I'm starting to wonder if Chukchi's friends are really just ignorant, or if they're actually mischievous goblins sent from the Under-Realm to confuse and confound the hated sun-walkers.

They have said that famines are only a temporary problem so anyone leaving a country because of a famine shouldn't be considered a refugee.

Besides the fact that even the shortest of famines entails people dying, this argument doesn't stand up to any type of intellectual rigor. Every problem is temporary. This is irrelevant to the present. A civil war, a famine, or a genocide 'only' lasting for a handful of years has no bearing on the people living through those disasters today and going through each day with that risk at the forefront of their mind. "They only stand a good chance of dying for another two years" isn't a convincing argument for denying refugee status given that "they stand a good chance of dying" is the reason for being a refugee.

They also don't believe in climate change but they have said that the destruction of the environment is a good thing because "it represents mankind's ultimate conquest over nature", bringing up a quote by I think it was Terry Pratchett about how anyone wanting a return to nature will soon lose that idea if they ever attempt it.

You need better friends. Or at least, you need to encourage them to be a little more introspective. Their theories and convictions all seem very half-baked with little logic or nuance behind them, and @Traitorfish's latter pondering seems to ring true with that in mind. They are almost comically villainous.

I don't know. I think they're more introspective than I am. They have said that everything they say is logical and rational and that anything they disagree with is nonsense and if you disagree with their opinions then you're close minded. They make it sound like if you disagree with anything they say then you're the villain then bring up examples of why you're wrong or why your ideas never work. Even when I mentioned a reference to something they still said that I was wrong again.

Bold for emphasis. It's very cheap to say this but it's something else to prove it. Based on what you share with us they don't seem very keen towards proving it. Insulting you is not proof.

You shouldn't take what we say as gospel either, but with us you at least are given the courtesy of an explanation that goes beyond a bland dismissal and the expectation of belief. We offer you something that you can fact check independently.

It's probably worse than that. If they found out what I really am they would probably want me killed or at least taken somewhere to be treated and cured.

When I try to find out things independently I always someone end up taking the wrong message away.

Chukchi when will you learn that the only friends worth having are your friends in OT!
/lightning cracks /scary music /distant screams of agony

They're religious fanatics. So, yes. :)

So who is really the closed minded one, if they won't even consider letting you question them?

They're fine with questions and they're ready with answers. In their mind, their answers are the only correct ones but people can choose to believe the wrong thing because of ignorance. If other people knew the truth they would agree with them.

See, that's religious (or ideological to the point where it might as well be religious,) indoctrination. They are not open to the truth, they are not open to considering the evidence. People like that do not think about what the evidence for their points are. They are told that they are to follow the lead of some authority figure. That authority figure has told them what the 'truth' is. And they don't question the authority figure, because they have been told not to.

People like that make great concentration camp guards. They make the worst of all possible teachers.

After Chukchi Huskey's two most recent portrayals of his friends it struck me that if someone was to a write a novel about a lonely, self-deprecating person who is plagued by inner demons and their taunting voices, Huskey's friends would be a fitting literary device to convey that conflict.
I'm feeling tempted to drop by in Bath the next time when I'm in England to meet these "friends" o_O.
Just don't mention the name of the forum.

Or option c, in which Chukchi's friends are some bizarro Socratic rhetorical device that exists solely for our own self-educational benefit.

Or to generate this sort of reaction...

If they have enough money to stay in a hotel then maybe no. But otherwise probably?

I don't think income explicitly matters. There are a lot of Chaldeans where I live (christian arabs, a lot from jordan or lebenon) who claim refugee status due to religious persecution and are very wealthy. Afaik claiming refugee status is basically just a way to gain entry into the country, just like you might applying for a visa or whatever.

Are there any game statistical differences between the Civs in CivII? Or are they just Cosmetically Different Sides?

As I recall, the rulers had different personalities, but I don't know if that translated into different statistics.

I guess that might help explain why they've said that the best way to govern a country that only a small un-elected elite should be allowed to vote and that the point where everything started to go wrong was when the Parliamentarians won the Civil War.

Comparing them to concentration camp guards is something they definitely won't like. One thing they are always ready to point out is if you don't believe in the things they do, it always leads to horror and oppression, using examples such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

I did hear one of them say that they spoke to someone about their ideas and that someone called them fascist and they couldn't understand why. Now they use it as a joke saying "the reich way is the right way".

See, whenever someone thinks that a representative democracy is too much is bad, and a more restrictive franchise, or no franchise at all is good, those people may not be fascists, but they are certainly authoritarian. which is a close cousin.

Every country has something of a military budget, even when pressed with other budget priorities. And the US is constantly pressuring them all to increase what they spend.
Most, not every. Liechtenstein has done quite well without any military since 1866, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a military budget either.
