral in either location? If so, which apartment has the nicer surroundings? For example, would you be more inclined to have a drink outside if you went to Apartment A, but would be more inclined to simply sit in the corner of your kitchen if you went to Apartment B?

Also think about your finances. What are your goals for 2013? What are your goals for 2014? If you spend an extra 1200 euros a year, will this put a dent in any of your plans, or does it not matter?

I'd say that if both places are honestly equal to you, to take the cheaper one and save that 1200 euros for a rainy day, or put it into savings, or do something nice for yourself. An extra five minutes of biking is good for the legs and negligible when looking at the time difference in the bigger picture.

Also, @Hobbs: It's not going well. It really fell apart on me with things that I could not have any say or influence over, and my last ditch effort to stay in college and in Niagara Falls fell on its face when the apartment I was moving into suddenly became undesirable. And by undesirable, I mean that the owners live in the basement and are religiously insane with ridiculous rules that while I could live there without a problem, it would be entirely pointless for my development as an individual and I would be going backwards instead of forwards.

At this point I'm just trying to see if I can get distance education via OSAP, but my academic advisor is being useless and not answering any of my questions no matter how many times I ask and I can't seem to find information from anywhere else so my time is running out.

So I guess I have a question: Does anyone here have experience with distance education in Ontario, Canada? Will I remain eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program? How expensive is a distance program? Are there any programs (through a college as I am barred from going to a university due to educational discrimination) that are similar to that of a General Studies associates from the United States? I'm honestly becoming desperate so I'll take any help I can get. Resources, personal experiences, contact information. Anything.
